Exclusive Interview and Review at Of Pens and Pages.

Seducing the Defendant is a steamy romance between a lawyer and his client, with low angst and a surprisingly heartbreaking plot twist near the end. Just when you think things are going too smoothly, Ms. Fernando is right there to punch you in the heart with feels.

Jaxon Bentley is one of the best defense lawyers out there, and when a high-profile case comes knocking on his door, he accepts it. He has a strong feeling she didn’t kill her husband and will do his best to prove her innocence. Each day he spends with his client, he finds he likes her very much and is attracted to her.

Scarlett Reyes is accused of killing her husband, but she didn’t do it, could never do it, no matter how much she suffered from him. She was out of the country when it happened, but the gun was in her house and people are making it look like she ran away because she killed him. But Jaxon promised her he’ll help her, and she believes him.

If you’re not a fan of Romantic Suspense/Mystery, there’s no need to worry about this one because the mystery about Scarlett’s husband’s death is solved maybe about 30% into the story, which was a bit of a surprise to me, to be honest, since the blurb gave me the impression the story will revolve around that. Not that I’m complaining, since I’m not the biggest suspense/mystery fan myself.

Most of the story is the smooth-sailing progress between Scarlett and Jaxon, and lots of steam from here on out, folks. Lots of hot sex between them now that the case is behind them. The two jumped into a relationship after Jaxon won her case, and they discover what it’s like to finally be with someone they care about and who cares about them just as much. The two have experienced hardships—Scarlett with her husband, Jaxon with the loss of his beloved sister—and found solace in each other.

Scarlett has suffered emotionally and eventually physically from the hands of her husband, a cop with more vices than some criminals, and it’s affected her more than she cared to admit. She fled the country and lived with her relative for a while, but had to come back when she was accused of killing him. I can only imagine what she felt throughout that ordeal. She started out as aloof and closed-off, but Jaxon helped her find the real Scarlett again, and now she can live life the way she wants to.

There’s some great chemistry between Scarlett and Jaxon, and a fabulous dynamic between Scarlett, Jaxon, and their friends. That’s what I loved the most—the realistic relationship and interactions between the characters. Scarlett barely had anyone at first, but she soon found friends in the unlikeliest of people. I also loved Jaxon’s relationship with one of the members of a gang, Demon.

If you’re looking for a story with low angst, a hint of suspense and mystery mixed in some pretty hot scenes between two strong characters, a great dynamic between friends, loyalty, love, and moving on, then you’ll enjoy Seducing the Defendant.

descriptionI enjoyed this one. It was one of those easy-peasy low angst types of reads. I thought the court case mystery would feature throughout the book, but it gets wrapped up in the first 30% and then we just get a lot of sex. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it also doesn't make for the most exciting of reads. That ending though, way to rip a girls heart out Miz Fernando. I think you may be on my sh!t list right now. ;D

Aside from that this one was a pleasant read. Well written and well paced. The plot although not the most exciting held my interest nonetheless. Like I said there is zero angst. There is a smidge of OW drama that quite frankly was pointless and could have been left out without changing the story in the least (SOOOO tired of this type of thing in romances lately). There was no OM drama. The sex scenes were hot and plentiful. The secondary characters were interesting and consisted mostly of other lawyers Jaxon worked with and Wind Dragons MC members.

description

Both main characters were extremely likable. Scarlett came off a bit weirdly at the beginning of this one. Very standoffish but then she morphed into this insecure introvert that slowly comes out of her shell with Jaxon. As I said, it was a bit odd. But I did end up liking her as a heroine. Jaxon was a great hero. Sweet. Sexy. Pretty much all in right from the start. Just a good solid hero. Lastly, it was all wrapped up in a bit of a bittersweet ending that this reader is going to pretend never happened...yup...that is what I am going to do...pretend...lalalalala.description

So this book was actually a 4 Star read for me for the majority of the story. I liked the characters and even though there were parts that seemed to move a little slow I actually really liked how their relationship was developed over time.

