Kindred's Curse #3

Heat of the Everflame

Rate this book
The war has begun. Both sides demand Diem’s allegiance—or her death.

After her disastrous coronation, Diem finds herself at the center of the conflict between the Descended and the Guardians. With her newfound friends and the man she’s falling for on one side, and the mortals she has vowed to protect on the other, Diem must walk a careful line to save the people she loves… even from each other.

The mystery of her unusual heritage begins to unravel, sending Diem and Luther on an unexpected journey across the realms. The answers may hold the key to winning the war, but finding them will require her to face painful truths about her mother, her bloodline, and her fate.

Meanwhile, the Crowns have set Diem in their sights. Some could be her greatest allies—while others want her dead. To end their oppressive reign, Diem must sort friend from foe and risk it all to build an army of her own.

But a powerful figure in the north has plans that could change everything...

Heat of the Everflame is the third book in The Kindred's Curse Saga, a four-book epic fantasy romance series that follows our fiesty, bad*ss heroine Diem Bellator in her fight against injustice, her struggle to survive in a royal palace full of betrayal and intrigue, and her journey of self-discovery and finding true love. This slow burn, enemies-to-lovers series is perfect for fans of unique magic systems, dragons and other mythical creatures, angst and romantic tension, and hilarious banter. This book will appeal to fans of plot-heavy, character-driven romantasy such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, From Blood and Ash, Gild, Shadow & Bone, and The Serpent & the Wings of Night.

While my life has taken me through a lot of ups and downs, my love for reading and writing has forever been my true north. I’ve been writing stories since my childhood, filling mountains of notebooks with wild worlds and angsty romances. After a detour as an attorney and small business owner, I am thrilled to finally be pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming an author.

Though I’m a Texas girl born and bred, I currently live in France with my husband, where I can usually be found drinking far too much wine and eating far, far too many pastries.

More than a little disappointed in this book. Being the 3rd book in the series, I expected so much more.

Let’s start with Diem. Her naivety is being stretched to the brink! Nothing is more annoying than a character who ignores every single sign every single time. But, she’s supposed to be this ultimate chosen oh so powerful character and can’t put 2 and 2 together to save her life. Her inability to listen to anything her ‘advisors’ say is also grating on my nerves. I didn’t agree with a single decision she made in this book. Where is her growth? It’s like the more powerful she gets the more reckless she becomes. When the main character is the most annoying character, it becomes a problem. I was 3 chapters in when I realized how disappointing it was that this book was told from Diem’s POV the entire time. I needed a break from her from the start!

Diem and Luther. Sigh. The slow burn is burnt out!! How are these two always together but never getting anywhere? I hate that Luther went from this big bad shadow wielding prince to some little love stick puppy following Diem into the most ridiculous situations. We should not need to dumb down his character to make Diem more appealing. At this point, I almost prefer Henri cause he’d never let her get away with this non-sense. It’s so obvious that Diem and Luther are mates. That was expected in book 1 and we’re going into book 4 and it hasn’t been addressed not even once.

The book overall is far too repetitive. I quit reading and started skimming somewhere around the 18th time Diem went on a ‘mortals deserve better’ rant. As the third book, we know this. We understand this. Now show us (not tell us) how this is being remediated. We know our characters and their personalities. We don’t need a reminder of who they are and what they believe in. Too much of this book is Diem’s internal thoughts!!!!! When I saw how many pages were in this book I was excited. But really, you’re rereading book 1-2 and 3 all in one. It’s too much and I started losing interest fast. I really enjoyed books 1 and 2 because I understood they were setting the stage for the plot development but this book did not meet its mark at all. Hopefully the final book is less repetitive and more plot.

Thank you to the author for an arc in exchange for my honest review.

LOVED book 1 and 2, despite the fact that Diem was naive and didn’t listen.

But this book? Oh, I was so bummed to read this. It was such a letdown of the storyline. First of all…. Diem is SO annoying. We get it. She’s the most compassionate being in the realm. She’s the only one who sees balance. She’s the only one who can save everyone. Then WHY for goodness’ sake, is she SO DUMB?? She’s the best healer around, but she can’t tell that Luther is dying. She is the “daughter of the forgotten”, but she can’t figure out that her father *is* the forgotten 10th sibling. She can’t listen to any good advice, flies headlong into improbable, impossible situations that could be easily avoided… all for “here’s someone you love. Do what I say or I’ll kill them” plot holes that could have been easily side stepped. Instead of earning all of the honor and respect she’s given throughout this book (by even the *gods*…), there’s no growth or maturity that demonstrates why she’s worthy of any of it, except she was *born* powerful.
And Luther. Who I loved with my whole heart in the first books. He devolved into this puddle of “adoring” goo that just did everything Diem wanted whenever she wanted it, and followed her around like a lovesick puppy. He gets sick, follows Diem, follows Diem, spanks her (wth?), and follows Diem. End of character arc.
There were almost no twists in this book that weren’t obvious chapters in advance. The leaps of logic necessary to justify some of the scrapes Diem and Luther got into (and out of) were flimsy at best in most cases. I found myself regularly going … “yes, yes, now she has another power, now she has another crown, mortals deserve more, no one sees it but her, got it” and skimming till some action would happen, just because I was hoping for redemption.
At this rate, it would take *really* not having anything else to read for me to pick up book 4.

