"Fried Green Tomatoes" by Fannie Flag
(Not only did I have a good laugh, but I skipped away (lightly, I gotta watch my knees) feeling as if I now walked with the wisdom from every person in that small town.)

"The Ditchdiggers Daughters" written by Yvonne S. Thornton with the help of author Jo Coudert.
( I read this some years ago when I was still in school and I remember it equipped me with a knowledge that was invaluable to a little girl of 14)

"A tree grows in Brooklynn" by Betty Smith
(This is one of my all time favorites. I love it so much I don't know how to describe it. But somehow, without ever noticing, between the first page and the last, something inside of me grew in the best possible way.)

I realize that none of these are technically "Maternal". But the way the books taught me, about life, and myself, they all had a way and a touch that is only comparative to that of a mothers.

Simply put the secret life of bee's is not only their lives and the inner workings of the hive , but the secrets of life we can unravel by what we learn from bee's. Throughout the book we watch Lilly come to terms with herself and life because of those around her and what she gleaned from watching the hive. After all “The wilderness holds answers to questions man has not yet learned to ask.”
