In Death #35

Delusion in Death

Rate this book
After years on the force, Eve Dallas didn't think she could be shocked anymore... until now.

It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business professionals unwound with a few drinks, complained about the boss, maybe hooked up with someone for the night. Until something went terribly wrong. At first it was just a friction in the air. The noise intensified. The crowd seemed oppressive. some sharp words were exchanged, some pushing and shoving.

Then the madness descended. And after twelve minutes of chaos and violence, eighty people lay dead.

Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things—monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics makes its report, the mass delusions make more sense: it appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive people to temporary insanity—if not kill them outright.

But that doesn't explain who would unleash such horror—or why. Eve's husband, Roarke, happens to own the bar, yet he's convinced the attack wasn't directed at him. It's bigger than that. And if Eve can't figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere. Because it's airborne....

An awful lot of people die in this one in a particularly gory fashion, but as usual Eve and her team are in top form to catch the bad guys and lock them up for good.

I just give these books all five stars at random now because I enjoy them so much. The characters are like friends, the stories just breeze along and the humorous interludes are genuinely funny. This is my second read through of the whole series and I am still as entertained as I was the first time round.

I suppose one day Robb will stop writing them but I hope that day is a long, long time away!

“She woke to the scent of coffee, and wondered if that was how mornings in heaven smelled.”

*sigh* Roarke, he is just so perfect. He always thinks her darling Eve first... :) I want a husband just like him!!!! :D Oh dammit, I'm already married but I can still dream, right? :P

Anyway #book35 and it was just so good. :) Normally I'm not a big fan of Mystery / Crime books but this series made me to change my mind about that. ;)

Long story short, Eve & Roarke are the best couple that I've ever read... <3

“You go in, I go in."
"Listen---"
He took her face in his hands.
"You go, I go. That's non-negotiable. If we're to get blasted to hell or poisoned into lunatics, we do it together."
"Crap, Crap. You have to look less rich and gorgeous."
God help him, she made him grin.
"I'll do what I can.”

And many, many monkey sex between them ;) (yes, a girl can dream)

3.75 Stars. This was the third J.D. Robb audiobook that I got dirt cheap from a local library sale. I have been listening to these in the car only since they are on CD’s. I don’t have a long daily commute to work so it’s been taking me months to finish these. Long time aside, I’m happy to say that this is the best of the series I have listened to so far. The big crime that starts the mystery is crazy. We are not talking about a normal murder mystery. And because the crime is so big, it sets the book off on a pretty explosive pace.

This book also felt a little different because it was a less about figuring out who the bad guy or girl was and more about figuring out how to catch that person, how to get that person to confess. Time was ticking so the excitement level was kept high plus there was a good twist I did not see coming which I always appreciate.

This didn’t really have the humor of some of the other books. Eve’s friends were not really in this one, so most of the book is trying to get the criminal. I did for the first time think Eve’s husband was actually pretty decent in this book (he normally annoys me) but then he inserted himself into a major police operation (he’s not police) which made me roll my eyes hard. Especially when he told Lieutenant Eve Dallas she could not do her job unless he came with her. I would have used the stun gun on him instead.

All in all this was an enjoyable book. I’m not in love with this series, but I do like it and helps to pass the time while I’m driving. I only have one book on CD left so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s as good as this one was. I would recommend this mainstream series to mystery fans.

The deaths in this book were caused by chemical weapons, and it was a bloodbath. I'm pro-bloodbaths in books. When only one or two people die, it can get boring. Plus, I hear that bloodbaths are really great for your skin.

Oh, maybe that was a MUD bath that is good for you. These guys look fabulous!

So, I enjoyed the unraveling of the mystery in this one, but my favorite thing in these books is the interaction between the characters. Unfortunately, we had very little McNab. But, there was a great moment between Peabody and Eve when Eve told her about what happened in Dallas.

(Peabody): "Did you tell me this when we were in the car and on our way to interview so I couldn't hug you?"

(Eve): "It's a side benefit."

"I'm going to hug you later. You won't know when it's coming."

"The same goes for my boot up your ass."

"That's a given. It's a daily surprise."

It was a touching moment.
And, what's the deal with Eve constantly telling people she will shove her foot up their ass? I can't decide if she's the dad from That 70's Show, or Hank Hill. Either way - a little creepy, Eve.

He must be Eve's ancestor.