That cliffhanger broke me... If this review turns out to be messy, excuse me as I was sobbing while drafting it.

"Desire? Desire is a pathetic word for what I feel for you. I require you. I am sustained by you. You are the flame that fuels my fire."

Everything about this book hit the mark. Read if you like-
✔️ ACOMAF
✔️ Serpent and the Wings of Night
✔️ HOSAB
✔️ Slow burn
✔️ Angst
✔️ Found family
✔️ Dragons + magic system
✔️ "Touch her/him and die"
✔️ Political intrigue
✔️ Battle scenes

Things pick up right after the ending of book 2 and it has a powerful start. The world building is getting stronger and stronger. With the characters' journey into different Crowns, I thought it might make things complex, it did not. In fact it's quite easy to grasp and the author does a fantastic job at making things clear. I would however like to know more about the Kindred, perhaps in the next book.

The pacing is consistent and fairly fast paced, although the second half is far more hands-on action. The first half mostly deals with Diem's capture and her rescue, her and Luther connecting and trying to figure out where they stand in the upcoming war. The second half is more to do with finding allies, sacrificing positions, battle scenes, getting answers, betrayals and establishing their true love. So yeah lots happen in this book.

The characters-
👸Diem- Am ngl there was a point in this book when I got kinda annoyed with her because of the stupid decisions she was making and not acting like a queen. BUT it worked out as for her it is also a journey of self growth and self worth. I loved how her character developed from a self doubting woman to a fierce, lethal and someone who finally accepted she is the rightful queen. I just know for a fact that her comeback is going to leave everyone shook! I like how righteous she is and willing to give people another chance even though they do not deserve it. Hopefully she won't do that for Doriel or Remis. I also loved how she finally accepted she is in love with Luther and wants more. Had she not realized that I would have fought for Luther myself lol. One thing I really appreciated about her that she made her mother grovel.

❤️‍🔥Luther- Y'all don't understand how much I LOVE THE MAN. There's nothing wrong he can do. He is so fierce, loyal, protective, and always ready to reason, to go to war, to die for his love. He is never to run away. There was a particular storyline in the first half when I thought the worst and it had my heart in pieces. But thankfully nothing of such happened. Am glad to see his queen finally realized his worth and is ready to fight for him too- cause that's exactly what he deserves. But at the same time I would like to see him lead a bit. I know he is not a leader, but he trained to be one. I would love to see that side of him again and am expecting that to happen in the next book. His love for Diem is nothing less of a devotion and that in a sense sums his character aptly.

😒Diem's mother whose name I have already forgotten- The reason why I give her a special mention is cause I hate that woman and I need to get things off my chest. She has no love in her. She should have groveled harder. After being rescued she had the audacity to boss Luther and Diem around and lecture them? What for woman?! Stop being a hypocrite. Check your own self first, check your own past! Smh.

🐉The supporting characters- I like Taran, Alixe, and Teller a lot. Taran and Alixe surely were missed in the second half but am looking forward to what they have to offer in the next book. Teller reacted exactly like a brother will, so I don't hold it against him. I like Soren a lot, I wouldn't want to lose her at all.

The romance- was in the midst of a battle and political intrigue but so well done. I do however believe that the slow burn shouldn't have taken that long, especially spice. Both of them love each other but finding a perfect moment to spice it up was torture. I love how much Diem and Luther love each other. They protect. They are always ready to sacrifice themselves for each other. To kill for each other and they have killed for each other. These two deserve such immense happiness, I hope they get it.

The ending left me sobbing and my heart is broken. I want revenge on the backstabbers and sneaky bastards. I need to see Diem achieve her goals. I need to see Luther achieve his dream and peace. I NEED MOREEEEEE 😭😭😭

That saying, I do stand by my words that the first book is the weakest in the series. But am glad the second book and now the third are such amazing reads. Also, I do believe that this book could have been 200-250 pages shorter had some of the bits from the first half removed but am willing to overlook it as it's very character driven, relationship driven book and war centric book.

I can't wait for the next book 😭

So much was happening in this book but I was so…bored. I don’t know, maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for it but I was underwhelmed.
Also, Diem’s “kindness” is annoying. I mean, how many times must a person try to kill you, your loved ones and innocent children for you to finally agree that hey maybe this person will be better off gone, for the greater good. I mean, I was baffled. At some point, compassion is just lack of common sense. Is it just me? 🤷🏻‍♀️

The first two books in this series were a 5 star read. Book three unfortunately took a huge turn and was nearly unreadable.

