I read and do a lot of research. I take notes. I spend a great deal of time getting into the minds, the thought patterns and the preoccupations of my main characters.

As I climbed into bed that night, something moved out of the corner of my eye. Mist drifted under my door and dispersed gently throughout my chamber, its tentacles reaching the ceiling so that gradually I was suffocated.

Don't be afraid of asking for advice. Make a point of befriending the teachers you like and asking for help. Don't let your lack of self-confidence get in the way of making bold decisions. If you want to drop the violin-playing, go to Paris and perfect your French, do it. But speak to your stepfather about it soon, before he dies.

I love blaming things on my sister, but in this case, I can truthfully say that it was all HER fault!
My sister had saved a tape of Time Team doing a spot about Richard III. In the course of talking about this Wicked Uncle and how his nephews had disappeared in the summer of 1483, they talked about his mother Cecylee Neville, Duchess of York. Turns out that her eldest son Edward, who became Edward IV of England may have been illegitimate.
This set my novelist's brain on fire. What kind of a person, I said to myself, would Cecylee have had to be if she managed to get her husband to raise her illegitimate son, all the while keeping him wrapped around her little finger? And that was how THWARTED QUEEN, my first novel, was born.

Initially, it was to get some street cred as an author. In our society of extremely qualified people, it is always good to be able to say that you acquired a degree from a well-respected place such as Lesley University in Cambridge MA. So I saw it as a gateway degree. But what I came to appreciate after acquiring my degree was how much it had made me a much better writer.

My grandfather would be a good topic. I really did not know that Alfred Gamble Stranack (1866-1928) was my grandfather until my sister and I took a DNA test. He was born in Bangalore India, and as a young man fought for the Rajput cavalry. He left India in 1912 under mysterious circumstances.

I stop what I am doing immediately and take a break. Maybe, I'll eat some lunch. Maybe, I'll go for a walk. Or pick up my knitting. Or get started on another project. What I will NOT do is bang my head against an unyielding wall.
Then I will go to bed, and get up the next morning and try again. Miraculously enough, my problems are solved!

Like many women, I did not find my voice until later in life. I was 43 before I started to write, and I remember how surprised I was by how much I had to say. Since then, I have never looked back. I write, because I really cannot stop myself from doing it.