But that ending dropped my rating faster than a hot potato. I absolutely hated what happened and I honestly just didn't see the point of it. I'm sure a lot of readers will either not mind it or actually like, but for me it was one big Hell No. I had a lot of hopes for the ending actually so for them to be crushed so suddenly really saddened me. What happened I could maybe deal with if I understood what the point of it was, but since I can't it just ruined my liking of the story.

Overall, I can't say this is a favorite of mine from this author but it's not going to stop me from reading her books and I'm still looking forward to the next in this series.

DNF @ 30%

The characters are one-dimensional and the romance is doing nothing for me. Every interaction is coming off flat and emotionless to me.

The court case comes off unrealistic and unbelievable, and I just can't get past the ridiculousness.

Hero: Jaxon is a top notch criminal defense lawyer. Calm, loyal and hiding the pain of losing his sister, who he thinks about a lot in the story. He meets heroine when she requests him to defend her against murder charges. Jaxon’s character is an Alpha, but not over the top.

Heroine: Scarlett is a young, pretty heiress to Reyes Industries who is being accused of murdering her ex. She holds herself back due to an abusive relationship from her dead ex. She hides her looks and slowly transforms as she grows stronger under Jaxon’s influence. Typical abuse victim behavior coming into her own.

Attraction: Low to mid heat. Starts out slow due to Scarlett’s past and heats up towards the end.

Main Characters Behavior: Mature and fits character descriptions.

Safety: Brief thoughts and explanation of ex husbands abuse and mild violence with side character

Predictability: Predictable until the end. Surprise scene at the end that involves side characters.

Angst Level: Low to mid.

In the first part of this story, Jaxon is working with Scarlett to clear her from murder charges. He clears her name pretty quickly and then the story turns more into being all about Jaxon and Scarlett’s relationship. We see real character growth with Scarlett that becomes very entertaining. The story is well written. There wasn’t a whole lot of excitement until the second half of the book. The biggest thing I enjoyed was getting true quality time seeing these two as a couple.

A quick, solid read. Jaxon takes on Scarlett as a client and at first isn’t sure of her innocence. She gains his trust and they find out who is involved and why. For a seemingly complicated plot, it gets resolved pretty easily.

The hero and heroine were a good match and it was articulated well in their interactions. I enjoyed this read and it was safe to boot.