Main character is completely insufferable.
Luther lost all of his best character traits overnight.
The plot was so drawn out, the exact same thing happens about five times in a row with escalating drama. Oh so much drama.

If book four is another repeat of ‘we all need to be honest from this point on’ and immediately a raft of new secrets, I’ll be so upset.

There was such an opportunity for this to be the smart, strong and intelligent continuation of the series. But we’ve chosen the super special, all powerful MFC throws a tantrum at every turn route instead. But let’s make sure that she SuFfErS fOr HeR PeOpLe first. Because she isn’t selfish. *At all*

This was truly painful to read, maybe a 2.5 at most. I powered through because I liked books 1 and 2 and I wanted to see where this was going. This was 20% actual plot / story development and 80% filler of Diem's stupid decisions, Luther and Diem not communicating, and unbearable Luther and Diem scenes.
Diem - absolutely painful and definitely the worst main character I've read all year. She was tolerable (sort of) in the first 2 books but even after 3 books she has shown absolutely no growth. She has no diplomacy, no negotiation skills and her magic is still unrefined. Her thinking is still incredibly black/white which means every decision she makes in the book is astoundingly poor. Making enemies of the Crowns, murdering other Crowns, abandoning her chance to get answers from Umbros and then having to gall to tell Umbros it would be her fault if Luther died, when LUTHER was the one who didn't communicate, rescuing her mother with no plans, risking Sorae because she wanted to reunite Teller and their mother because she FELT BAD FOR HIM, taking on her father unprepared and with no support, her continued ignored about the Kindred despite now living in their world, letting Vance and the other mortals go because they were mortals, and the bonded bargain at the end. There was so much stupidity and yet nearly everything works out for her because she's written to be so powerful. She has 3 crowns, she can wield magic from every realm, she can vanish godstone, her blood can heal godstone injuries. I get that she's a "wing it" kind of girl but the decisions she makes and the scenarios she ends up in are way too ludicrous.
Diem and Luther were unbearable. It was weird enough in the first 2 books that Luther's attraction to her seemed to be influenced by Lumnos. His unwavering support behind all her worst decisions in this book was toxic. The protectiveness and possessiveness was absolutely intolerable (doesn't communicate, couldn't let her out of sight, displaying jealousy over a mortal teenage boy who was nice to Diem). And then the one scene where Luther does leave her in a battle to save children from being murdered, SHE GETS MAD AT HIM.
The book could have been 50% shorter if the characters just communicated. I was so sick of the "I'm keeping this a secret to protect you" or X character knows key info but they get interrupted before they can share (Umbros, Teller noticed what her crown looked like).
The big question from the first 2 books was obviously Diem's ancestry, but that received about 5% of the book's attention. What I would've loved for this book to be was a proper revelation about her father beyond a few lines from her mother, Diem actually doing the work to find out about the Forgotten Lands and the youngest Kindred, honing her magic, coming up with proper plans to unify and rule. Not poor decision after poor decision of just random shit.
The only good things in this book were Taran and Zalaric, Sorae, Alixe (sensible sensible Alixe).

Sigh... 2.5 stars?

I'm so conflicted. And disappointed. This series started off soooooo strongly. It had all the potential. But this book really, really fell off. And it fell hard.

I agree with all of the other 2 to 3 star reviews.

Here are my issues:
Way too long, and the pacing is bad. The first half is pretty steadily action-packed, and then the second half gets soooooo slow. I felt like I was trudging through mud to get to the end.

Diem continues to make stupid decisions. I didn't expect this to go away completely in this book, but I did expect her to have a bit more forethought in regards to the consequences of her actions. Or try to at least. She doesn't.

Everything to do with Diem rescuing a certain family member and everything that happened as a consequence of that and after that event. Just so dumb. Honestly. I did not understand the Diem's thought process here. I thought the whole Montios part shouldn't have even been part of this book as it was completely glossed over. The ending dragged so much, but at the same time, every major plot point was approached quickly and glossed over even quicker in a "yeah, we'll come back to this later" type of way.

The same old same old with Diem defending mortals. Yeah, we get it. No need to rehash this convo for the millionth time. Let's see some action in this regard instead. Hmm, like that war that everyone keeps talking about? On that note, sometimes Diem defends people or saves people that she really shouldn't. Like. I almost wish she was actually more brutal than she is. So many issues wouldn't have arisen if she had just killed a certain someone at the start (and he would've deserved it.)

However, my biggest gripe by far is the romance. The first 2 books, especially the 2nd, had such a wonderful slow burn romance. However, in this book, the tension completely disappeared. It's like the slow burn just fizzled out. Even when we finally see them together, it wasn't even very satisfying... just lacked that tension or chemistry. I think this is due to the fact that Luther has completely abandoned any personality and turned into a wet flopping noodle in this book. Just following Diem around and helping her with or cleaning up the mess from her dumb ass decisions. Ugh, it was insufferable.

