I grew up in Texas in the seventies, and although I really wanted to go into writing and film from an early age, my parents (Cuban-American) were NOT on board.
They believed there were only three acceptable career paths for a male child: doctor, lawyer, and architect.
After a disastrous first year of college pre-Med (too much fun, not enough study), I ended up getting a BA in philosophy (not acceptable), then I went to law school (salvaging the family name).
In law school, I was lucky enough to be selected for law journal and my articles have been cited by courts and recognized on the National Law Journal’s “Worth Reading” list – which for law is like a top review in the New York Times (pretty cool).
After ten years as a trial lawyer, I decided that law and family life weren’t compatible. So, I went back to school for an MBA, and later pursued a PhD, crossing the line from well-educated to over-educated around the turn of the century.
With these credentials, I was able to leave law for corporate America, where I got to spend long stints working in Europe and Asia.
It was my wife who pushed me to write novels. And, after thousands of hours writing, and seven or eight literary miscarriages over the course of eighteen years, I am now a published fiction author!
We live all in South Florida (for now) with our six (yes - 6) dogs and one cat.
Johnny miracle has visited his last disrespectful action against Mary it is finally the straw that broke the camels back or will it be Johnny’s back? Although Mary isn’t the only one with an ax to grind when it comes to Johnny and the last thing she wants to do is lose her vineyard and all her and her grandma Nelly has accumulated it seems Johnny has been a busy bee from cheating on Mary with her sleazy friend Karen to bad land deals with crazy Eddie it seems while Johnny is surrounding his self with the ruthless and the lowdown Mary has a team of smart powerful women and the last thing they’re going to do is let a sleazy man like Johnny miracle out do their friend this includes a ruthless gangster name Ruby Who also happens to have a good looking son who Mary has noticed and Ruby has noticed her noticing. This book is so good and until the very last page you’re still turning the pages wanting to know what happens next. Will Johnny get what’s coming to him and if he does will marry be blamed? I would definitely call this book a whip smart battle of the sexist and I thoroughly enjoyed it I love JK Franco‘s books but I do believe the author has out done their self with Killing Johnny miracle. This is a definite five star read and one I highly recommend. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Killing Johnny Miracle by JK Franko is an incredible crime novel.
"A story about how a strong young woman finds her moral compass and life path while the universe is throwing buckets of shit at her."
In this line, the author used in his book describes quite accurately what the book is about. Mary Miracle in just a short time has been through hell and back but returned as a survivor. A motivated woman can do anything she puts on her mind and this story proves that. (But let's not take everything seriously, it's fiction after all.)
The writing was great, the plot sucks you in from the beginning. I liked that it started from a certain point in the past and moved forward. There aren't any flashbacks only a kind of side story about another woman. The use of that story will make sense in the end and probably not for the reason you can imagine.
I loved the characters. Especially Mary, her grandma Nellie, and Ruby, they were all so fierce and sure of themselves in the end. They had different background stories which I appreciated, I don't like it when there is an obvious pattern. One of my favorite parts was the ending with Mary's inner monologue.
If you love crime novels with lots of suspense then you have to read this book. You will thank me! I will rate it with 5 stars.
I loved the Talion/Roy Cruise saga and have been not so patiently waiting for JK Franko to release another book. Much like the namesake of this book, JK killed it again.
This book has it all - fast pace, twists on twists on twists, backstabbing, conniving plans, murder, and so much more. All is not what it seems as we flip back and forth between timelines and different POVs.
If you've read and enjoyed any sort of thriller in the past five years, you will love this one. Seriously, stop reading this review and go check it out now.
‘Killing Johnny Miracle’ by J.K.Franko is engrossing and unusual. Mary is the sole heir to her grandma assets and her property. Enter the greedy and opportunistic Johnny Miracle, who woos and marries Mary, even though her grandma mistrusts him. The story travels interestingly through this basic plot line, picking up sub-plots which join the main story one by one. Things get murky, deals are struck, someone dies. Read the book to know further. I found it clever and engaging.