pretty good overall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have read many of this author’s books. I have enjoyed them all too. So I was excited to break into this new book.
I was happy to see some familiar names, especially a tie into the Wind Dragons and the first book, in this new series. I really loved Jaxson. So sweet and loving and his relationship with Scarlett is so special.
However, something is missing. I never felt that big connection. The passion was missing. For me, this book read just like a regular romance, with nothing grabbing me and sucking me in.
The story is great and I loved the plot. But there were a few places that the story just did not ring true. And areas that should be heartbreaking and leave me gasping for air, were just flat.
Did I miss something in this book? Did something change with the author’s writing style? I am not sure, but I really wanted to fall in love with this book. In many ways I did, but over all, it was good but not over the top. I hope she finds her mojo again for the next story in the series.
This is book 2 in the Conflict of Interest series.
The main character Jaxon Bentley was introduced in the first book. We know he took some time off and he's back and ready to work. His next case involves a widow Scarlett Reyes who has been accused of murdering her husband, who was a cop. Jaxon doesn't know if the woman is telling the truth but he's good at his job and he likes to win.
After deeper investigation, he realizes Darren was not a good man. He not only was cheating on Scarlett but he was a dirty cop. He's sure Scarlett is innocent but proving it's another matter.
Scarlett came back from Europe when she was accused of killing Darren. She's still trying to find herself after being abused by her husband for many years. She wishes she could make plans for her future but not knowing if she's going to remain free or if she's going to prison makes her put the brakes on her decisions, including sexy lawyers who make her heart beat faster.
It was easy to like Jaxon since I knew him from the first book. He was smart, resourceful and his connection to Demon gave him a shade of grey. Jaxon was ready to do whatever it took to keep Scarlett safe. Also, he helped her find herself and he gave her enough breathing space for her to make her own decision and choices.
Scarlett deserved happiness after so much unfairness. It was great seeing her develop a backbone and open up to Jaxon and then creating new connections and friendships. Those friendships were all so different but in a way, they made sense.
The best part was being able to see the characters from the Wind Dragons Motorcycle Club series popping in. Demon in particular. He was amazing!
There's a twist I didn't see coming. It was intense. I can tell you, I didn't agree with the choice Chantal Fernando made. Why did she do it?
Overall, Seducing the Defendant was another good addition to the Conflict of Interest series.
Seducing The Defendant is a story written by an author that is very new to me here. And I have to say that I was highly impressed with how this story was developled and the characters that became larger than life. I honestly wasn't sure how much I would like this one, since it was a spontateous acceptance of receiving this book in exchange for a review. However, I have to say that this sudden decision I am so glad for because I just found a new favorite author to devour and I can't wait to read book one, because if its anything like this story than I am sure that I will fall in love.
Seducing The Defendent begins with our hero Jaxson Bentley, who is an defense attourney accept a difficult case but will only make his name even more prestigious. He is known to win the hardest of cases and this new one will be a new step for him. But the moment he meets with his defendent, he knows that there is something fishy about her case. Not everything is adding up here. There is a great mystery and he wants to get to the bottom of it, especially when after getting to know his defendent, he realizes that this woman is sweet and gentle and doesn't deserve to spend time in prison for a crime she didn't commit and soon a strong and vibrant love story develops between Jaxson and Scarlett one that is full of various emotions that trasnfers to the reader.
What a powerful story, and one which I wasn't fully expecting here. I simply adored Jaxson and Scarlett. Jaxson is full of humor and intelligence (which is sexy in a hero). And I love how passionate he is about life but still has some vulnerabilities which makes him appear to be more human to this reader. Then we have our heroine, Scarlett. She is being accused of murdering her husband. But Scarlett is the last person who could ever do such a thing. She is sweet and kind, and so gentle. She has suffered abuse but still has a backbone of steel. I love her strength and seeing the way that being with Jaxson brings out the best in her. She really grows from being timid and afraid of her own shadow at first, to living her dreams and finding happiness and fulfillement in life. Its truly a wonderful change that we see in her.