The other thing that was great about the first 2 books was seeing Diem come into her power and reading the struggle she had with controlling her magic. It was so relatable and realistic to see her fail and get back up again and then accomplish things. This book?????? Where did that go???? All of a sudden she's accumulating more and more magic and instantly can wield it perfectly every time. It felt like such a flip from the prior book.

I could honestly keep going with reasons I was really disappointed in this book, but I'll stop now. All I'll say to end this review is that it took me months to read this. Kept putting it down to read other books. Got bored very easily. And the characters didn't keep me intrigued even when the plot couldn't.

Not sure if I'll continue the series.

I need time to process everything I just read and omg the cliffhanger.

The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star for me was that it was way longer than it needed to be.

Fuck it - I’m just gonna go right on ahead and give it the 5 stars it deserves. It’s only been a day since I’ve finished reading it but I can’t stop thinking about it!

I miss this world and all of the characters 😩😩🫶🏻

I LOVED the story and was completely captivated for the most part, hit a few slow areas so 1026 pages was just a little excessive and repetitive at times. But I love it.

I stopped reading at 45%. This book could be so good but every other paragraph is “I’ll tell you tomorrow” “we should talk” or people just avoiding actual conversations to build up suspense or to not expose some pivotal plot concept. I’m over it. Honestly I probably wasn’t going to read more after this one because most series >3 books just get bad at that point and there’s no way any of this is going to get resolved in this book.

Also I’m tired of the FMC seeing literally anyone being held captive and then crying about it and immediately giving up.

never have I ever had to put a book down so many times because I couldn’t STAND the main character. absolutely no reason for the book to be so long. It felt like I was rereading the same chapter/plot in a different setting over and over. and it was essentially stupid decision after stupid decision and missed obvious clue after missed obvious clue. Somehow every other page is diem talking about her guilt and how she knows she messed up but then never changing anything about her behavior?? genuinely so annoyed. and the slow burn has been burnt to a CRISP. just read a synopsis if you want to know what happens tbh.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I've been kind of struggling lately, and I feel like words just entirely evaded me when trying to write anything for this review; the fact that the book itself made me feel slightly tired while reading it did not help either. So, due to some personal issues, the full review for this might come at a much later time than usual, as I will be focusing on some other things at the moment.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I did however still wanted to provide the rating of the book and slightly mention some of the things I did enjoy and did not like about the story, as these will probably serve as notes for when I will be writing this review at a later time. And I also didn't want to leave this completely without any opinion of mine here (especially since I seem to have so many).

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I did enjoy:
- the amazing world building this entire series managed to bring and especially in this book; I was so happy to be able to clearly imagine everything described in this book and I am so in love with this imaginary world.
- the action of the book itself, which for the biggest part of it really managed to keep you intrigued and interested in its development.
- the banter and the tension, which were absolutely insanely delicious; maybe I didn't really enjoy all the dominant talk, but I still devoured everything from Diem and Luther's interactions
- the focus being placed on the side characters as well and the attention they received in the story (i am a huge lover of any form of found-family);

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I did not enjoy:
- the length of the book; i love long books, especially when I love what is happening in them. But this book did not feel long in terms of pages, but in terms of action and plot itself. It got really tiring at one point, slightly repetitive and I can't deny, it made me feel like I just couldn't wait to be done with it in the last 200 pages. This is probably what caused a review slump for me when it comes to it.
- the development of the characters; while I quite enjoyed Diem as a character, I didn't really enjoy the trajectory of Luther at times. I do love him as a character; I would do ANYTHING for this man, but after all the i will fight you and call you out talk, I didn't really see any of that happening. I really hope the last book will bring more regarding to his character.
- the way we instantly went from someone who had no idea about magic to a fully-experienced, entirely overpowered character with Diem; maybe it is just me, but her quick evolution ended up feeling rather rushed and sudden. I really did wish we would have seen a slower and more relatable progress instead

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I hated:
- Diem's mother. 😅

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I am really hoping I will get the willingness and the time to write this entire review in more details as soon as possible, but everything depends on my mood, and honestly, me and my mood are not always the greatest of friends.

This is the end of the road for me. The good is that I think this book introduced more characters, more politics, a couple reveals, and more enemies. The bad part is the main characters are still stuck in a rut. Diem is not only naive but overly argumentative. I stopped at one point when Luther was trying to warn her and she interrupted him six times. Being difficult doesn't make a character strong. It's all about Diem yet she's clueless. How did she not realize that Luther had been stabbed and was dying? Was her mind taken at some point?

And Luther - he is supposed to be strong and powerful in his own right yet Diem has him on a leash. He's following her and putting up with her crap. It's repetitive - we get it - he always knew she would be the most powerful and he's so in awe of her. Enough already. The slow burn was so slow that the flame burned out. Frankly, there wasn't much chemistry from the start.

