so this thread can be where you gush over books you want to recommend to people, but which do not apply to any of the queries. same rules apply - sell these titles to us - tell us why they are good and to what kind of reader they will appeal, don't just give us your subjective opinion - we are all snowflakes after all.

review your RA tips or seek me out ...

Dave Russell Call It Sleep. None of my friends have read this book, and I want people to read this book, so they can tell me I'm right for loving it so much. Anyway, if you like books about any of the following I recommend this book highly:

Immigrants
Jews
New York
Mothers
Childhood
Yeshivas lead by mean Rabbis

In the first chapter, David Schearl, a six year old Jewish immigrant in 1906 New york, tries to get a glass of water from the sink, but it's too high. Lesson: the world David lives in was not made for him. We see him try to navigate this mysterious world completely through his eyes. (There are some scattered stream-of-consciousness passages, but I always felt these were the weakest parts of the book, but they're mostly brief.) His only refuge is his doting mother who does her best to protect him from his emotionally bullying father. It's a sad, melancholy, grim story, but I never found it depressing. There's some sardonic humor throughout and it has a really nice ending.

Dave Russell Should I have started a new thread for this?

ummm maybe it would be tidier..

up to you.

i should read that book, though - you have mentioned it to me so many times, and i am just a back hole if good intentions...

Eh?Eh! | 51 comments I should read that book, too! I bought it a looooong time ago because you mentioned it.

message 6: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Eh, you bought it because I recommended it?

The pressure.

message 7: by Eh?Eh! (new)

Eh?Eh! | 51 comments Yep, you'd asked karen to put it on her table. It was *cough* over a year ago so the pressure is gone.

technically, it WAS an unsolicited recommendation, but since it was posted simultaneously in 5 other groups, i felt it was not truly with our best interests in mind....

this is a special group, for serious recommendations! if it comes back and truly wants us to read a book, we demand at least a different email from everyone else...

Eh?Eh! | 51 comments Change just one word! Maybe add a "douchebags" to the end...wait, it's gone.

I know this is a very belated reply but I have read Call It Sleep since this posting and wanted to throw in my two cents for what a great book it is, both on a social and personal level.

I read Call It Sleep in 1985 or '86 and found it quite engaging and very moving.

In December I put the finishing touches on the worst book ever written. It is now available in print and as an ebook.

This book will offend everyone.

The woke crowd will find it so politically incorrect, they’ll only stop gagging long enough to upchuck screechy memes about gender bias, misogyny, and homophobia.

Normal folks will find it beyond rude and insulting. They’ll see themselves in the story. It’s not a flattering picture.

Critics will resist even pretending to look at it. The plot is one long flat-line, the characters one-dimensional, the premise facile and implausible, the message superficial and without any redeeming qualities.

I’ve warned my friends and relatives to stay as far away from this piece of literary garbage as possible. If curiosity gets the better of them, I accept no blame and take no responsibility. They were warned.

Why would I write something like this?

That’s easy. In the world of digital publishing, in this age of internet mania, click bait, and mindgame porn, the #1 priority is to separate yourself from the crowd, stand out, get people talking. As an author, there are only two ways to do this. Either write the best book in the world or the worst. I took the easy route.

I’ve achieved what no other author has achieved, or even tried to achieve. This book is so bad, it’s in a class by itself.

It’s a sure #1 at Amazon in …

Literature / Contemporary Fiction / Psychological Dystopia / Euthanasia / Brain Freeze / No Refunds

I’m asking each and every one of you out there to immediately buy this book. I don’t know any of you personally but I want your money. And you don’t know where I live. Don’t come looking for a refund.

Come on! Get on the bandwagon. Sex, Lies & Coffee Beans will give you something to talk about with every one else standing in the checkout lines at Walmart or waiting to get tested for Covid-19.