Killing Johnny Miracle by J. K. Franko is such a well-written book. It's edgy, fast-paced, and pulls you in immediately. Franko's adroit storytelling immerses you from the start, refusing to release its grip until the final word. Johnny, a man no stranger to adversaries, is about to face the wrath of a scorned woman, as his soon-to-be-ex is determined to prove. You won't be able to put it down, deeply relating to the diverse and powerful female characters alongside Mary. Franko excels in bringing characters to life, involving the reader in the action with vibrant descriptions. It's an outstanding thriller that keeps you engaged throughout. Such a great read and highly recommended.
Well, butter my biscuit and call it a day, I've just finished Killing Johnny Miracle by JK Franko, and, it's a wild ride. Now, I've read my fair share of crime thrillers, but this one? It's like if you took a Texas summer, added a dash of dark secrets, and sprinkled in some good ol' fashioned revenge. The story revolves around Johnny Miracle, a man who thinks he's got life all figured out. He's in love, but not with his wife, Mary. " And Mary? She's got a plan of her own. The plot thickens faster than gravy on a Sunday morning. The authors writing style is as smooth as a glass of sweet tea, but with a kick that'll get you right in the feels. The characters are well fleshed out, with Mary standing out as a woman pushed to her limits, and the plot twists? Well, they come at you like a jackrabbit on a highway – fast and unexpected. This isn’t your average crime thriller, its about the lengths one would go to when pushed. Oooh the complexities of the human psyche!!!! I loved Killing Johnny Miracle, its a whirl. It's a tale of love, betrayal, and revenge, served with a side of suspense. Highly recommended
The title itself reveals the main plot, and this is what worked for me. I picked this book because of its straight yet unique title.
But whatever seems easy to get or understand has something hidden.
Although the title involves titular character Johny, the main character is his wife "Mary Miracle". The story is about her motive for developing a full-proof plan to kill her husband, Johny, and keeping herself away from the radar of suspicion. Six years after her marriage, she could understand that this marriage held no value; she knew about his affairs and motives. He was interested in her property and had no more options ves het.She gets hurt and understands the significance of removing him from her path before he can hurt her.
This brings further subplots, including her visit to her friend and discussing honestly the plan.
Although she had clear notice, she finds it difficult to plan a full-proof murder. She doesn't want to get suspected and out behind bars.
The dialogues are easy to understand, and words are selected carefully to maintain the ease of this mystery. read
There is no jargon, and the simple yet significant dialogues have made this read entirely unique. The subplots are seamlessly arranged to maintain the interest of the readers.
I thoroughly enjoyed it with a big cup of coffee, and it was a perfect weekend plan.
I have read J K Franco’s Eye For An Eye Trilogy and loved it, so it was a no brainer to grab Killing Johnny Miracle. I love books that smack of betrayal and revenge and Killing Johnny Miracle gave me more than I expected.
The first sentence: Mary Miracle would always recall with clarity the moment she decided to kill her husband.
After Mary decided Johnny had to die, she spent the rest of the week working out the best way to do it, the ‘best’ way meaning how to kill him in the manner that was least likely to end with her in prison or – as they lived in Texas – on death row.
With these quotes being on the first page, I anticipate many pages of wicked goodness, 409 to be precise, plus the author supplies us with an interview telling us how he came to write the book.
Johnny Miracle is quite the opposite of his name. He is more like a curse, and it is Mary’s misfortune to be the his target. He has his eyes on the prize, and it’s not his wife. I do love a great villain, and J K Franko supplied us with one in Johnny Miracle.
Mary’s grandmother dies and…well, here is where Mary begins to wake up to the awful possibilites in front on her.
Johnny Miracle is a scumbag, a cheater, but he is not alone when it comes to people who will betray Mary. Secrets, so many secrets and betrayals..
Things are bad for Mary early in the story, but in Chapter 43, J K Franko steps it up a notch.
Rubi Yi…who is she? I learn about her, but it takes me a while to see how she fits into the story….and I love it! Us ladies have to stick together, don’t we? When everything comes together, secrets are shared and messes are cleaned up. I was smiling.