The romance that builds between these two is simply powerful. At first its all just friends, because of the conflict of interest since Jaxson is her attourney. But then once we see them find the truth about who really killed her husband, then their romance simply beautifies even more. I love how they interact with one another here. Its simply not what you expect. They truly "get" each other and compliment each other in the every day ways. I fell in love with this couple so much and I would forget that these characters are merely fictional and not real....but this author has an amazing ability to make them come to life in a poignant way. Now there is one cliffhanger or more simply put a shocking outcome to one of the characters that I LOVED. Like really.....I wanted to tell the author WHY oh WHY do that? I don't want to spoil it, but its the one thing that made this book a four star instead of a five star read.
Overall Seducing The Defendent is a powerful packed romance that brings together a couple who helps each other fight battles, a vibrant love tale that introduces emotiona and reality to the reader......simply a joy to read!
This was an okay read. Plot was intersting, but I had some hard time connecting to the characters.
It had a lot of potential, but it just didn't really work for me.
Writing was on point, which is nothing new when it comes to Chantal Fernando.
She is a talented writer and I will definitely read more of her works in the future.
Seducing The Defendant is the second book in the Conflict of Interest series. I am loving this series. It may actually be my newest obsession in the book world.
Seducing The Defendant is Jaxon's story. Jaxon is a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, after taking a sabbatical due to a family emergency he comes back to work and finds his first case is of a woman being accused of murdering her husband. Given the details of the case he isn't quite sure if he wants to take it or not. He decides to meet the accused first and decide later.
For the past two years Scarlett has been hiding out in another country while tending to her sick aunt. When she is called back to the states for the murder of her husband, she decides to pull out the big guns and hire the best defense attorney in the country. She decides to hire Jaxon Bentley.
I loved Jaxon and Scarlett's story!
Jaxon is this sexy badass attorney inside the courtrooms but outside he's this sensitive guy just looking to ease the pain and guilt from his past. Then we have Scarlett who is this damaged woman who is slowly learning to trust in men and relationships again. With these two characters you'd think this novel would be filled with angst and emotional turmoil but it really isn't. This novel is all about love, all about moving on and getting over hurdles that life throws at you. And trust me when I say, some of these hurdles are monumental.
Along with this novel we get a glimpse into some pretty kick ass secondary characters. I am still loving the hell out of Tristan and Kat. I am also intrigued by this Hunter character, he has this playboy vibe going on but I have a feeling there is a story buried underneath that exterior.
The WDMC are one of my favorite MC's in the romance book world so imagine my excitement when I first read the blurb to Seducing The Defendant and found my favorite boys would be making a cameo appearance in this novel! I was beyond thrilled, I've missed these boys so damn much. It added an extra level of excitement to the novel for me. Just a FYI though if you haven't read Dirty Ride (WDMC #3.5) It's not necessary to read but this novel has a little something, something to do with that one. EEEK!
Being honest again, My heart broke around the ending. I can't go into detail because of spoilers but the events that took place completely obliterated my soul! I cannot believe that actually happened!! I wanted to jump through my kindle and hug Jaxon! This man has been through so much and to throw this at him along with everything else he was just starting to get over. F*CK!
Overall, It's no mystery how I felt about this novel! I loved everything about it, the passion, the mystery, and that touch of heartbreak. I cannot wait to continue on with The conflict of Interest series.
I enjoyed this, mostly. This is my first book by this author, and I did not read the first in the series, however this is really a standalone and you don't need to have read the 1st to follow the events in this story.
That said, the idea that she was his client was never really that prevalent for me, there was not a lot of explored attraction until after there was a resolution of the relationship and he was no longer acting as her attorney. I guess a relationship with a former attorney is a little forbidden, but it isn't what I was expecting for the book.
I also thought it was rushed in places and that made it a little difficult to follow as I thought some events were not given the time or the development that they needed in order to feel as pivotal for the story as they ended up being.
I did like it overall, and the relationship between Jaxon and Scarlett is interesting, I just felt that there needed to be more development in some areas for me to really be willing to invest in it.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has pain, suspense, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Breaching the Contract (Conflict of Interest #1)
This is Scarlett and Jaxon’s story. Scarlett is accused of murdering her husband who was a police office in cold blood. Jaxon is the criminal lawyer who is going to represent her. When all the evidence points to her being guilty he is wondering if she did it. When he meets her, he knows for sure she didn’t now he has to prove that she didn’t even with all the evidence pointing right at her. They must race against the clock and prove her innocence. The chemistry between these two is explosive. But if he can’t prove her innocence then she is about to go away forever. Can he solve the case? Or will she trust him only to have him lose her freedom?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I recommend this book.