Although I am anti-feet-in-body-orifices, I am definitely pro Eve's stance on cheating husbands:

"If you cheated on me, I wouldn't kill a bar full of people. Just you," she said with a big smile. "And I'd do it myself because that's how much I care."

Yeah, it takes the personal touch when dealing with a cheating asshole. Paying someone else to do it just doesn't give that same sense of satisfaction.

Of course, Roarke would never cheat because he is the ultimate, perfect, book-husband. Yes, I graduated him from book-boyfriend to book-husband. It is my right to fictionally marry another man and commit fictional bigamy if I want to. Don't you judge me!!

bigamy shmigamy. I do what I want...

Another fantastic read by JD Robb! I always love catching up with the gang... and especially Eve and Roarke! Not only do they have great sexual chemistry; they also have such a close bond emotionally too! I love how they get each other, and are able to be witty with one another as well!

Considering this is the 35 Th book in the In Death series and it still keeps me highly amused... I think it’s safe to say that JD Robb is brilliant and not a lot of authors can pull off what she does in keeping her series fresh and exciting! Most series when they get this high up, become dull and repetitive. I’m glad to report this one does not!
So, continue I will! Usually when I am in a rut with my reads, I come for my fill of Eve and Roarke!!!

Seemed to take me forever to read this. Family situation and travel meant I could not get in any reading time.

I kinda hate when it takes me forever to read a book as I sort of lose track of what happened earlier!!

"Bloody fucking hell."

"I want to keep you, till the end of days."

Bit knackered so this will be short and sweet.

Some lovely moments between Dallas and Peabody. x

Delusion in Death – J D Robb

I think after 45 books, novellas, and short stories it may be time to start another series, since this one seems to be bogged down and a caricature of what the series used to be. This book is written with the patented JD Robb formula and you cannot get away from it.
The book opens on a horrific scene of people murdering each other during a casual after-work drink in a neighborhood bar—over 80 people are dead. Enter Eve and team---pan to Eve's horrified demeanor and the sensibilities of Peabody being shaken to the core. Bring in the full team-enter Roarke, who is starting to really get on my nerves. Of course, Roarke owns the bar so should and will be sticking his rich nose into everything. The wrong people are accused, footwork is done, and Dr. Mira is consulted - all as per normal.

On one hand, we have an incident straight out of the Urban Wars. We have a drug let loose in several places inciting innocent people to horribly vivid blood lust and berserker behavior. This unnatural behavior lasts mere minutes but the havoc it creates leaves an incredible toll. Moreover, this alone should have been a fascinating story; to see Eve and the team search for the mastermind. Yet nobody takes responsibility for this crime, so there is nobody for Eve to really focus on. Yet even with no concrete ‘clues’ Eve will solve the crime mainly by pretty much lying to the accused.

On the other hand (as I have mentioned) you would think that to find the culprit that there would be dangerous action that is filled with fancy footwork and policing. You would think! At 64% into the book what we have is yet another deep recap of Eve’s admittedly horrific childhood, some interviews at the cop shop a couple of rote sex scenes, and miracle of miracles, Summerset and Eve work together, are polite to each other-dare I say- even nice to each other!

There really is not very much action in this story. What there is is a lot of blood and guts though. There is not a lot of Eve’s lighter side showing, some but not a lot.

I realize that in Eve’s world only about 2 years have passed, so technically she could be working on her issues for a long, long time. However, for the reader 17 real years have passed and with this many published works that many of us have read, the angst is getting a little redundant (at least for me). I for one would appreciate at least every other book to be without Eve’s and Roarke’s angst.

I really enjoy these books - even if I can't quite believe I'm up to number 44 in the series (if you count the short stories). I don't read them for depth or amazing plots with astonishing twists. I read them because I love the opportunity to hang out with Eve and Roarke. I generally read them quickly and find them easy, so all I have to do is sit back and enjoy myself.

I said a few reviews back that I take a lot of notes to help me remember stuff. With these, I don't. It's not about that (although if anyone can remind me which book included "Cassandra" I'd appreciate it). It's pure escapism and enjoyment.

I found this to be one of the stronger books lately. It has a interesting plot (although I hope she doesn't feel the need to keep upping the body count as there were a lot of dead people in this one), good character development for the regulars, especially as Eve addresses some of her issues from New York to Dallas. (Oh, I do love Dr Mira to bits.) There's a twist at the end that I didn't pick up - in fact I thought early on I had how the end was going to go down worked out, and I turned out to be totally wrong.

