... The then meets the now and the future.

This is a completely captivating book. Two woven love stories set on the past and the present, and was told through two different point of views, Emma and Amelia. It was a truly special story seasoned with exceptional characters and the extraordinary lives they have led.

Note: This is a contemporary romance.

“Love is stronger than hate,”

It all started with an old diary hidden under the bed. Amelia was dying and she trusted her granddaughter, Emma, to keep her untold past. Through Amelia's words, we were brought back on January of 1942. It was the year the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia, where 17 years old Amelia once lived. It was also the year when she met a young German soldier named Charlie who changed her life forever.

"I knew I would never be the same again, but at least I could rest knowing there was one good man amongst so many terrible ones. Humanity was not entirely lost."

Historical. A forbidden love story between a German soldier and a Jew.

Words are not enough to express how their story made me feel. Charlie and Amelia means everything to me. Charlie was an amazing young man. A real hero. To try to follow the things he did for Amelia required the bravest of hearts. I'm gladly taking my hat off for the things he worked out to survive the love they had for each other. Fiction or not, people like Charlie and Amelia, who fought hard for someone they truly love earns my great respect.

"Sometimes, even the toughest warriors who survive the odds and somehow escape the shadows of death, can still fall helpless and weak at the mercy of love."

Contemporary. A love story between a cardiologist and a designer.

What to say? Not only Charlie and Amelia stole the spotlight, but Jackson and Emma shined the brightest as well. They were absolutely adorable together. They weren't perfect. They were humans with flaws. They were someone who both went through bad relationships. But with each other on their sides, they learned how to be the best versions of themselves.

Overall, I extremely loved the book. It was equally tragic and charming and hopeful and full of love. It was angsty and heartbreaking and simply all the emotions. But in the end, it was all worth it. I am so glad I took a chance on this story because it is something that will stay with me for a long time. I urge everyone to also give this one a try.

Charlie:

“I fought to stay alive so I could come back for you. My eyes were opened to the destruction this world is living through, and I couldn’t leave you here alone.”

Jackson:

“I’ve always been under the impression that the bond between two people is something that grows over time, but I’ve been wrong. I think it all starts with a connection and grows into something more than I can comprehend at this moment.”

Trigger Warning: Vivid depiction of everything regarding war.

LAST WORDS: is a contemporary romance standalone novel by Shari J. Ryan where non fiction meets fiction, and the lines in between are blurred by forbidden love.
The book has dual plot lines which transition from Amelia’s life written in diary format which follows her from her captivity in 1942 within the confines of a nazi prison camp to present day surrounding her granddaughter Emma.

Thirty one year old Emma is a freelance designer, in a relationship neither her mother or grandmother approve of. But a little bit of meddling from her Grams sees her finally ending her relationship and walking down a whole new path, to a man that is right for her.

Emma's grandmother has lived 92 years on this earth (It's seventy-four years longer than I expected to live) but her health is deteriorating and is hospitalized, in a confused state she starts calling out for a man named Charlie Crane, who no one has heard of before. Amelia begs Emma to look for her special book which she discovers in a small wooden box hidden under her Grams bed. It's then that Emma is given the greatest gift of all time of reading her grandma's most treasured diary. A race against time to uncover who Charlie actually was to her Grandmother ensues.

We know little of Gram's history, mainly just that she survived the Holocaust. But her story stopped there.

Once upon a time… Amelia had the best childhood growing up within a loving family, two doting parents and an older brother , life was for the living, until that was all taken away in the blink of an eye, Nazi intruders take to the streets going from house to house removing patrons, in this case it was Amelia, her brother and father, her mother was killed right in front of her eyes.

Thrown onto a train packed to the rafters to a destination unknown, upon arrival men and boys one way woman and children the other.

An unlikely forbidden friendship between a Nazi soldier and Amelia ensues, he offers her what little scraps of food he can share, protection when he can, kind words when he's able to. A relationship blossoms within the dark confines of a prison camp.

We're a secret that no one would understand or accept.

Survival of the fittest, the toughest ensues. Amelia wrote down all her memories in a diary but never uttered a word to her children or granddaughter about her early life. It was a forbidden topic never to be spoken about.