Talk about ‘conflict of interest!’
How much more complicated can a possible relationship be than one that begins as a defendant and a defense lawyer?
That’s the situation that Jaxon Bentley and Scarlett Reyes finds themselves in
when Jaxon takes on Scarlett as his client and vows to prove her innocence even though all evidence points to her committing the crime.
Interestingly, the case against Scarlett is resolved fairly early in the story, which allows the plot line to focus on the growing attraction and the electric chemistry that exists between the hero and the heroine. And let me tell you…that connection translates into some seriously sultry and steamy scenes, proving that Jaxon and Scarlett are way more than attorney and defendant.
As Scarlett and Jaxon explore their feelings for one another, Scarlett opens up and goes from an aloof and cold person to a timid introvert to the woman she was meant to be before she lost herself at the hands of an abusive husband.
Jaxon is a hero who readers will adore. He’s a good guy all the way around, and he’s damn good at his job. He’s sweet and sexy, and he knows how to own a courtroom as well as the bedroom.
I’ll admit that it was a bit difficult to connect with Scarlett, partly because of how closed-off she is at the beginning of the story and partly because she remained a pretty one-dimensional character due to the short length of the book.
Seducing the Defendant is a steamy and light read that allows readers to reconnect with some of their favorites from Fernando’s Wind Dragons MC series as well as truly understand how the right kind of friends can make life and love so much better.
4 damaged, delicious and dirty stars for SEDUCING THE DEFENDANT!
When accused cop-killer Scarlett Reyes asks for top criminal defense attorney Jaxon Bentley's help, he's up for the challenge. Unsure about his client's innocence, Jax senses something about Scarlett that simply draws him in, despite his best efforts to stay away. A murder trial can't last forever, and Jax is certain he can prove Scarlett's innocence. They can make it without irreversibly crossing the line…right?
SEDUCING THE DEFENDANT is book 2 in the Conflict of Interest series, and is written by one of my favorite authors! I loved the way Ms. Fernando sewed together characters from this white collar series with the badass bikers and old ladies from her Wind Dragons MC series. I thought that was fun and really enhanced her whole written world. Speaking of fun, how hilarious was Scarlett's porn research scene?! I literally LOL'd at that one! There's nothing better than a well written, clever scene that you could totally picture yourself in! My only beef was the ending, it was completely different from the rest of the book, and I can't tell if it was a cliffhanger or just an abrupt case closed. I guess I'll have to wait until the next book to find out!
Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; no condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; violence/murder.
Seducing the Defendant is the second book in a series of standalones. It can be read with or without having read the first book.
This is the story of Scarlett and Jaxon. Jaxon is defending Scarlett when she is charged with murder. Scarlett came off as a bit shy and quiet at first. I loved watching her grow with Jaxon. Jaxon was a strong alpha, but not too overbearing. He was gentle when he needed to be.
Overall, I really enjoyed Seducing the Defendant. It was paced well, and held my attention. The characters are easy to connect with. If you are familiar with the authors work, there are some tie ins from previous works that pop up, which always excites me. I would recommend to the reader looking for a hot lawyer, and a heroine that grows beautifully during the story.
This is book two in the Conflict of Interest series.
Jaxson Bentley is a defence attorney who we met in book one Breaching the Contract. He loves a challenge and that’s exactly what he gets when he’s asked to defend Scarlett Reyes who is being accused of murdering her husband a police officer.
Although I read and enjoyed this story I didn’t click with the characters as much as I’d have liked. Even though this isn’t my favourite read by this author I’ll certainly be reading more from her in the future.
3.5 Stars
After reading the first book in the Conflict of Interest series, I knew that I wanted more! In Breaching the Contract, the romance was sweet and there were a few twists thrown in to keep the reader interested. Seducing the Defendant was different from the first book, as it was tied to a series also written by the author, and the romance was more intense as the couple worked together.
Jaxon was such a great guy! He took on Scarlett's case and did everything he could to help her get her life back. He had a few demons that he was still trying to deal with. I could also see his growing attraction for Scarlett, and I knew they'd be sizzling together.
Scarlett was determined to prove her innocence, and it was good for her to give that control to Jaxon. I felt sorry for her and the predicament that she found herself in, but it was good to see her grow into a stronger and independent woman.
Jaxon and Scarlett's attraction built while working on Scarlett's case, and boy were they hot together! They slowly let one another in and were able to face their demons together. Again, I felt that the story was rushed in a few places and would've liked some threads expanded on, or not wrapped up as quickly as what they were. It's not going to stop me from reading the next book in the series though! I'm loving the men at this firm!