I know some readers are frustrated that Eve and Roarke seem to have worked out most, if not all, of the issues between them and feel the books have dropped in quality since then. Personally, I love it. I love watching two very different people who love each other to pieces working out living their daily lives together, without the angst and difficulties they have had in the past. It's so rare to get that in a book. Either you have a couple starting out with all the issues that involves, or a couple with their relationship in stress and disarray. Here, we have a great couple just living their lives, yet in a way that I still find hugely involving. I hope this continues as it adds to the "comfort read" aspect of the series for me. It's like sitting at home beside a roaring fire on a day when the weather is miserable, discovering that despite the rain and the grey, life is good.

My favourites in the series are those that have a good balance of relationship and mystery and this one had that for me. On reflection, we don't actually see a lot of extended cast doing much more than their jobs, but that lets us focus on Eve and Roarke, along with a nice, juicy side role for Mira.

Another thing I like about various book in the series, this one included, is that the team have worked out who the killer is by about halfway through the book, and most of the "why" of it by three-quarters. The second half of it is about finding the evidence to back up the gut feeling and stop the culprit from doing it again. I imagine this is what a lot of police cases are like, rather than the sudden, unexpected twist at the end that so many books have. This one is about doing the job rather than surprising the reader - although there was a surprise as well. I can see this not working for some readers, but it worked for me.

We've got a little bit of world-building history added in as well, although I readily acknowledge that world-building is not what this series is about. But we get a bit of history about Summerset and more on the Urban Wars (although they do still remain fairly vague).

So all in all, a good addition to the series and one I really enjoyed reading. As always, I'll be pre-ordering the next one.

This was bound to happen. While my LOVE for Eve, Roarke and the rest of the team is unwavering, I just didn't love the theme of this one. For me it was missing something. I'm just not sure what.

What I did love was the Eve and Roarke moments that I look forward to, the scenes with Dr. Mira and Eve was touching and there was a moment with Peabody that just warmed my heart. ❤ We even get moments with Eve and Summerset that were actually amiable. Crazy right!

I was just bummed that the theme didn't have the action and craziness surrounding it that I've come to expect. No worries though. I can't wait to read the next one!!!

Thirty-fifth in the In Death romantic suspense series revolving around Eve Dallas and Roarke in a futuristic New York City.

My Take
Eve and Roarke are getting comfortable with each other and Eve is actually starting to get comfy with Summerset!!! In some respects. In others, Robb may be setting us up for issues. The disappointing aspect of this story was it being almost all police work with a few short bursts of personal time for Eve and Roarke. Not too much working out in the home gym, although Eve is back to having nightmares after events in New York to Dallas.

I do enjoy Eve's worry about the Marriage Rules and I love how Roarke pushes at her comfort zone, getting all touchy-feely at crime scenes, calling her "Lieutenant" as an affectionate nickname. Then there's Peabody's unrequited lust for Roarke, which Dallas is always shooting down in her inimitably possessive style:
Eve tells Roarke, "With me."

"Man," Peabody breathed. "I wish I could say that. Just once."

"Once would be all before I stabbed out your eyes with an ice pick."

"Ouch. Might be worth it."

"A dull ice pick," Eve added…

"Good night, Peabody." He sent her a smile that made her think, Still might be worth it.
Then there's always Roarke's acknowledgment of what makes Eve happy...
Then there's Eve's tripping up a 280-pound flasher and her enjoyment of an empty elevator car as a result, "Anyway, it gave me a little boost."

"It would be as kicking ass is your drug of choice."

"Maybe, but I only tripped him. No time to kick a naked flasher's ass right now."

"There'll be others, darling"

"Something to look forward to."
Lots of acting required in this one. I rather enjoyed Sanchez's quick pick up on what Dallas wants! Then Eve wants Roarke to play master of the universe. And then there's the ganging up on the bad guy, surrounding him with those inferior women.

I just realized one of the things I like about this series — Robb doesn't write Dallas as stupid. No, I mean beyond the obvious. I have whined in a number of reviews about the author too often writing the character as doing something stupidly out of character. Robb doesn't do this to us (or the character!), and I so appreciate this!

I feel so bad for Joe Cattery and his family. What a lousy reason to take someone out. This is just one result that occurs when we allow bullies to do as they please. When we don't stop them in elementary school. I just want to rant and rave on this and it's not the place, but...think about it.

