By night, they fight in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. By day, they are friendly next-door neighbors. Neither of them know that their alter egos are archenemies.
I’ve spent my life training in the family business of slaying vampires, but I’m tired of all the death. I want to prove we slayers can help society, not just break it.
I start my new life by joining the Magiford supernatural task force, which exists to protect humans and supernaturals from harmful magic.
There’s just one problem.
All of my teammates who work the night shift with me are scared of me since slayers are the assassins of the supernatural world. Worse yet, even though I’m doing my best at pretending to be a human during the day—a necessity as a lone slayer can quickly become a dead slayer—I’ve utterly failed to win over any of the humans in my apartment complex since I have the charisma of an overdue investigation report.
That changes when a handsome vampire moves in next door. Connor may not be willing to try any of my failed attempts at baking, but he’s charming and not afraid of me. Plus, he’s the first friend I’ve made who has the time to hang out with me after work.
Things are looking up, or they would be, except a mysterious and extremely powerful vampire has declared downtown his nightly hunting ground. I’m the only one on my team who can match him in a fight, something he finds endlessly entertaining. That isn’t a good sign for my general life expectancy.
My greatest goal might be to win over my squad, but if this vampire doesn’t back off I might not live long enough to achieve it.
My pen name is K. M. Shea, but my readers—I prefer to call them Champions—call me Kitty.
I love to write funny, clean stories with strong characters. Books like that are among my favorite to read so naturally I love writing stories like that as well. My philosophy is that life is tough, so books should be something that makes you relax and laugh!
I finally got to start this series!!!! My family and I waited until the whole trilogy was available to start because Kitty had some MEAN cliffhangers in her other Magiford books so we weren’t going to take any chances, lol. But now it’s here and I really liked it!
Jade is such a fun character and I love the insight into what it’s like to have social anxiety and her thought process when trying to talk to others—very eye opening! She’s also really good at being a supernatural “cop” in a sense, though I agree with her team that she needs to be more careful and have more self preservation, haha.
Considine is a jerk, plain and simple. He’s the first male lead in Magiford that I absolutely dislike, though I will admit he has promise to be less of a jerk by the end of the book, though Kitty will have to work hard to convince me that he and Jade are going to work as endgame because right now I’m not seeing it.
This is definitely more chill than the previous series as we’re separated from the whole Organization plot line (or are we…???), and I love how this is more of a supernatural crime/cop story with a group of truly wonderful and funny characters who I’m more then happy to get to know better, not to mention all the Drakes that appeared made me giddy with fangirl joy!
I super enjoyed this and am eager to see where this story goes!

I've been waiting impatiently for the next addition to the story of Magiford. The story serves to flesh out the Magiford downtown prior to Chloe's storyline. Lots of characters from the other books pop in for cameos. Gotta love an anxiety ridden heroine and Considine was growing on me by the end. Their friendship was believable and I'm looking forward to watching it deepen.
My only complaint is that the book cover is awkward.
Look who’s back in Magiford for the dozen-to-the-power-of-ten(th) time 👀 Couldn’t be me 😂 _______________
To all the friends who shouted their love of K.M. Shea books, thank you. I get the hype. I’m utterly sold. Completely invested. Totally in my paranormal era. 🤩
The world building threw my pea-sized fantasy understanding brain for a loop at the beginning but that quickly passed. The group banter & dynamic is EVERYTHING.
Now onto the next instalment because I have no patience and NEED more immediately!
How do I even put into words how fabulous this book was?!?!
First of all I LOVE learning about Jade the vampire slayer. Her powers are so cool and very creative. I love it!
I love the dynamic between her and Ruin! Absolutely love love love it so much!
There is so much mystery in this first book. World building is fantastic and all these little intriguing things that keep getting dropped in this storyline has me so hooked! I need the next book right now!!
The plot was fascinating, the fantasy fighting was awesome, magic was sweet, and the characters and their personalities are unbelievably unique and I adore it.
Can I give this book 100 stars? It deserves it!
👄No romance (yet) ⚠️Fantasy violence, social anxiety for our FMC
I felt like the FMC's social anxiety was a little OTT at times, and also, as usual, I thought the MMC needed a kick to the nuts. But that's the pattern with this series - the MMC always starts out cold and asshole-ish, generally an old supernatural who has withdrawn (emotionally) from life in order to protect his long-lived self. And the FMC shatters those walls like they are made of eggshell. It's a formula that works for me. :)
I adore each and every one of K.M. Shea's Magiford books (well, all of her books, really, though I especially love Magiford), and this one is no exception!