What a fabulous story of betrayal and us women making things right in the end.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, no man, no matter how smart or strong, can compete with a motivated woman.”
As I read the Afterword, J K Frank had me smiling again. I love that all his ideas wouldn’t fit in Killing Johnny Miracle. That means more books for us to read. But, he covered the gist of it.
A story about how a strong young woman finds her moral compass and life path while the universe is throwing buckets of shit at her.
The book had my mind spinning and I love it. A tangled web, for sure, and a snake in the grass that kept me turning the pages.
I loved Mary’s character right from the first chapter. You know, she’s going to kill her husband, it says so in the blurb, it says so in the first sentence of the book, and yet through the whole book, I kept wondering is she really going to follow through with it, will she really do it? And the whole time I’m saying to myself "Oh God, I sure hope so!" What kind of person does this make me? LOL
Well, Johnny was just a jerk! There’s no other way to put it. Cheating, scheming, conniving, backstabbing, thieving jerk. If anyone “needed killing“ it was him. If Mary kills her husband - does that make her the "bad guy"? I guess legally it does, and yet you are rooting for her the whole way through the book.
The character development was fantastic! Oh my gosh I loved Mary. I thought she was gullible at times and stupid for believing in him and falling for his schemes, but without ruining the story because again, you know she’s gonna kill her husband… She ends up restoring my faith in her. And as much as you love Mary, you HATE her husband Johnny! Oh the author made him the perfect scumbag! But another one of my favorite characters is Ruby. Ruby was kind of a spin off story within the story, a secondary character, but a very prominent secondary character in the book and the whole time you don’t know what her purpose is in the story until the very end. I loved her! Man, she had guts! I would love to of read a whole book just about her.
A painting by Monet is another big part of this story and Monet happens to be my favorite artist. So I loved reading these parts.
This book was crazy... crazy fun, crazy wicked, crazy good, and crazy suspenseful! You just don't know what will happen next. Excellent writing that totally draws you in. My first one by this fantastic author but I am definitely putting more of his books on my list.
I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Partners in Crime Tours - Thank You!!
Even though I usually steer away from thrillers, I just couldn't put Killing Johnny Miracle down! It might have helped that I knew that he was going to die... And, with Johnny's character being a masterful compilation of every imaginable negative trait, anyone would have plenty of reasons not to want him around.
I loved how this book elevates the female figure. From Ruby Yi's parallel story to the many intriguing twists and turns, there is a woman at the center of every significant event. I enjoyed watching the female characters evolve throughout the story - a very sharp contrast to Johnny's psyche of stagnation and egotistical one-sidedness.
At the heart of this novel is Johnny Miracle, a man who believes he's holding all the cards. But life, as we know, doesn’t always go as we planned. Enter Mary, his wife, a force to be reckoned with. The dynamics between these two are mixed, sometimes harmonious, often confrontational. The prose is seamless, with undercurrents of depth and intensity. The characters are full of life, and definitely relatable, lovable and so human. The twists in the story are completely unpredictable. there were many times where i didnt see things coming until they slapped me in the face. Franko is fast becoming a favourite of mine and , "Killing Johnny Miracle" is another reminder of why, It wasn’t just a good read, it was an experience. A heat-pounding, exciting experience. 5 stars from me!
Johnny Miracle plans to leave his wife Mary and take her to the cleaners. Johnny is an unlikable yet realistic character who has fallen in love with another woman and plans to live a long and happy life with his new love. What he doesn’t expect is that Mary is going to fight him.
This is a well developed plot that draws you in immediately. The characters are relatable and multidimensional. The women are strong characters. You will not be disappointed reading this book.
This is really a 10 star book in my mind. Where do I start? Let's see, an old murder cover up, a new murder, future murders, and another parallel story with Ruby, drenched in murder. The twists and turns will keep your head spinning every which way until they all come together in one of the best endings in a book that I have ever read. Oh and did I mention how good the story is too. I more than loved this book. Sure, I'd read more from this author, really anything this author would write. Sign me up!!!!
