Ziggy turns out to be Shiki from 20,000 years in the future! But why would future Shiki want to destroy all humans, and his own past self? More identities are revealed as secrets behind Rebecca's and Elsie's parents come to light. Still, too much remains unknown as the greatest powers of the universe continue their battle.
Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.
He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.
Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
I am not a huge fan of Ziggy's true backstory as it feels overly complicated and again with most stories that involve time travel it leads to a lot of plot holes that would make it hard to resolve them. I would have preferred if Ziggy was just a time traveler and not a future version of Shiki as that is the part that overly complicates things. But the rest of the volume is really well done and I really do like Cure and his motivations and his backstory does help resolve some stuff that was not fully revealed with some of the other members of the Oración Seis Galactica like how did Nero and Drakken. Also we also get some more shocking reveals with who Acnoella and Connor.
I guess I have to give five stars because this volume answers a LOT of the bigger questions in the series, even if there's still quite a bit much to remember what's going on. Also, as Mashima admits in the Afterword, while the bigger plot points were decided in the early stages, some plot points got ad-libbed on the fly, so it's a bit slapdash in places, particularly since he admits he wants to cut down the size of the cast. Hmm.
Recommended for fans who REALLY wanted to know about Ziggy! Not recommended for newcomers AT ALL, you'll be SO LOST. Sorry.