This one is a bit of a step back in time. It takes place roughly during Pack of Dawn and Destiny and before Gate of Myth and Power. It is PACKED with camoes from characters and places from previous books, and I was cackling over several of them!
While all the previous Magiford books were about characters who had either grown up in Magiford or had lived in Magiford long enough that it felt like home for them, this book features 2 main characters who are both new to Magiford, and that was a fun perspective to have on a city that has become very familiar and beloved to us readers.
Jade is a really fun character. She is super skilled at fighting...but has social anxiety. Which is NOT helped by the fact that she's the new girl both in town and in her unit. Oh, and she happens to be a vampire slayer.
Considine is a very ancient, very put upon vampire who is downright bored with life and who's sole goal is keeping a promise he made to a long dead friend. It was a bit weird to see him literally outpower Killian Drake (who was a main character in a previous series and SUPER powerful in his own right). I loved the scenes with the Drake family, and I can't wait until Considine actually finagles a meeting with Hazel (because he is going to one way or another).
The ending of this one is great, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book to see the implications of the last scene revelation play out!
I re-read the entire Magiford series, putting this series 3rd after Blood/Mercy and the Night Court series. The story makes greater sense within the structure of the over-arching series when it’s before the Elf/Shadow series and the Northern Lakes series as it previews the issues with the Unseelie courts and Wolf mercenaries. It’s still highly derivative, but makes more sense within the timeline.
Original review:
This is the 5th series of books set in KM Shea’s Magiford universe.
Although, I have, for the most part, enjoyed the Magiford AU and generally liked most of the books, this one is sloppier than usual. It also departs from the 12 previous books set in Magiford that featured supernatural criminals using elven artifacts to cause mayhem and destabilize the supernatural community. In this book, elven artifacts are out and now it’s shifter artifacts and fae magic causing problems. There is still no progress on who is behind all the crimes plaguing the city. And the previously established characteristics of the various supernatural species also are out. No one mentions that Wizards smell bad to vampires. Vampires are now weaker and slower than werewolves. Only werewolf hunters have supernatural skills - Vampire slayers just train hard and have poisonous blood.
Despite having written and published going on 20 books, Shea continues to misuse and misspell words. Think “intension” instead of “intention”. She repeats herself within a paragraph or two and her odd sentence structure seems to have gotten worse. Think “guiltily stared” instead of “stared guiltily”. I particularly enjoyed that a painting was in the style of neoclassicism instead of neoclassic or neoclassical.
One of the things that stood out is that the names of the various characters were bizarre. I am in a profession where I see literally hundreds of names daily. Who names their baby “Juggernaut”? Or leans so hard into naming their kids after gems that they chose Alexandrite and Peridot as baby names. Also, “Sarge” is a nickname for the rank of Sergeant. It’s not an actual name. So, why doesn’t the “Sarge” character have a name?
I'm a little torn on this one, but first I just have to say I am a big fan of Ms. Shea's Urban Fantasy Magiford series, it's so much fun! I always get excited when I see a new book/trilogy coming out.
Anyway, this was fun. I really enjoyed the characters of Jade and Conner and the scenes they have together were a lot of fun. I loved getting things from Conner's POV, and his interactions with Killian (from the Magic Forged trilogy) were delightful. I loved the whole friends during the day, enemies at night thing. Lots of fun there. What has me a bit torn is I found myself a tad...bored, when Jade was at work and doing other things and was just looking forward to when she would be interacting with Conner again. I get its setting up for the rest of the series and overall I enjoyed the story, but would have liked even more page time between the two.
I am so grateful that Ms. Shea doesnt wait a year between releases and happy the second book comes out this weekend so I can dive back in. Overall, it was a fun addition to the Magiford series and I continue to enjoy the world building and characters were getting to know there.
Content Rated PG No romance, but a budding friendship that hints at more, possibly? Hopefully! No language, some magical violence fighting creatures.
--------------------------
The title alone could have warned me. I didn't even get to page 50 when I couldn't take it any more. The book reads like particularly bad fan fiction, and even the urban fantasy setting can't save it.
It was aight. I kinda wanna read the next two books, but god, the writing, especially for Jade, just feels lifeless. Does she even have a personality? Half the time, these UF books have this god-awful childish vibe to them.