Such hypocrisy in this! What is it with terrorists who whine on and on about the capitalist pigs even as they sit in the lap of luxury! I'll take Roarke any day...well, okay, he is a hunk and mega-rich. But he's also a man who gives back to the community in a meaningful way.

The Story
Something happened. Something triggered over eighty people in a cozy, after-work bar to rip and tear into each other. To kill each other in twelve minutes.

The effects are similar to certain events that occurred in Summerset's past and may well require Homeland Security to step in. An intervention Roarke will protest heavily, if only because of his intense anger with their past policies toward Eve.

The Characters
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is one of the best of New York City's police. A homicide cop married to one of the world's richest men...and the most gorgeous...Roarke. When he's not buying planets or intimidating countries, he's helping her with her cases as he's a whiz at electronics, hidey holes, and self-defense. Galahad is their cat. Summerset is Roarke's foster father, friend, and butler at their house.

Detective Delia Peabody is her partner and her friend. McNab is an EDD cop and Peabody's significant other. Morris is the chief medical examiner and another friend. Captain Feeney heads up EDD and is Eve's mentor and another friend; Callendar is one of his EDD detectives. Dickie "Dickhead" Berenski is the chief lab tech and very good at his job. When he can be bribed into doing it. Not a friend. Dr. Mira is a psychiatrist and another of Dallas' friends. Lieutenant Lowenbaum heads up the SWAT team and he has a few secrets to reveal about Dallas to Roarke. The detectives in Dallas's department include Baxter and Trueheart, Jenkinson and Reineke, and Carmichael and Sanchez. Commander Jack Whitney is her superior; Tibble is chief of police. Kyung is the media liaison; he's not an asshole.

Nadine Furst is the top reporter for Channel 75 as well as an author and an excellent crime investigator. Eve has made use of her resources in the past. She is another friend due to her own sense of ethics. Mavis, Bella, and Leonardo are more of a cameo in this.

CiCi Way, Lydia McMeara, and Dennis Sherman are victims who survived. Devon Lester is the manager of the bar; Quirk McBane is an art teacher and his life partner. Devon's brother, Christopher, is a chemist.

Agent Miyu Teasdale is the liaison from Homeland Security and a domestic terrorist specialist; Director Chad Hurtz is her boss and Tibble vouches for him. Nancy Weaver, Lewis Callaway, and Steve Vann all work in the Marketing and Promotion department at Steveson and Reede. Marty is CEO.

Red Horse was a small terrorist cult back during the Urban Wars led by Guiseppi Menzini. He took in and brainwashed Karleen MacMillon, who came home pregnant to the husband from whom she ran away. Gina and William MacMillon are on record as having a baby girl, Audrey Hubbard, who married Russell Callaway.

Gina Bellona has a vested interest in the terrorist activities.

The Cover
The cover is split into three horizontal bands: the top two-thirds is a metallic red showcasing the author's name; a much smaller band has a perforated background of black rubber showcasing the title; and, a narrow band at the bottom is a collage of metaphors about the story with a Trojan horse, a Homeland Security seal, a blur of people, and test tubes all a'tilt.

The title is the problem. It is a Delusion in Death for the victims.

September 2013: Okay, so it turns out this is the book you should re-read before Thankless in Death. And Nadine/Kyung hasn't happened yet, but I still live in hope.

Man, this one grabbed me. The method of the murders is freaking scary, and I'm sorta surprised they decided to release it on 9/11. I think Robb did a great job of capturing that imminent tension that existed here during that time period, that sort of terrifying anticipation for something you hope will never come.

This book focused more on the mystery and would probably do fairly well as a stand-alone. Past cases are name-dropped, especially Loyalty in Death and New York to Dallas, but it's easy enough to gather meaning from the context. There are no big new character developments, although there are some heartfelt scenes featuring Summerset.

On a personal note, Eve mentions, as a throwaway, forwarding information to Kyung (NYPD's media liaison) and I suddenly started shipping Nadine & Kyung. I don't know why, I just did. They've never had a scene together, but they obviously know each other (Nadine mentions talking to the media liaison on pg. 102) and it just made my brain start tingling.

While I really enjoyed Celebrity in Death, there has been a bit of sameness wafting around the series so Robb does need to inject it with something new. After 35 books, there aren't a lot of new places to take it and I'll be interested to see what, if anything, Robb settles on.

We have a bloodbath in this installment.  Multiple bodies.  A chemical weapon was used airborne that can cause someone to hallucinate with strong and violent reactions.  The killer has no respect fo humanity.  Another sick fuck killing one hundred and twenty seven people.  Who does that?