This story was absolutely awesome! I loved how everything came together at the end—it was so cool the way the author did it. I was very curious on how Penelope and Ruby were relevant to the story. Without spoiling anything, I loved their relevance.
This was written so well, and seeing how Mary and Johhny went back and forth with one another kept me in suspense. I couldn't stop reading because I was afraid I'd miss something important. I was so curious about what was going to happen to them both and when something was going to happen to them.
Now, of course, I was rooting for Mary all the way. I thought she was such a strong and smart character. What I really liked was that every time it looked like she was in trouble, she had a backup plan ready to go. It made the story even more exciting.
The writing was just right—easy to follow and enjoyable. Overall, it was an amazing read that blended suspense, strong characters, and a really satisfying ending. I not only stayed interested the whole time but also got left with a lasting impression. I am looking forward to reading other books by the same author.
When I learned to sew in another century, I remember pulling out all the tissue paper pattern pieces of various sizes from the package. I looked at the completed dress on the package front, then back at the pattern pieces, and thought, “This is going to be interesting.”
I get the same feeling while reading a JK Franko novel.
His method of storytelling and delivering back story keep me thinking, guessing, and reading.
Sometimes, I’d start a chapter and think I’d opened the wrong book. “Wait. What does this have to do with anything?”
But make no mistake, this read has no fat or filler.
Mary Miracle is nice enough, in a sweet and albeit frustrating way. By the time she reaches college, Mary has already survived more than her share of life’s challenges, and understanding her place in the universe is important to her, especially after she meets her future husband, Johnny Miracle.
Her loving eyes blinded her to Johnny’s many flaws and faults, and I was stunned at her naivete and gullibility. However, when more personal tragedy in Mary’s life shines a BRIGHT light on the depths of Johnny’s evil, her blinders – and the gloves – come off. Go, Mary! Now, she must decide if and how she can kill Johnny Miracle.
The fun part is Mary isn’t the only person who wants her husband dead.
Johnny’s a narcissistic jerk who always believes he’s the smartest person in the room. And, when it comes to his wife, he believes he can steal her birthright and simply walk away.
Fun Fact – Johnny is never the smartest person in the room. Even the people he schemes with aren’t too bright, but they’re smarter than he is, which is still a low bar.
This read has great characters from both sides of the spectrum, but my hat’s off to The Rhinestone Realtor and Ruby Yi.
Killing Johnny Miracle is my favorite Franko novel so far, and I’ve read them all.
Greed, jealousy, and arrogance are major themes of Killing Johnny Miracle as it blurs the line between right and wrong. But, sometimes when they go low, going high is not an option.
In Killing Johnny Miracle, author JK Franko takes the reader behind the scenes of a riveting crime thriller as a couple turns on each other when their marriage falls apart, and they engage in a dangerous game of trying to outsmart each other in order to acquire all the marital assets.
Killing Johnny Miracle easily draws the reader in from the start. The reader will be captivated as author JK Franco weaves a thoroughly intriguing and complicated story that follows married couple Johnny and Mary Miracle as their marriage falls apart, and Johnny is determined to take everything from Mary, while Mary discovers what Johnny is up to and is determined to stop him at all costs, even if it is killing him off, and she's not the only one that Johnny has deceived and has him in their crosshairs. Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive ....
The author provides the reader with a richly detailed crime thriller set in Austin, Texas. You can't help but get drawn into this complicated, fascinating, and multi-layered story. It has enough drama, secrets, deception, betrayal, tension, and revenge that keeps the reader guessing as they turn the pages. This story has an intriguing cast of characters, an intensity level that is off the charts, and a multitude of vicious twists and turns that keeps the suspense going until the surprising ending. You can't help but root for Mary and hope that the despicable Johnny Miracle gets everything that he deserves!
Killing Johnny Miracle is an intense crime thriller that is a must read for all crime thriller fans.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Partners In Crime Tours. I also received a Kindle copy of the book from my Kindle Unlimited Program.