A powerful, millennia-old vampire, bored with life, and a rebellious young vampire slayer who wants to escape her family legacy. Their adventures, which just start in this book, are proving wildly entertaining. Sadly, the other books in this series are not published yet. I can't wait. I didn't like this story as much as the other Magiford books (and I read and enjoyed them all), basically because there are too many fights in this one, but it was still a solid, diverting urban fantasy. I hope the other books in the series follow soon, as the story just began to unfold.
I adore the Magiford series for its wholesomeness and my absolute favorite is the Pack of Dawn and Destiny, which is probably the most 'serious' and emotional of the series so far. In comparison to that, The Lies of Vampires and Slayers is much more OTT (reminiscent if K. M. Shea's Magical Beings Rehabilitation Centre), bordering on being pure crack-fic. It took me a while to get into this book as a result, as the start of the book introduces Jade and her comical squad. Jade's struggle to socialize, while relatable on paper, was portrayed in such an OTT way that it wasn't very... emotional I suppose. I also think the squad shenanigans weren't particularly funny, so in combination with the fact that Jade and Considine didn't exactly have extraordinary synergy, the beginning dragged a lot. However, I warmed up towards the characters, and the latter parts of the book were definitely more interesting.
FMC /JADE:- A vampire Slayer from an elite Slayer family, Jade decides she wants to protect rather than kill; thus she joins Curia Cloisters. Jade suffers from social anxiety when it comes to her fellow humans and supernaturals, except when it is work and they are what she hunts.
MMC /CONSIDINE /CONNOR:-One of the only Elders of Vampires who is awake, Connor is easily bored with his long existence. But the promises made keeps him awake. He is a snarky guy with too much power.
REVIEW
There is just something about this series that's uber comfy to read. There are no strong emotional roller-coasters that leave you winded. But that doesn’t mean it is with no depth or character. In fact, the book is one of those good and clean ones that focus more on character and on plot, to make it a fascinating story full of charm.
Chaste af! Xd
No kiss. No sex. Only banter, snark, bad cooking and social anxiety. Also friendship.
READ OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES TO UNDERSTAND THE WORLD AND ITS DEVELOPMENT.
I didn’t realize how much I needed another Kitty book until this one showed up on my kindle.
While Killian is still my favorite vamp, it’s fun to see another over-powered vampire getting swayed vivacious “human” woman. Considine’s dry humor and clear disdain for his old friend’s underlings made me chuckle. And let’s not even mention Jade getting under the skin.
And Jade!!! What an amazing FMC! She’s not so kickbutt that she’s not relatable, but she can also hold her own against Considine. Her social fumblings, desire to fit in, and inability to cook anything makes her a fun character to read.
Overall, this is a solid start to a new series, and the other Magiford Easter Eggs make this SUCH a fun read!
– this is the first of a trilogy and should be read in order
– this is part of K. M. Shea’s Magiford world and though this trilogy could be read on its own, it is more enjoyable if you’ve read at least the Hall of Blood and Mercy trilogy (starts with Magic Forged; another great one to read first, but less needed would be the Court of Midnight and Deception trilogy which starts with Crown of Shadows)
– this is told from Jade & Considine’s points of view
– Jade has social anxiety and is trying to overcome it
Review:
Oh boy is Jade going to be in for a doozy next book! XD I loved this book so much and how Jade tried to balance her two lives in a way to keep herself safe from retaliation when off duty. I loved seeing her try to get past her social anxiety and somewhat achieving it a bit at times and then second guessing herself. I loved that Considine ended up being so entertained by Jade’s everything that he’d end up seeking her out more times than not, despite having resolved not to allow himself to get involved when he first moved in. I loved that Considine got on Killian’s nerves and managed to easily avoid him when he didn’t care to be found. (I’m curious to know if the Paragon will come up in a future book in a place that Considine will be and what he’d bring to the dynamic between Killian & Considine. The Paragon on his own is very entertaining, but with how he gets on Killian’s nerves as well, things could get a little extra interesting!) I loved the mystery aspect of the incidences Jade and her coworkers were investigating. I’m curious to find out why these incidences occurred and what the true influencers behind the one caught in this book are trying to achieve. I also really loved the interactions that our slayer and vampire had when Jade was on patrol with her coworkers. It was so entertaining to read their banter and see what the vampire was trying to achieve when he decided to bug Jade. I’m so excited for the next book!