Law and order meets MC madness in this second installment of the Conflict of Interest series.
We met Jaxon Bentley in the first book in the series, Breaching the Contract, but now we have him in all his heartbreaking, beautiful goodness.
And when he meets alleged murdered Scarlett, well things take a turn for the better in his life.
Whooo, the sexual tension between them if off the charts, and you can just feel the push/pull between them. Even though they are lawyer and client, you just need them to get together.
I won't lie though, I did have trouble connecting with Scarlett. I just didn't really get over the coldness of her character that we met at the beginning of the story. But that could just be me.
There are not enough words to explain my excitement when the Wind Dragons MC entered the story. I have missed them since their story ended, and it was great to get a few little glimpses into the club.
I really enjoyed Seducing The Defendant. I read it in one night, and now am impatient for what Ms Fernando brings us next.
I Voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book
I think this author will always be one of my favorites. Writing MC books and then some awesome Lawyer Romance... Sweet!
I loved Scarlett and Jaxon's story. Scarlett was accused of murdering her husband. A cop who was also an abusive drug addict. But nobody saw that part. And what's even worse is that while he was married to her he was having an affair with another women. A Women who now has ties to the Wind Dragon MC (Whoop)
From the moment he heard about Scarlett being accused Jaxon felt an attraction to her case. And when he met her he knew that he had to help her.
Two people one abused and the other broken in his own way, but together they can give each other what they both need.
Sweet, sexy, heart breaking and some parts that you seriously won't expect, but also so freaking good. I loved Scarlett. When you meet her she is a bit apprehensive of men but the more time she spends with Jaxon the more she becomes this strong women that knows exactly what she wants.
I can't wait for the next one... Hunter, he sounds like he can be a handful...
Seducing the Defendant was an exceptionally well written book; it held my attention right away from the beginning to end. This book will make you sit on the edge of your seat and fall in love with the characters. The characters were strong and determined but sexy all at the same time and Chantel Fernando did a phenomenal job.
Scarlett Reyes goes to Jaxon Bently's law firm, after she is released on bail to see if he will take her case; I love how there is an instant attraction towards each other. I thought it was risky how he had to go to his buddy Demon, who is part of the Wind Dragons MC, to help; definitely had me concerned!!
This is the second book in The Conflict Interest Series; it can be read as a standalone book. I look forward to reading more books by Chantel Fernando, I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.
The story starts with the delectable Jaxon Bentley, a criminal lawyer and certified work addict being asked to represent the cool, aloof Scarlett Reyes. A women being accused of murdering her police officer husband in cold blood. All the evidence is pointing at her, can Jaxon prove her innocence?. Or will that professional line get blurred?.
Our very handsome, broody hot alpha Jaxon Bentley most definitely ticked all my boxes. His very sudden departure from breaching the contract (Kat & Tristen's book) for sure had my interest peaked. I wanted to know all about him, the little introduction in the first book wasn't enough but it did give us an idea of his so personality. He was the sweet one of the two business men which showed when his kind, patient nature was replaced with Tristan's surly brooding rude one. Jaxon did not disappoint!, He starts off wary and sad but considering the circumstances that is perfectly understandable. Although he had that dominant gruff alpha side that we all love in our heroes, he was also extremely sweet, tentative, patient and kind. He was a perfect hero/book boyfriend to boot.
I wasn't sure what to expect from our leading lady giving that she gave off the don't fuck with me vibe in a cool almost detached like manner. Once I got a peak into her inner turmoil I quickly realised that my original impression couldn't be anymore further from the truth. She had walls build up around her but you can't expect anything less when she's had to deal with a shitty marriage to an absolute shithead of a husband who took pleasure in breaking her down until she was but a shell of herself. She was tired, tired of being abused, tired of fighting, tired of defending herself .. she just had enough of it all. When them walls came down and I got a peaked into personality I fell in love. She was the sweetest, caring, funny beautiful human. She drew people in like a moth to a flame. Collected friends from the most awkwardly hilarious situations. To top off all het great attributes she also had this innocence about her. That porn scene ... HILARIOUS. Seriously I about died laughing. On top of it being funny it was so freaking cute, relatable!. Just human.