As for the larger plot, it dragged on so long that the reveals were overshadowed by these weak main characters.

When I tell you this book HURT ME. I mean I was ugly crying at just 16%. Like full on “girl are you good?” sobbing. The tears didn’t stop flowing in between fits of laughter, gasps of surprise and yelling in anger. This is without a doubt a “throw your kindle at the wall multiple times” book. It’s incredibly frustrating (in a good way? is that possible?)

The amount of secrets revealed in this book will have you pacing the room chanting “no way! omg no way!!!!!!” It was one revelation after another. (of course not all secrets) Prepare your heart because I don’t think anyone could’ve been ready for the things we learn.

Diem really steps into who she really is in this book too. She relies heavily on her companions in book 1 & 2, but this book she drills down who she is and who she wants to be despite the opinions of those around her. It made me feel like a stronger person just reading it. It was incredibly inspiring and I think we can all see glimpses of ourselves throughout Diem’s journey.

There is absolute no relief for an anxious heart here. It is nonstop stress and turmoil. One chaotic event after another these characters DO NOT get a break. A lot of characters you love will stress you out, piss you off, and make you question what the hell they were thinking with some of the actions they take. This had me seriously considering whose side I was even on.

One sentence: the library scene

Diem and Luther’s relationship is definitely put through the wringer in the first half of this book and then absolutely explodes in the best way towards the second half. We get glimpses into Luther’s head (finally) and although I would absolutely die for a Luther POV, I’m definitely not disappointed. It was really relieving to see their love for each other blossom and I can’t wait to see how the two of them grow stronger in Burn.

When i tell you my heart dropped at the ending and a bawled my eyes out. I had to step back with only a few mins left in the book so I could cry. My partner literally had to hold me and rub my back to console me (yes he laughed.) I didn’t even cry this hard during KOA…

I can’t even begin to describe the betrayal Diem faces and I honestly don’t know how someone would come back from this with anything but hate in their heart. If you think you’ll feel any form of relief after reading this book, you would be wrong. This cliffhanger is brutal and I truly don’t know how my heart will be able to hold out for the last book.

This book is darker, spicier, and more violent than the first two books. If you have daddy issues, this book will make them worse. If you need me, I’ll be crying in the corner until Burn of the Everflame is in my hands and Penn rights all of her wrongs. She knows what she did.

Side note: someone does get stabbed in the dick and it’s very satisfying.

Things I didn’t like about this book:
*Way TOO long, could have cut that book down like 400 pages and it would have had the same impact.
*The fact this book was not dual POV and I had to spend 1026 pages in Diem’s head was making me wish for death.
*Diem has to be one of my least favorite book characters ever. I’m so sorry but she was pretty unbearable at times.

Things I liked about this book:
*Taran
*When I finished it.

DNF in Part 3 ——— This book is 1000 pages long??? For why??? Diem is so annoying and naive. YOU CANT SAVE EVERYONE and pretend you’re morally better than everyone while also trying to wage a war.

ALSO Luther and Diem don’t belong together. I could not stand the whole

“No YOU ARE SO POWERFUL”
“NO YOU ARE MORE POWERFUL”
“No DONT SACRIFICE YOURSELF FOR ME”
“NO YOU DONT SACRIFICE YOURSELF FOR ME”

JUST STOP!!!!!!!!

I never write reviews like this and I’m writing this because I had hope in this and was forcing myself to get through it and it wasted my time

"For all those caught in the flames, remember that the hottest fires forge the strongest swords."

Penn Cole has done it again with the 3rd book of this series. First off, let me say this book was a 1,000 page rollercoaster ride through all of my emotions. Did I giggle and laugh....ABSOLUTELY. Did my heart warm and feel passion....FULLY Did I tear up or cry....UTTERLY. Lastly, did I get mad and want to scream....ENTIRELY, and I went through this up and down rollercoaster more than once. I will not be okay until I get the next book in my hands.

This book picks right back up where the last one ended. In this book we get to explore and visit other realms and we get to meet new characters. The way the authors worldbuilding and characters continue to develop over this series is nothing short of BEAUTIFUL Penn Cole has weaved an elaborate and intricate story that has you at the end of your seat with angst needing more. This series is so beautifully written that you can see it playing out right in front of you. You get completely lost in the world and the characters and almost feel like you are in the story yourself. If I was to give this book any type of critique it would be the fact I lost a lot of the characters in the last half of the story but that might only affect me because I LOVE TARAN!❤

DIEM & LUTHER
First off, we all know that LUTHER is the perfect book boyfriend. The passion and tension the author is able to develop between these two with the slow-burn romance is CHEF'S KISS😘😘
“It is not just my body that craves you, Diem. It is my heart.” He clutched at his chest. “My scarred, ruined scrap of a soul. Your smiles, your affection, the way you look at me, the way you see me... that is my lifeblood. I would sooner wither without food or water, sink into the sea until my lungs burst, abandon my magic and let my godhood burn me alive from within than endure one more day of life without you in it.”

