When Frank Reynolds is murdered while staying at the Nook, he reappears in ghostly form seeking help from Mattie Tucker.
Millers Cove is no ordinary town.. firstly, it has a concentrated population of paranormals. Secondly, they have a tourist theme, to keep the town financially stable, and the whole place operates as if it was still the 1940's.
Mattie is a witch with powers to see and speak to ghosts and solve clues going against her families usual traits of horology, Mattie has a few wonky powers, and her time keeping isn't great. She's set herself up as a private detective and has had a few run-ins with the local vampire detective Press, including inadvertently burning him with an EMF overload set off a sunbed, so she's more than a little surprised that he asks her to join the investigation into Frank's death.
Nice start to a new series, likeable compelling characters. Can't wait to read the next one.
I just hope that we will still get more Jinx Hamilton novels.
I enjoy the Jinx Hamilton series, so I was looking forward to reading a new series by this author. I was not disappointed.
Mattie is a witch who lives in a themed town (Think Nocturne Falls, by Kristen Painter). The theme of this town is 1940s, and they take it very seriously, even to living mostly without tech developed prior to that decade. The theme is to bring in tourists, which they have to balance carefully with the fact that most of the town is a paranormal of some sort.
When a ghost shows up outside of her business, asking her help to protect his wife from whoever murdered him, she agrees. Even though it means once again tangling with the very hot vampire she recently set on fire. Accidentally.
This was a pretty entertaining story, with an entertaining cast of characters, and a pretty great little town. If you're looking for a fun and entertaining paranormal cozy, it's worth the read.
As cozy mysteries go, this one is well above the rest. The plot is interesting and engaging, and would be quite readable even without the paranormal angle. The characters are well drawn, not deep, but they don't have to be in this novel. There's no sappy love story gumming up the works, which for me is a real plus. That's not to say there's no romance, but it's not central to the story. I read "Corpse On The Set" first and liked it so much, I grabbed this first in the series along with the third. I hope to get more Mattie Tucker mysteries soon.
I have read ALL of Ms Harper's books so a new series is wonderful! And what a beginning. Her writing style is so natural and relaxed but holds every inch of your attention without any apparent effort. New paranormal entities that I have not heard of before makes this so refreshing. So two further books already available to pre-order takes care of the anxiety level usually felt when needing the next 'fix'. Many thanks!
This is one I wanted to just keep reading. Millers Cove is a unique small town, not just because it seems stuck in the past and everyone is good with that but because of all the paranormal and magical creatures. Great characters, colorful places and events. It's worth the time, enjoy!
I like Mattie. She's clever and strong. The town where she lives is quaint. A vampire detective. werewolf mayor, and other supernatural beings reside in the Miller's Cove. The mystery held my interest and kept me guessing. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I love this new series by Juliette Harper! Fun, quirky, town and characters, nostalgia, witches, weres, vampires and mysteries needing resolution! A little romance on the side ;)
A cute paranormal murder mystery romance with quirky characters with sass and spunky side characters. An enjoyable who done it with a 1930/ 1940’s life style fantasy with out sex that’s fun to read 💃🏻❣️
Reading this book was so much fun. I couldn't wait to get back to it when I got all my real life stuff out of the way . Thanks Juliette, as much as I love Jinx, this lot is fast becoming my new favourite.
Fairies, Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, and more make up a very cozy mystery. Two murders and a credit card scam keep the town vampire sheriff and the PI witch very busy. A very enjoyable read...
Harper gives the traditional detective story a fun, entertaining spin with her quirky characters. Good, fun read. Recommend without reservation if you like traditional detective yarns.