MY THOUGHTS: I struggled writing up this review, gathering my thoughts trying to hone into my feelings won't do justice to every emotion I felt whilst reading this.
Powerful, Passionate and Perfectly Perfect.
This book took me on such a profound unexpected heartfelt journey, not being an overly emotional person this book hit me right in the feels, I cried, I sighed, I struggled to read some parts, I wanted to crawl into the book and hug Amelia, what an amazing, strong, character, I loved her story, and I loved Emma's journey alongside hers. This book will always lay claim to a part of my heart, I am so glad I read this story, what amazing journey I went on reading this.

It was Prague in 1942 when Amelia and Jakob, plus their parents, were captured by the SS. Amelia became separated from her father and brother, while the crammed conditions in the train made it hard to breathe. A pregnant woman beside her, Leah, was the only friendly face in the nightmare they all faced as they journeyed to Theresienstadt concentration camp, where life would continue to worsen, death was a regular occurrence, and the Nazis were brutal and cruel. One soldier, as it turned out, a reluctant Nazi, befriended Amelia, giving her pieces of food as everyone around her became emaciated.

Current day and Emma was beside her ninety two year old grandmother when she had her stroke, calling the ambulance and getting her to hospital in time for her to have surgery. Grams continued to ask for Charlie and when she wanted Emma to find the book, and find Charlie, Emma did her best. The discovery under Grams’ bed of a box which held a diary, led to the uncovering of long held secrets, and as Emma read the diary, Grams’ past emerged…

The Girl with the Diary by Shari J. Ryan is the first in the Last Words series and I enjoyed it very much, especially the historical aspect in Prague. There were not many Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, and with each and every book I read on the subject, I can see why. I felt there was a little too much focus on the romance side of the current day with Emma, but the diary’s contents more than made up for it. Recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

3 stars lots of potential! I liked it very much and the forbidden love aspect was a big plus. However I felt the book had more to say than what the author gave us. The romance was strong, the writing was good. It kept me interested.

In short:

One of my all-time favorite books!

***SPOILER-FREE REVIEW***

"Amelia, you are all that's worth fighting for."

This book is what I'd call a dementor - soul sucking the shit out of you, and just like all those wizards and witches in Harry Potter, I did nothing to stop it. I laid there bearing my soul and embraced the feels, the heart clenching moments, the tears, breaking my heart in the process. Because this story was just wow... unforgettable... poignant... brilliant... it left me speechless! There's so much I want to say about it and how it touched my mind, heart, and soul.

Have you ever read a blurb that gives you goosebumps and makes your eyes watery? You're scared to read it because you know you will ugly cry? But you're addicted from the start and can't stop reading even when your tears are flowing down your cheeks non-stop? To the point where your heart is clenching and you feel it stop in some parts because it is so heartbreaking to read? You fall in love with all of the characters page after page? Have a knot down your throat because you are not sure how it will end? This book had me feeling like this and so much more. I knew that this unique storyline would stay in my heart forever after only a few chapters in.

I read this book yesterday, but I couldn't write a review that would give justice to this masterpiece. In all my years of knowing about the holocaust, the thought of a Nazi soldier and a Jew falling love never crossed my mind, so I was definitely intrigued. When I read that this was somewhat based on the author's grandma's holocaust story, it had my heart breaking even more.

I won't go into the plot because this book needs to be experienced and please keep in mind that although you will need tissues, the story has a HEA. That had me so happy like you have no idea! I wasn't sure I would survive if it wasn't.

Amelia's POV was raw and unapologetically blunt; her forbidden love story with Charlie Crane had me rooting so hard for them. They prove that love is stronger than hate. It's not defined by religion, race, ethnicity, or the color of your skin. The second chance to be with her one true love made the migraine I had worth it. I felt emotionally and physically drained.

"Her story is altering my entire view of the world. I won't ever look at life the same way again."

What made it easier to read was Emma's POV and her second chance at love with Dr. Jackson Beck. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect with this story, but aside from the tears, some parts had me laughing and swooning so hard for Charlie and Beck.

I am in awe of Shari J. Ryan and how perfectly she captivated us with her words, this love story in a time full of war, evil and hate. It was my first book by her, but it certainly won't be my last. I plan to devour and binge on all of her books soon! I can honestly say that this is one of the best books ever written and a must read of 2017! Now how the hell do I move on?!

It's been a few week's since I finished Last Words and I'm still trying to find my words on this EPIC read.

Shari says this is where Non-Fiction and Fiction gather up and blur the lines of forbidden love- she wasn't lying on that.