The touch her/him and you die trope in this book is INTENSE🔥🔥
“Touch her,” he snarled, throaty and vicious, “and I’ll peel every last vein from under your flesh and strangle you with them.”

“You hurt a hair on her head,” Luther growled, “and I will hunt you down and remove yours from your neck.”

“Let all those who might try to tear us apart see this and know how far my devotion will go. I will suffer for you, bleed for you, but most of all, I will survive for you. My body can be carved in two, open and dying, and still I will crawl from the ruins of my flesh and fight my way back to your side. Death itself could not keep me away."

Ended up skimming after halfway through. I loved the first two books but this was awfully repetitive. Diem didn’t have any growth other than gaining new powers and Luther somehow became dumb.

The slow burn was absolutely awful after Luther hid the fact that he was stabbed. There was no real reason his character couldn’t address that he was hurt. He just…didn’t? And for what?

Rating: 5✨ (by this I mean infinity stars, all of the stars in the galaxy, universe, ALL OF THEM).
Spice: 2 mouthwatering🌶

Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. Like always, this review is voluntary & honest.

GOODNESS, WHERE DO I BEGIN? This book was one of the most emotional rollercoaster rides I have been in & I LOVED EVERY SECOND. This book broke me into pieces, shattered my heart & also made my heart & I whole again. (Kind of because I haven't fully recovered after that ending.) We've got happiness, angst, laugher, tears & HEARTBREAK.

Penn's writing perfectly captured every single emotion each scene was supposed to convey & also evoke from the readers. I've said her writing was incredibly beautiful before, but I will say it again! Heat of the Everflame was everything it needed to be & more.

Diem, our girly needs A BREAK. But her growth? It has been beautifully developed so far. The Diem from Spark is a wholly different Diem in Heat & I mean that in the best way. Diem is a character who struggled with a lot of self-doubt, but most of all denial. Her difficulty accepting the changes in her life, but also in herself, were the biggest conflicts she had to get past. And regardless of how simple it may seem, the situation & odds continuously changed. The truths & the realities she had to accept. Those things were enough to bring down many and at times it seemed like it would bring her down as well. But instead, she became the Diem she was meant to be. Fierce & yet kind, forgiving & yet ferocious when needed. The mercy & the better world she believes in, her heart that is filled with so much love to give, it all makes her one of my overall favorite FMCs. Her character arc has been executed beautifully thus far & I've loved every second. She holds my heart.

LUTHER, the love of my life. I was a goner for him in book one, continued to fall harder in book two. But this book took that love & adoration I had for him to a whole other level. The Luther we see in this book is one we have longed to see. He is still our Prince that evokes fear from all enemies. Whose power can make even the most powerful think twice. Whose heart is filled with so much love & good. His selflessness & his need to ensure those he loves come first is something I admire & yet it's also something that makes my heart sob. Because he is worthy of love, of happiness. The Luther behind the mask of the aloof, cruel Prince is one that will have you offering your heart on a silver platter. The growth & development of his character was also one that had me screaming "CHEF'S KISS."

The story of Diem & Luther is one of finding one's home in the other, learning the real meaning of love & fighting against all odds for that love to conquer all. And the slow burn built to a delicious, blazing flame.

The found family trope in this series is still top tier, unmatched, BEAUTIFUL. Taran is still my baby, Alixe is such a Queen. Teller, Eleanor, Lily, Perthe, all of them still hold a piece of my heart. SORAE ALSO IS MY BABY WHO DESERVES ALL THE HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD. I WILL PROTECT HER AT ALL COSTS. New characters that are introduced will have you wanting to give them all the love & hugs, others will have you wanting to throw hands. Zalaric I LOVE YOU.

The stakes are higher than ever. The need for allies is evident. The time for war has arrived. The twists & turns will have you at the edge of your seat. Heat of the Everflame & The Kindred's Curse series as a whole is a MUST READ. One of my top favorites of all time. You will NOT regret diving into this incredible world Penn has masterfully created! 🧡

PS: praise girlies, this one is for us.

I was sent the ARC for this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have to start this by saying I am shocked that I am giving this 3 stars. I was absolutely captivated by the first two books in the series and had such high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, I felt like the book was trying to do too much. There were overarching plot lines and so many small plot lines. Some plots got resolved, some became more confusing and some just seemed to no longer matter.

I really struggled to get over Diem’s inability to listen to anyone and continuing to make decisions that didn’t make sense. I hoped this book would showcase her growth into her powers (it did) and her growth in becoming a strong leader (it did not). She continues to struggle with the concept of a war despite the war already happening. It’s been 3 books about the injustice done to mortals and yet nothing has come of it.