Killing Johnny Miracle is a Page-Turner from Beginning to End. This book is the first novel I have read from JK Franko, but it is written perfectly for readers to fall in sync with the fast-paced flow and interconnected storylines and characters. The author keeps the novel moving with just enough twists, turns, suspense, and character dynamics that it's impossible to put down from beginning to end. While it seems there are some unrelated side stories at times, the pieces fall into place just when needed to create a thrilling read for readers.
Expect Strong Characters, Interesting Dialogue, and Well Connected Dots. I loved the characters in this novel--even the ones I probably wasn't "supposed" to love. The author interjected just enough human nature to keep his plot twists both believable and engaging. The stories flow at even paces and connect very well, with all stones turned and all of the dots connected by the end. If you enjoy strong female characters--this novel holds plenty to hold your interest.
Would I Recommend Killing Johnny Miracle by J.K. Franko? Since the primary story seems spelled out in the title, I wondered if the novel would hold many suspenseful thrills. I was pleasantly surprised (and thrilled) with the novel and the author's storytelling style. This book is the first novel I've read from this author, but it won't be the last. If you enjoy a well-crafted suspense novel with wonderful characters and an organized, well-connected plot--this book should be on your reading list.
I received a digital copy of this book from the author or publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
I received a gifted copy and am providing a review. Who could resist a book that starts out with this sentence: ‘Mary Miracle would always recall with clarity the moment she decided to kill her husband.’ I knew from that sentence that I would not be able to put this book down. I’ve always heard that the first sentence has to grab a reader’s attention. This one did. Now, you know the premise of this book. Mary was not happy with Johnny Miracle … at all. This is quite a twisted tale. It tells so much more than just Mary and Johnny’s story. We get to meet Grandma Nellie … she has a very dark secret. Pedro is the farm’s handyman. ‘Sick Eddie,’ at least that’s what he’s called. Johnny should not have messed with ‘Sick Eddie.’ Of course, you have a handful of lawyers … because, why not? Not to mention the detective who was working a cold case. These pages are full of deceit between Mary and Johnny, which I found to be quite entertaining. Johnny is dumb enough to think that ‘Sick Eddie’ would just forget about him as he thought he was small potatoes and daggum … he should’ve bought that calculator. Mary found out some truths which made her all the more ambitious, if you will, to get rid of the problem. Oh! And let’s not forget the Monet – the painting Mary inherited from Grandma Nellie. And the vineyard. It’s too bad Johnny didn’t think Mary was as smart as she turned out to be. I would not hesitate to read more of this author’s work. He has a way of weaving a tale that will capture the reader’s attention. If I had more time, I would’ve probably finished this book a lot sooner than I did.
Reading the blurb for this book, I felt like I was going to be treated to one of those women-killer shows that I love to watch and keep my husband in line with (KIDDING! Okay, so yes, I watch them, but I married one of the good ones. Please feel free to laugh at the second part of that sentence). They dynamics of marriage – a ritual as old as time – is fascinating. Even more so when you get a front row seat to the demise of one.
J.K. Franco takes us on a twisted version of a crime thriller that needs to be hitting every single bookshelf of crime thriller lovers everywhere. I was white-knuckled as I read, gripping the covers between my hands, only relieving them long enough to flip to the next page. We get the treat of two stories that are intricately woven with subplots that develop and smack us in the face before we can really connect the dots. I had to pick my mouth up several times throughout when realization hit me at how certain aspects intertwine.
Love and betrayal are always messy when they go hand in hand and that’s precisely why I loved this book. We all like to pretend like we’d be the “adults” of the situation and simply move on, but there were secrets, lies, and revenge that led our key players to reach the boundaries of what they could/would tolerate. When we read about cases like this in the news or see it on TV, we don’t get all the critical background information that you get in a story like this. You’ll quickly discover where your lines of morals rest and question your own ideas on what you’d do in particular situations that Mary found herself in.
JK Franko has proven himself a truly talented writer, showcasing his knack for building compelling characters and weaving intense conflicts within them. Franko's ability to effortlessly keep the reader engaged from the very beginning, establishing a solid connection and then skillfully guiding us into the emotional depths we crave.