My heart stopped at times throughout the chapters. It was a drug that I couldn't put down. I needed more... I had to know not only Emma's story but Amelia's. The bond, the connection, the twist, the love, the hurt- it all flowed into one great masterpiece.

By far the best read of 2017... You won't be disappointed in Last Words. It'll remind you to never forget the words and the past that you have/had. To share them, embrace them, and even at the end of the day, you can always find love.

This book... I'm still at a loss for words. Such a beautiful, powerful, and emotional story. I received this book as a beta reader, and I am happy to say this is the first time I won't need to get an ARC after changes have been made. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!

Shari really out did herself. I can not wait for this to be released so others can read it.

“This may be cliché, but I’m going to start my story with a once upon a time…except my life hasn’t been a fairytale - far from it. In fact, for a long time, I believed a happy ending meant death.”

The Holocaust left its mark as one of the darkest moments in history. Who could comprehend that in a place such as Terezin (Theresienstadt), a place so full of death, pain and sadism, an emotion as pure as love could exist?

The 2017 timeline opens when Emma Hill’s 92-year-old grandma, Amelia, is taken into hospital with a heart condition; it opens up doors to her secret past and healing that no doctor could ever achieve. Amelia calls out for Charlie Crane as she awaits cardiac surgery, prompting her granddaughter to find out who this man is and how her grandma knows him. Amelia points her to a hidden diary and encourages her to read it.

Readers journey back to January 1942 when the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia and Amelia is taken to the concentration camp 30 miles north of her home city, Prague. It’s here that she meets a guard and falls in love. The author explores the unwavering hope, the insurmountable odds, and the immeasurable loss experienced by a 17-year-old girl who survived the most demoralizing and destructive 5 years the world has ever seen. Don’t forget to grab a box of Kleenex! Ryan writes to place readers alongside her characters, so be prepared for an emotional response.

Readers get a twofer in this first book of Ryan’s trilogy - two romances within one story. Both timelines are equally good and compelling. Both romances are wonderful and a welcome reprieve from the sadness and horror. You’ll have to read about feisty Amelia who, from her hospital bed, single-handedly arranges her granddaughter’s happiness. After 74 years apart, is it too late for Amelia and Charlie? What about Emma and Jackson?

Ryan is one of the best Holocaust fiction authors! This story about Amelia, anzahl 24225, is a heartwrenching tribute honouring the survivors of the Holocaust. Ryan explores their bravery and redemption through an emotional love story. I can’t wait for book two!

I was gifted this advance copy by Shari J. Ryan, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

***EARLY READER***
You know the feeling when you just don't know what to do with yourself because of all sorts of heavy stuff are about to burst in your heart? Well, this is me right now. When Shari first contacted me, I was thrilled to meet a Jewish author from the states that wants to keep the memory alive. But now - after finishing her book - I feel so grateful and fortunate for the chance that I been given.
For as long as I can remember, I grew up with the stories about the Holocaust. We learned about it at school, met up with survivors, and having one day a year that is dedicated to all the 6 millions who lost their lives in that awful war. Being a Jew who was born and raised in Israel, it's kind of a given, being so attached to their stories. Reading Last Words was like another wake up call of how fortunate we are to be living in this world. Without all those people who fought for their rights to be Jews, I don't think any of us would exist.
This book is everything. Maybe because I'm a Jew it had an extra influence on me. This is a story about surviving against all odds, loving against all odds, finding happiness in the middle of hell and maybe, just maybe a little bit of hope.
The way it was written with the now and then's events made me sit on the edge of my seat waiting for what comes next. You can totally feel the heart and the soul of Shari being brought to us on a silver plate.
Amelia and Charlie's story will stay with me forever, that's for sure.
A little about the plot:
After having a stroke,  91 year old, Ameila, asks her granddaughter, Emma, to find her journal and bring it to her hospital bed. She has secrets, lots of them, and she wants Emma to be the only one who knows them. While a heart failure is threatening her life, she tries to help her granddaughter find happiness and strength through her personal story. She never shared anything about her life during the war, never shed a tear about the torture she had witnessed in those camps, but now she needs Emma to know everything - even the things that could change her family’s lives. This book takes place in 1942-1945 and 2017. The life changing events the characters lived through will make you leave everything behind and just keep reading. This is by far one of my favorites reads of all times. Even though it fiction written with the inspiration of non-fiction, every word in that book felt very much real - the good ones and definitely the bad.
Thank you, Shari, for this book, for your words, for everything your grandmother shared with us. May her memory, and all the 6 millions who died out there, be blessed forever.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Last Words is probably going to be a very different book than anything you have read in a good long while. Last Words if told though the journals of Emma's grandmother who lived thought the Holocaust and has hidden this journal from her entire family until she is convinced she is dying and can't be saved. In the hospital, very confused and surrounded by her family she keeps asking for Charlie but no one knows who Charlie is. Emma is tasked with finding her grandmother and reading her journal to her. Though the reading of this journal to Amelia Emma learns things she never ever knew about her grandmother. Her grandmother never told her family any of the things that she had gone through nor that she had been in love with a Nazi soldier named Charlie. Hence Emma along with her grandmother and her doctor Jackson Beck discover a world that is so earth shattering that it changes their lives and loves forever.