I love a story that isn't filled with unnecessary drama. Not one part of this story felt like it was thrown in to fill a couple a pages but had no use for being there. It's more of a slow burn romance giving you all those feels. I enjoyed their pace it wasn't rushed it was believable. They got to know eachother while falling in love, while you get a better feel of them individually and together as characters. Their story isn't smooth sailing but it was believable and relatable. You have a little of everything from hilarious bantering to heartbreaking WTF moments!. crazy hot lovings and times where you want to throw the kindle. It's a mix of it all but written in a way that has you completely invested in there journey.
Demon stole some light though, that man! I love him.
"-I glance down at the magazine and scowl when all I see are pictures of half naked women."serious? Did you bring your own dirty magazine to the library?" "
"Are you calling naked women dirty, Scar? I like to think of it as an art form," he says, keeping his face straight. "I had no idea you were so judgemental."-"
also I love that we get to see old faces and that they play such important parts of the story. I'll never get board of hearing from the MC and all their lovely leading ladies. Chantal intergrated them seemlessly into the story.
So final thoughts.....
I loved it. I loved the almost forbidden elements she adds like a personal touch. The lawyer and his client, the MC hanging out with the lawyers. The great blend of personalities, all so different that it almost shouldn't work but it does perfectly. The hot build up that has sexual tension radiating out of the pages leaving you wanting, needing more. No disappointment, no random shit that doesn't make sense. Just a great story, a rollercoaster of emotions and a happy ending to boot. I loved it even when I was crying into the pages of my kindle.
Angels and Demons...
I'm a big fan of Chantal Fernando and her MC Romance books. When I read in the synopsis that the Wind Dragons MC were involved in this story I was very excited to read it. After reading the first book in the Conflict of Interest series, I had had already met and liked Jaxon. I was expecting a little office romance with a sexy-in-a-suit lawyer. I was totally not expecting what I got, which was so much more.
Yes, there was a bit of conflict of interest involved when Jaxon found himself attracted to his client, Scarlett. She wanted to hire him to represent her in a murder case where she's been accused of killing her husband who was a police officer. On paper, the evidence against her is pretty incriminating, but when he meets her face-to-face she convinces him of her innocence. She's a beautiful broken woman who touches his heartstrings, making it hard for him to refuse her. And he doesn't want to refuse her anything...
Scarlett is fighting for her life. She needs the best attorney her money can get her. After doing her research, she ends up in Jaxon Bentley's office. When he asks her if she would be willing to accept a plea bargain, she refuses. She swears she's innocent and wants him to save her. The last thing she expects is to be attracted to her attorney. But damn, he looks like a GQ model. She needs to be worried about her future, she doesn't look good in stripes.
As Jaxon digs deeper into her husbands past he finds more trouble than he anticipated. When he discovers ties to the Wind Dragons MC he's warned off, told to leave it alone. But he can't. Not when Scarlett is depending on him. Not when failing means she might end up behind bars. Not when she finally lets him in, sharing her secrets and her desire for him. He's got his hands full, and seducing the defendant is forbidden. Will he play by the rules, or will he play dirty?
Damn! This book was amazing and shocking. Full of passion and suspense. I was totally invested and on the edge of my seat as surprising events occurred and new players got involved. As more characters were introduced I got even more attached to the circle of friends and I'm really looking forward to what comes next. The line forms here...
Overall, I thought Seducing The Defendant was an ok read. I really loved the first 40 or so % of the book. I was really intrigued by the story-line and was excited to see how it was all going to play out. Scarlett was a really interesting character. All the evidence certainly painted a guilty picture, but my instincts kept telling me there has to be more to the story here….And while Jaxon was an amazing attorney, in fact the most sought after, he had his own demons to fight. But, if anyone could prove Scarlett’s innocence, it was Jaxon.
I really enjoyed unraveling the case against Scarlett and all the twists along the way. As a fan of the Wind Dragons MC Series, I enjoyed that connection/crossover into this series.
However, I did have some issues with this story. As I previously stated, I loved the first half of the story. However, once the case against Scarlett wrapped up, I sort of felt like the story began to drag. I didn’t know where the story could possibly go since the case took up so much of the story and was such an important part of it. Also, I enjoyed the slow build of Scarlett and Jaxon’s relationship, but I didn’t think we needed another 50% of their story after the case wrapped up. I know I’m probably not explaining it right, but I just feel like this story was too long when it didn’t need to be. Please don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy it, I just feel that it could have been wrapped up quickly-er then it was.
Overall, I think Seducing The Defendant is going to be one of those books that is going to be either hit or miss. For me, I thought it was an ok read, but definitely not my favorite in this series so far. I think this series has a lot of great potential, so despite this one not being an 100% hit for me, I will still continue on with this series to see who’s story will be told next.