As  a murder cop for more than a decade Eve thought she had seen it all. It was one of the most terrible and horrible crimes in this installment.

"Kicking ass is your drug of choice."

"If you cheated on me, I wouldn't kill a bar full of people.  Just you.  And I'd do it myself because that's how much I care."  (Go Eve! :))

This one was freaky - an absolute bloodbath, but in the worst way I can even imagine... this new drug that can be released in a building and causes everyone who breathes it in to go nuts, killing everyone around them. The poor victims aren't just killed, they are made to kill people they know, love, who just happen to be present with them. Even for the survivors, it is just life-destroying.

Eve leading the team to hunt down the responsible party, and man I was on pins and needles throughout, worried she or someone on her team would be exposed to this drug.

I originally rated this one 4 stars but after rereading it, I'm changing it to 5 stars. The character relationships take some giant steps in this book. Eve & Summerset are especially touching, as they seem to come to a new understanding & exhibit a mutual respect for one another. I really loved their scenes. Eve & Mira as Dr. Mira continues mothering Eve, guiding her through the aftereffects of the nightmare that haunts her from Dallas. Eve & Peabody - one of my favorites...loved that Eve finally tells Peabody about Stella & what occurred in Dallas and that Peabody was angry for her and cried for her. Peabody is such a special character. Eve & Roarke - Always & Forever...love every scene they're in as a couple. Beautiful. It's always fascinating to follow Eve's mind as she works through solving a case, capturing the villain/s. I enjoyed this one. But it's the character relationship development that took this book to the next level for me. A Must Read!

I'm not gonna rate this one, because I got only to 20%. Could not finished. I don't get what all the fuss is about. First 3% was okay, but after that, there were just one boring conversation between investigators after another. Barely got to 20%.
Everytime new character was added to the story they got to hear the same description of what happened. I get it, they needed to know because they were part of the case, but why do you have put readers through that, we already knew what and how it happened. I felt like the story was going in circles. I lost all interest.

A twisted terrorist - a different spin on killers this time around. I liked this one because it was different from your regular serial killer-bad guy. The detecting work to narrow it down to who done it was enjoying to read and try to figure out. This was my second read, but I couldn't remember who the killer was until later.

I loved the banter - loved that Eve wore Peabody's pink cowboy boots! Some classic lines - don't forget the cannolis! When Eve was on the link to Roarke promising lots of sex and Reineke heard unbeknownst to Eve - I laughed out loud, knowing full well that it would come back on her inadvertently!

With this book, Summerset is more involved and Eve is okay with it - after all his "connections" had it on the mark. Interesting how Eve and Summerset are slowly putting their differences aside, to work together for the greater good - so-to-speak!

Anyways, I enjoyed this book - 2 thumbs up and 5 stars.

From the blurb: It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business professionals unwound with a few drinks . . . until something went terribly wrong. And after twelve minutes of chaos and violence, eighty people lay dead. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things - monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics gives its report, the mass delusions make more sense: It appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive anyone to temporary insanity - if not kill them outright. But that doesn't explain who would unleash such horror - or why. And if Eve can't figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere. Because it's airborne. . . .

SUMMARY (50 words or less)

Eve is back doing her thing as usual. I liked that Roarke was there but not there made it more realistic. The case was really interesting and although I picked the killer, he hadn’t been my first choice. Of course there were steamy scenes and Eve battling her demons.

Susan Ericksen does this series proud. I love her voices for the main characters. There were a lot of side character so some of the minor, minor character began to sound the same but it was forgivable.

This was a really good one-- I particularly loved the character moments between Peabody & Dallas in this one, and the mystery moved at a nice pace.

The start of this hooked me, a vicious bloodbath occurs in a nightclub, leading to a slew of deaths and those who are badly injured remember seeing monsters and other things there is no evidence of. Someone is playing with chemical weapons. So, it’s up to Eve, Roarke (who of course owns the club), Peabody and the rest of the team to uncover what happened and who is responsible before mayhem and panic ensues.

Again, fab interactions between Eve and Roarke, as well as Eve and Peabody. Roarke (sigh) had me laughing with his little joke near the end, as he caught the vials.

I am seriously dreading coming to the end of the series, the characters have become comfortable friends that I enjoy catching up with.

Thanks to the library fairies I can now move on to the next book in the series.