Last Words is not just a book. It is a journey that will, and I promise it will, change your heart in ways you will never expect. I have read every single book that Shari Ryan has ever written and loved them. This however is her best book to date. Last Words is so different from anything else she has ever written and I have to say it is probably my favorite read of 2017. There is no way you will read Last Words and come out on the other side the same way that you went in. I could read this book a million times and I'm sure discover something new every time I open it. You will probably want a kleenex nearby at times and I had to lay it down and take a break several times it got so intense. Don't you dare not go back to it though or you will be missing out on something amazing. Something you have never experienced before and I will warn you the After Word will leave you with big fat tears sliding down your face.

To the author that broke my soul. You Shari J Ryan have somehow crawled inside my soul with your words and cracked it. Thank you for that.

I was so nervous to read this story because I knew the outcome would be the same. However, this author has given me so much enjoyment that I had to give it a,real chance. That real chance kept me up until 6 am in the morning crying. Happy tears. The words and characters are so authentic and genuine that I felt like I was right there living it. It takes a phenomenal artist with a natural craft to reach the heights that Mrs. Ryan did. Thank you for sharing your beautiful craft with the rest of the reader nation. Once in a blue moon an author comes along who gives you a piece of her heart and soul through her work. Last Words by Shari J. Ryan was that book for me. It wasn't just another book to read but a journey of love, immeasurable loss and unwavering hope. Amelia's story will break your heart but also lift your spirits. Her granddaughter Emma was given the gift of reading her grandma's sacred written words tucked away in a journal for years. Amelia's story is hard to hear but it must be heard. Amelia is a fighter, a survivor who lived through conditions that no person on this earth should ever have to go through. Reading Last Words will open your eyes and your heart. The three generations of women in this story will make you cry, laugh and smile. Five shining stars Shari Ryan.

Thank you for the honour of beta reading Last Words.

This review is for “Last Words,” by Shari J. Ryan

Disclaimer: I am Shari's BIGGEST fan. But I am also, as I've said before, above all-- honest; if I didn't like it, I wouldn't give it a five-star review just because, or say as much about it as I am about to say. Hope you're ready...

First, let me just say that I am not sure Mrs. Ryan is capable of writing ANYTHING LESS than a 5-star story. Granted, I haven't read ALL of her books and novellas (yet), but her writing style, no matter the genre/sub-genre, is nothing short of Poetic Genius. Time & again, she proves to me that I can LOVE a story outside of my normal type of story-type picks. How? Okay, my first guess is that she is some kind of Time/Space Magician, and is just writing down events EXACTLY as she witnesses them in a parallel universe, where words flow deliciously like melted butter and descriptions and characters are intensely real and vibrantly vivid, more-so than the normal 2D ones we see here on paper-- on Earth.

BUT, I've been known to have some outlandish theories before, so I'll posit my 2nd guess on how Shari thoroughly convinces me of her worth as a Master Storyteller and leaves my heart and mind aching with desire to read more... Um, I kind of touched on it earlier... It's her writing style. I honestly cannot get over how intoxicating (it) is. In the space of just a few hours, I devoured her latest gift to the Literary World, Last Words; a novel with clear and definitive dual storylines and POV, forbidden love, unexpected joys, gut-wrenching and unfortunately realistic tragedies, and the kind of serendipitous conclusions that only happen in real life, where life is stranger and better than fiction.

Without giving too much away, here is a breakdown of what I think about Last Words, and why I'd rate it 5+ stars if I could.