One of the standout characters in this book is Mary, a captivating and multi-dimensional protagonist who follows a relatable pattern of rationalizing toxic relationships or avoiding the problems that inevitably arise. Through expertly executed flashbacks, we are taken on a journey through Mary's life, witnessing the pivotal moments that shape her and ultimately lead to her life-altering decision to take care of Johnny.
Franko's writing is remarkable, with numerous lines etched into the reader's mind long after finishing the book. The exploration of morality versus legality in Mary's introspective moments is particularly thought-provoking, forcing us to question our beliefs and choices.
Overall, Beneath the surface of Johnny's death lies a wealth of depth and complexity, and Franko's novel is an exceptional and masterful exploration of it. Despite its length, the story progresses swiftly, each page filled with purpose and significance, making it a worthwhile and engaging read.

JK Franko has proven he has a knack for building characters and creating dramatic turmoil within them. Franko does a beautiful job keeping the reader hooked, latching on early and then stepping back to give us the character connection we crave.
Mary is a wonderfully rich character, following the very human and real pattern of rationalizing bad relationships to justify staying in them or avoiding the problems that arise. We get to see her journey through jumps in the past that highlight pivotal moments in Mary’s ultimate conclusion to take care of Johnny.
As far as the writing, a good number of quotable lines stand out, some of which will probably sit with me forever. Big sins die slow deaths. There are moments when morality versus legality are explored in Mary’s introspective bits.
Overall, I'm happy with this book and glad to have it on my virtual shelf. There’s a lot under the iceberg of Johnny’s death, and this was a fantastic way to explore it. This is a long book, but it goes fast and is worth every page.
A truly enjoyable story. I enjoyed this book Immensely.
The plot of this book pulls you in from the very Beginning. And does not let go. That's Totally awesome.. Loved This book.
I love how this book has different parts. The divide sections in the book. Also it has different years. And then everything wraps up perfect in the end..
Mary has so many reasons, To want to kill her husband.. More reasons than anyone else. While johnny makes so many non friends. And He's not a nice guy let's just say Johnny has a way of making things worse for himself..
Johnny is out for johnny, But makes a few mistakes.. All while trying to be the good guy.. I must say, this was a damm good book..
And I truly Loved every minute of it. Read this book in three Settings. It's an absolute perfect story..
So I would definitely recommend it to my friends..
I don’t know how Franko does it - grabs you from the outset and just refuses to let you go until you’ve finished the last word. Johnny isn’t the kind of guy with a lack of people who wouldn’t mind getting their hands on him violently, but you know what they say, there’s no fury like a woman scorned. (And his soon-to-be-ex has every intention of proving that when we meet her.) I couldn’t stop turning pages, and I loved all the women that Mary had fighting on her side. Franko does an amazing job of making characters almost leap off the page, while simultaneously dropping the reader into the action with vivid descriptions. A great thriller that I can’t recommend enough!
Ok, Killing Johnny Miracle was a great read. I Love how JK Franko keeps you wanting more. The title gives it away that we are killing Johnny Miracle but why? Because he deserves it! Ha Seriously though this book is strongly written for the woman who is motivated. JK Franko's style has been consistent which I love. Suspenseful, griping, moral compass and the law. We have Ruby's story, Mary's story, and Nellie's story that all intertwine perfectly together. I recommend this to everyone. JK Franko did not disappoint!
There's a lot going on in this book, much more than the title eludes to. Killing Johnny Miracle is the culmination of so many twists, turns and characters, that it's hard not to get caught up in what's happening and how it will tie together. Not a typical good vs bad, some win and some do not. But my favorite part of the book was that light bulb moment near the end. Well done.
My momma suggested this book to me. It’s got some humor, drama, love, and murder. So basically, it’s an entertaining read. I’ll be real, I’m proud to be a woman and I think we are amazing, but I am not into women power, male bashing reads. This book did a great job of showing the strength of women without it being over the top and annoying.