Another bone to pick is Luther!! I had fallen for Luther head over heels in the first book but now his character has completely changed. I loved the slow burn they experienced but all of a sudden it was an overwhelming amount of romance that didn’t really go anywhere till the end. His character went from challenging Diem to a man who idolized her but also didn’t allow her to make her own decisions? They talk about trust yet there was none?

Overall, it fell flat for me considering how incredible the first two books were. I had really high expectations for this book that it sadly did not meet. Ultimately, I did enjoy the book and I’m excited for the rest of the series.

With a heavy and sad heart, this didn't meet my expectations. 😭😭

Well my biggest grievances is that this book was LONG. It felt like there was parts of the story that could have been taken out or shorten. Also the pacing was all over the place. It would be some incredible action and then in will come to a halt with the drama between Luther and Diem was drawn out.

Luther is acting like a broody misunderstood child all of a sudden. What dark secret are you holding that makes you so misunderstood and pull away from someone? Well we find out and because of it causes Diem to act out irrationally and cause more problems.
*scoffs* slightly annoying when the MMC does that. Also his personality just flipped flopped quite a lot. One second he was broody and overbearing then the second half he was a golden retriever, ending every sentence in *MY QUEEN* and doing whatever Diem wanted.

The slow burn romance really fizzled out for me in this. It was really dragged out again in the third book that I just wanted to give up on the couple on ever getting together officially.

Also Diem as a character became a little unbearable. It took her two books to learn how to use one power. She suddenly started amassing quite a bit a power quickly and suddenly an expert on how to use it all of it? Then on top of that, she is quite cocky and using her power to threaten everyone. But at the same time have this deep morals that she can't hurt innocents? Okay.

All in all, this book burned me out a little bit and caused me to be slightly disappointed in the series. I most likely won't be rushing to the 4th book.

5th March 2024: right. I had to give myself a few days for this on because it was almost too much to process.

Diem was much better in this book and had stronger faith but she kept making stupid decisions about who deserved mercy. Honestly, Luther’s dad, uncle and Aemon should have been DISPATCHED long ago. Overall she was sharper, stronger and way more confident in her feelings for Luther and their relationship which was nice. It meant there weren’t anymore weird delusions about marrying Henri(ICK).

Luther…I don’t know what happened but my God was he an idiot in this book lol. He made a really stupid decision to hide something that he clearly couldn’t hide and was OBVIOUS. Anyway I still love him and apart from that bit of deceit he was a great character. One of the things Penn got right with Luther? His SWOONWORTHINESS hahaha. He really does make you swoon 🤤🫠 and I’m so happy we only get Diem’s POV and see it only through her eyes.

Diem’s mum? Oh she has to GO. What an awful, selfish, hypocritical woman. I have no idea why she’s even a character. Her story added no depth to the book and she was an ANNOYANCE. like everything about her was irritating and I almost wish she was never introduced. I have no desire to see any character development with her. She’s a loser who put her whole family in danger and she’s not even good at what she does. She can GO. I know I really wanted to know about her because it seemed like we were missing an important part of the plot…but now she’s been revealed I’m asking myself what was the point.

Now the story as a whole was written really well! The Side characters were amazing. Taran and Sorae really brought it home. Also ZALARIC 😍😍🫠🫠🫠 what a great addition. We really got to see some good writing and the emotion it evoked is why I rated it 4⭐️ and not 3.

That cliffhanger and betrayal GUTTED ME. because HOW CAN IT END LIKE THAT PLEASE??

My problem with the book was that it seemed too much at times. I kid you not, there was a battle and near death experience on every other page….it was a bit overwhelming and felt like the author was trying to pad the story. I also felt like some of the secrets and riddles were unnecessary. The Queen of Umbros was ridiculous. Stop talking in riddles and say what needs to be said? I really hate when the “mystery” doesn’t make sense and you can tell it’s thrown in the make the story longer and drawn out. Because why keep delaying something you desperately want to say and then promise you will say it tomorrow?

Anyway, this series is at risk of being long winded and losing its spark. The writing is great so it will never be a DNF or 2⭐️. But it’s easy to lose passion when we are on the third book with no real answers…hopefully book four ties it up nicely.

03/03/2024: Crying and throwing up. Review to come once I know what to do with myself after reading that ending. All I can say is - Penn Cole, you WILL be hearing from my lawyers and paying for my therapy.

