Your list to tackle reminds me of some of the excellent discussions we have had. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I suspect a couple of comments from you will rekindle some of the lively debates we had at times!☺

I'm planning on reading Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang, Big Little Lies and Six Scary Stories soon.

Robert Kratky (bolorkay) | 4 comments I've read "Gone Girl" and enjoyed it immensely. But haven't tackled her other books. Can anyone suggest which book of Ms. Flynn's would be a good return for me? She doesn't seem to be all that "prolific", and I don't mean that in a negative sense.

Why choose?☻

Actually I gave Sharp Objects a higher rating. Here is my review: Almeta's Review of Sharp Objects

Gillian Flynn is such a unique writer that no matter what you choose you'll win.

Bet you can't read just one!

I know I couldn't! I think Dark Places was my first with this group. I loved it and I've now read all the others. I basically will read anything she writes!

We did indeed have some good discussions. Looking forward to the next one :-)

Travis (travistousant) | 137 comments I just read Dark Places amd feel it was much betrer than Gone Girl. I gave GG 4 stars and probably will change it to 3 so I can give 4 to Dark Places

message 8: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 137 comments Dark Places was odd enough and I wasn't conpletely thrilled with the end or else it could have been a 5. Like most of my friends have given it

message 9: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments I loved all of Gillian Flynn's books.

I thought The Girl on the Train paled in comparison, yet everyone seems to have mentioned a similarity between the authors' books.

I don't think I have any Sai King recommended books in the plan for November.

I also loved all of Flynn's books. 5 star reads for me.

I just finished the most recent in Tana French's mystery/thriller series about the Dublin Murder Squad. It is The Trespasser. Another 5 star read. I love this series and King loves the author.

I loved this book as well.

message 13: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 466 comments I recently got a copy of Hearts in Suspension which is from the University of Maine Press made up of essays by people Stephen King knew while at the University of Maine, an essay of his own, a reprint of Hearts in Atlantis and and introduction by one of SK's professors. It looks really good.

message 14: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
I got that, too, Ann. I buy everything related to Stephen King. Not sure when I'll get to it, though.

We did a group read on that one back in 2014. Here is the link to the discussion threads if you're interested.

I agree. Girl on the Train was a big let down to me. Glad someone agrees.

Manda, why not try nominating The Secret History again for the next 2-month group read? Sorry it didn't make it last time.

I'm wondering if you are enjoying, or enjoyed, (assuming you may have finished) The Terror. It wasn't a very successful group read. Too dense and a might difficult to get through. But I'm used to Dan Simmons and his style of writing, and thought it was pretty good. But, I worked hard to finish it and others gave up.

I agree that The Girl on the Train was nothing compared to Gillian Flynn's writing. Her writing grabs you by the cojones! However, I still enjoyed reading Train, just not as much as others.

I don't see any Stephen King recommended books with that title, Coby. Do you know of a SK blurb or tweet about that book?

Plus, I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner. This isn't the thread for recommending group reads. I create one every 2 months for our next group read.

Hi Joyce, sorry for my tardy reply. Did you read that one? Have you read all the previous 26 books? I REALLY want to get to those, but it is so daunting. I HAVE to start at the beginning, of course!

Tom | 52 comments I just started Bad Things Happen. King has a blurb on the back saying something like "great f***ing book, man" so I was intrigued that King would be that excited to curse in a blurb! I will get direct quote soon

Tom, I've already got that one on my list. My review says:

Stephen King says: "Great [expletive] book, man. I loved it."

:-)

Just realized it's set in my home state of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Not a lot of books set in Michigan!

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Speaking of books set in Michigan, I recently read Down on the Farm recommended by SK. Not a book for everyone... gruesome horror, but I kinda liked it. Gave it 4 stars. My review:

Stephen King recommended book. Blurb on book says: "I'd mark it down on my mental "must-buy" list. (Stchur) turns Michigan into Lovecraft country!

5/3/17
It's a shame there haven't been more positive reviews of this. Yes it's very disturbing and gruesome, but isn't a lot of horror that way? It was a decent story, if a bit predictable. As another reviewer stated, the ending was a bit rushed. But it was a page-turner for me, nonetheless. Horror fans would not be disappointed.

I ordered Into the Water from my library. Number 74 in queue, but they have a lot of copies. In no rush, anyway. I have soooo many books to read!

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments I didn't realize that Watership Down was recommended by Sai King, until I saw Debra's review yesterday. I'm currently reading it and finding it a bit slow going. I might be the only person who feels that way, judging from the glowing reviews all my Goodread friends have.

It is very slow, but I am pretty patient with very descriptive books. I loved it. There's an animated movie, too.

Tom | 52 comments Ok Debra, I finally finished Bad Things Happen. I have to say I really enjoyed it. Not sure why there were so many bad reviews; it was well written, smart, characters were done well, plot was outlandish but I kind of thought that was the point. Not sure why King resorted to explicative in his review but I would recommend it as well.

I am often amazed by some of the bad reviews some great books recieve, and visa versa. I'm glad you enjoyed this one... no expletive necessary! lol