Jaxon is a bad ass criminal defense attorney. He has recently lost his sister and has been stepping away from his job. However, Scarlett is now seeking his help. The police claim she killed her husband; she swears she didn't. Oh, and the husband? He was a cop.
Jaxon isn't sure that taking Scarlett's case is a good idea. But, something about her makes him feel like he HAS to take this case. As they begin to mount a defense for Scarlett, they discover that her husband had an entire life he was hiding from her. Scarlett knew he was a jerk (and abusive), but she is stunned at how much he hid from her!
With the twisted plot bringing in dirty cops and MC clubs, Fernando really keeps you guessing. Honestly, it seems totally possible that Scarlett will go to prison. It would be SO easy for the cops that her husband worked with to set her up. It wouldn't take much for them to manufacture evidence. Now, having said that, the plot with her accused of murder is pretty much solved by about 40% in. I was like, "Uh oh....what is going to happen now?". Seeing Scarlett and Jaxon's relationship progress was really endearing. Scarlett is embracing who she never got the chance to be, and Jaxon is opening up and accepting her in his life.
And the end....I never saw it coming. I kept waiting for 'the bad'. Everything was going so well and I just knew something would happen. But, I didn't expect THAT.
If you read Fernando's Wind Dragon series, you will love how much of a part they play in this story. If, like me, you haven't read the series, it won't affect your enjoyment of this book at all!
OMG! this book! loved it but giving 4.5 stars.
You know when your reading and you become completely drawn in by the characters, there's a feel good vibe and you can feel yourself being embraced in the plot like a big comfy blanket..... this is that book for me.
It starts off with Scarlett being accused of her dead husbands murder. A dirty cop who used to abuse his wife and the same night Scarlett leaves him he also disappears.
Scarlett is finally free from her husband living abroad with her aunt and is finally moving on but two years down the line her husband body is dragged out of water.
Jaxon is Scarletts lawyer and there's a lot of evidence against her.
For the brief encounter I had with Jaxon in the previous book I wanted more but he left the story suddenly due to a family issue.
In seducing the defendant you get to find out why.
This book isn't how I thought it would be and in a good way. The case is quickly over and the story concentrates on Scarlett getting her life together, making friends and Scarlett and Jaxon falling in love and the chemistry is sizzling.
I love all the extended characters there's friendships and humour, I particularly liked one character and was envisioning his book but then came a twist which saddened and shocked me.
I felt the story finished suddenly and there was no further mention of the sick aunt in France who Scarlett left behind, just closure things that rounds up a story and makes it complete lacked slightly.
I'm looking forward to more, I wanted to read Jaxons story after the last book and got it but now I'm stumped and wondering who Chantal will write next.
This is one of those books that is sweet and warm and you keep expecting something bad or some angst to happen and it doesent until bam it does and it leaves you jaw dropped.
Seducing the defendant is a heart warming and hot read with great characters and addictive plot.
Told in first person dual povs and leads to a hea.
Seducing The Defendant is the second book in the Conflict of Interest series. Seducing The Defendant is Jaxon's story and what a story it is. Jaxon is a hot-shot criminal defense attorney who has come back to work after being on a sabbatical due to a family emergency. His first case back is of a woman being accused of murdering her husband. After he hears the details of the case, he isn’t too sure he wants this case but decides to meet with the defendant first before making a judgement call.
Scarlett is back in town after hiding out in another country and caring for a sick relative. She gets told to come back and face murder charges—charges that she killed her husband. She does return and realizes she needs the best defense attorney to represent her and clear her of the charges so she goes and hires her the best-and that is Jaxon Bentley.
This is a story that will have you glued from start to finish. The sexual tension between Jaxon and Scarlett is intense, it’s amazing and the push/pull between them is something you can literally feel. Knowing that they are attorney and client doesn’t mean a thing to me, it just has me rooting even harder for them to get together. On top of the romance, we have a murder mystery and it was fantastic to see a re-appearance of the Wind Dragons MC in the story – Scarlett has ties to the Wind Dragons and it was great to see them in this story and to learn of Scarlett and her ties with them and what they have to do with this story. There are so many things happening in this story- things that will have you going thru a range of emotions. You have action packed, dangerous, fun, sexy, heartbreaking and passionate all teaming for top billing of emotions in this story—Scarlett and Jaxon make a great couple and it was sad when their story came to an end….but I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
My Rating: 4.5 stars *****