Summary:
Jade is a slayer who wants to be more than an assassin, she wants to be someone who can make life better for supernaturals rather than someone feared by supernaturals. In an effort to separate herself from the life she grew up in, Jade moved to Magiford to join their supernatural task force – essentially the cops for supernatural matters that have the safety of both supernaturals and humans in mind. By day, Jade masquerades as a normal human that works as a secretary for the Curia Cloisters – a supernatural hub of information and politics. By night, she’s a feared slayer on the task force that makes even her coworkers quake in their boots, unfortunately. Being a slayer and a person who has social anxiety has not been kind to Jade when it comes to making friends. That is until a vampire moves in next door. Connor’s vampire charisma doesn’t work on Jade, but his vampire presence does make it possible for her to push aside her anxiety to get more than stumbled words out. While Jade is overjoyed at this new development, she doesn’t have much time to truly dwell on it with the current issues arising in the supernatural world. The biggest being a new and very powerful vampire in town claiming part of downtown Magiford as his territory. And he’s also set his sights on the lone slayer on the task force as the perfect entertainment for him to battle with, no matter what Jade’s up to at the time. This vampire has no care for work schedules, only his own agendas…
Considine is one of the most powerful vampires around and has been tasked by one of his past friends with the care of said friend’s vampire offspring. If Considine had his way, he’d never have had any responsibility for other vampires. As it is, these Dracos offspring are exasperating enough to keep in line by giving them wake up calls every couple centuries to keep them moving instead of lying around in their coffins. Nothing has truly been remotely entertaining or fun to Considine with these tasks taking up his efforts. That is until he moves to Magiford to check in on a certain Eminence of the Midwest who is being questionable as of late in comparison to his powerful & ruthless past. Though things appear to be the same, Considine has to keep a discrete eye on his charge without being surveilled in return. This leads Considine to a human apartment building – the last place the vampires would think to look for him – and in it, an oddly socially anxious human by the name of Jade. Considine is oddly intrigued by the human’s exuberance at all the events and little things around town and finds himself allowing her to drag him in to her orbit…
Little slow to start and then it picked up. I'm really interested in the world and the premise of a vampire slayer that is now working with vampires and other supernatural creatures. I thought the idea that the supes based their department and how it works on tv show procedural's so there are some things that are pointless for their world to use. Jade and her social anxiety was interesting and i really want to see how things go with Connor now.
A bit slow moving and without the action one who has read previous series from this author has come to expect. Still, Jade is a super fun and interesting FMC and the premise is an intriguing one, so I’ll happily continue to see what happens!
There are so many reasons I keep coming back to every book K. M. Shea writes. Top of that list are her amazing female main characters.
And Jade is no exception. They’re strong in unconventional ways, weak in relatable ways and more powerful than they know giving the reader something to root for and believe in.
Considine may be my new favorite MMC. He’s got the cynicism that Kitty is so good at, and the hiding gooey center for only those he cares about, but with a playful side that fits him so well.
Their back and forth has already pulled me in completely and it’s only the first book in the trilogy. I love the nicknames and night and day dynamic they’ve got going.
I love the way Kitty has portrayed their interactions with the side characters just as much. Between her squad and her family and his role as caretaker she’s given us not only additional people to love, but a deeper understanding of our main characters.
I love the way she wrote Jade’s anxiety. While it’s an obstacle creating both tension and comedic relief, it’s not debilitating and is something Jade is actively working on improving, however unsuccessfully.
I love the twists she gave to the story, and the cliff hanger left me both satisfied and dying for the next book. This book was a genuine delight to read.
I tried for 30 days and finally gave up at the 70% mark. I thought about finishing it just for the sake of it but the time I’d spend to complete it would be wasted as I do not care about any of the characters, the plot, or their relationships.
4☆ for the characters and their chemistry 3☆ for plot, which was almost non-existent until the last half (the first half involved Jade going on random wild goose chases while zero % plot was revealed)
I picked this one up despite not being at all interested in the Magiford series because the protagonist sounded cute and fun. She was very cute and fun I shall be continuing her adventures.
that horrible horrible feeling when your go to slump breaker unserious but effortlessly funny author fails you. am i growing too old for these books 0r is it just the vampires? (still waiting for a vampire book that actually serves, don't judge me)