UPDATED REVIEW:

I just freaking love this series! Truly one of the best hidden (and hopefully not so hidden anymore) gems and one of those stories that really makes me appreciate how as readers we're really able to enjoy so many more stories from indie authors because of self-publishing. This book is BIG. It is a non-stop, go go go unrelenting JOURNEY and I loved every single bit of it. If book 1 was setting the scene and giving us glimpses into Diem's life, and book 2 was about the politics of the descended vs humans and Diem's journey to accept herself and her powers, then book 3 was really about adventure, the looming war that is already here, and a further exploration of who Diem is. And yes, we finally find out who daddy Diem is ( and he is not as fun as daddy Luther, to be expected) It was so fun to travel through the different realms and get little bits and pieces to the larger puzzle but Penn Cole never sacrifices the emotional development. I LOVED seeing Luther and Diem's relationship become deeper and seeing them explore the nuances of conflicts that (fantasy) couples face - how do I get a Luther??? because that man just makes diem feel SEEN AND HEARD AND ACCEPTED. There's give and take on both their ends on themes like trust, acceptance, true love, etc., and it all fits in seamlessly against this larger backdrop of danger at every corner, a war on several fronts, a new enemy emerging from the grave, and lots and lots of close encounters with death.

This is everything you could want from a book 3, with exquisite worldbuilding, a steamy and tender romance, devastating truths, incredible characters, the best found family (i would die for Taran and Zalaric), and WAR. Consider me a Penn Cole stan for now and forever.

RTC, but basically will read anything Penn Cole writes ever. Wish I could blitz the pages into a fine little flour and turn them into pancakes that I could eat every morning for the rest of my life.

Also, how do I...marry Luther?

The first two books in this series I couldn’t put down. They were a shooting arrow towards an interesting world, a grand conflict that could be a fascinating study on humanity, a character with so much potential, and a slow burn romance that has the promise of such a satisfying payoff. And this book is like stumbling up the stairs repeatedly, banging knees, elbows, face the whole time. Seriously felt like a different author wrote this one. It was tedious and repetitive and lost all the momentum of the first two completely. Really it needed a better editor to point out that it’s just the same scenario happening over and over and over again and needed to find different avenues to accomplish the plot points. Diem gets captured, Luther tries to save her but gets captured, she tries to go off on her own to save him, then refuses to leave anyone behind, and makes threats and enemies everywhere. Repeat like seven times, literally. People acting out of character led to some captures (the highest ranking military officers sent to rescue Diem start wrestling and bantering a stone’s throw away from the rebel camp with no one even thinking about being on watch?) but Diem’s recklessness causes pretty much all of them. She had no growth, still has no concrete plans to achieve her goals, not even the start of an idea, has no desire to attempt diplomacy and won’t listen to advisors, and she makes so many reckless and selfish decisions at the expense of her goals. She thinks no further than “I want to do this so I will”, despite people telling her it will have detrimental consequences. Then she’s shocked and disappointed by the consequences. By this far in she needed to have progressed at least a little. She still rants about how it’s all unfair to the mortals but the descendeds are good too and she wants to protect everyone, meanwhile also threatening everyone she encounters and then feels horrified that she’s forced to actually follow through on these threats sometimes. This “can’t we just all get along?” line is getting old when she has the power to enact change and has done absolutely nothing with it over 3 books and doesn’t even seem to be trying. At one point she rushes to save buildings instead of people during a major battle, which is in direct contrast to all this ‘selflessly always saves people regardless of who they are’ concept that the entire book keeps banging you over the head with. A lot of tell, not show happening. Luther’s character is horribly blunted, especially in the second half, and their slow burn came to grinding halt for no reason. Even when it haltingly tries to pick back up it just doesn’t work well. There was some out of the blue combatting-the-patriarchy thrown in that seemed really out of place as it did not match anything in rest of the story. Also at the end a big bad guy is suddenly introduced, so I guess we’re just throwing away the original premise of uniting two populaces to find common ground that the first two books were building up? This was really disappointing after the first two books had a very different tone and much more cohesive story. Hoping for more in the concluding fourth book but definitely less excited than I was before reading this one. Honestly not even sure I’ll read it after this one was so disappointing.

Oh boy… I hate to say I’m disappointed. But let me start with what I loved!

The side characters! TELLER & LILLY! I want a book about them. We didn’t get enough. Their storyline is a lot more interesting to me tbh & I love both their characters sooo much. And TARAN!! I just love him.

When Diem goes into Luther’s mind to get his POV!!! That was so sweet & I absolutely loved.

The pacing of this book was done quite well considering how incredibly long it was. Also I can’t get over how incredibly slow the slow burn was?! Kinda digged it.

Onto the things I didn’t love….
Diem. She’s infuriating. As a reader, I don’t love being 3 steps ahead of her all the time. I also don’t feel like she’s grown as a character? Her power has sure grown, but she falls a bit flat. I want to know who she is under her magic. Show me you’re worthy of a crown outside of it, ya know?

Luther. Some of the things he says gets me blushing, but I wanna know what he loves about Diem other than the fact that her power when she fights turns him on & she cares about the people she loves. I loved him in the first two books, but he turned into Diem’s shadow this book.

My biggest gripe with this series is that I can see every plot twist coming a mile a way. Everyone says the cliffhanger at the end of this book is really something, so I was shocked when that’s what it was??

Knowing we get Luther’s POV in the next book makes me a little more excited for book 4, but I’m still a bit apprehensive.