Plot: Okay, so, the book has dual plotlines, alternating easily via every chapter. One storyline follows Amelia's life after capture and subsequent imprisonment in a Nazi-run prison camp during WWII. This part of the story is told via a diary(that btw, reads like a current story/as-it-happens, instead of the typical “Dear Diary” format) that Amelia has kept secret for seventy-four years from her family, including her granddaughter, Emma, whose own present-day story unfolds, as she is asked by her grandmother to read and finally learn the pain she (Amelia) has been burdened by for so long, alone. The premise of confessing your secrets while believing to be on your deathbed, is a familiar occurrence, as is the effect that learning truths and keeping those family secrets—secret, have on the perspectives of the receiver of such precious knowledge. There are no plot holes, outrageous twists, nor unnecessary deus ex machinas used to move the story along, or lead to an HEA. This book reads just as a real-life account of love, hardship, extreme pain and loss, and misguided decisions of selflessness-- should read.

Characters: Hmm, I really DON'T want to give the story away, so let me try my best to say it simply-- Amelia and Emma are REAL PEOPLE(aren't they?), as are the other supporting characters and cast members. Fully fleshed-out, with distinct voices... their story(ies) pull you in and are not easily forgotten. These people come alive and it feels as if you're watching a documentary or live Reality TV. Real. Believable. That's the kind of characters you find in an SJR book.

The Writing: Yes, I know I've touched on this- quite a bit... BUT, let's go a step further... Mrs. Ryan's prose is spellbinding and bewitching. (It) is easy to read, while being far from basic. Her words are quotable and inspiring, and thought-provoking. From the very first pages, I was drawn in-- sucked in-- possessed.

In Case You Wanted to Know: There is violence, somewhat graphically described, that was, sadly, “typical” of concentration camps during WWII/the Holocaust. There is no detailed or implied rape; mentions of it happening within the camp-yes, but none occurs within the story. I do not recall any foul language. Yes, there is sex in this novel, but in typical SJR fashion, it is tastefully described, not overly explained, and NOT the main part of the story, nor is it a recurring theme... We're talking 3 occasions that consist of maybe two paragraphs each...

Overall: Yes, I read this book prior to its release. No, I did not have to give a review unless I wanted to-- but of course, as usual, I wanted to! Overall, this story does not disappoint. Shari did her research, listened to her relatives and to her heart, and wrote a masterpiece that feels like it REALLY DID HAPPEN. A completely plausible war-love-story, that moves the reader (um, myself AND (MC)grand-daughter, Emma) to live more-- want more-- believe in more. Think of Bastian in The Neverending Story, or Harry Potter gazing into the Pensieve-- You will be pulled in and your heart will be forever changed.

So I'll be completely honest. I have a couple books by Shari Ryan on my kindle but I haven't read any yet..... until this one! And now I'm thinking why the heck haven't I read more?!? This book, I just, it was, I'm speechless. Seriously. I need a minute to put into words what this book has made me feel and think....

This story has two of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read, yes two! The story of Emma and Jackson but also Amelia and Charlie. You're in for an adventure of a lifetime that's for sure!! I'll be honest, I don't always like books that flip back and forth in time. But this one? I found myself saying just one more chapter every time I finished one. I couldn't wait for either story to play out. I just, seriously you have to read to understand!!

Emma and Amelia, granddaughter and grandmother. And boy are these two more alike then you would think. Sweet, sassy, full of life, loving, and just amazing! Emma's mom Clara and her aunt Annie have a handful with their lovely but amazing family!!

Jackson and Charlie, a handsome doctor who captures Emma's heart from the very beginning because of his goodness and kindness and just his overall sweet and amazing demeanor! And Charlie, one of the bravest men I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. And one of the most honorable and just amazing man. These two men are the perfect men for our girls!

Now one more thing, this book is not for the faint of heart. There were times where I wanted to sob with what I was reading. You'll know why. But if I learned anything while I was reading there were some pretty amazing people in this world. People whose strength I can only imagine and wish to be half as strong as them. You'll read about one in the afterword, and cue my tears because I don't even know her but she's impacted me in ways because of this book.

You'll laugh, you'll love, and you will definitely cry. But you won't want to put this book down. It's one of a kind and one I will hold near and dear to my heart! ❤️

In a genre flooded with similar storylines, Last Words sets itself apart from the masses with a taboo, second chance love story like nothing I've ever read before. It is a riveting story about loss, resilience and hope. We get not one, but two love stories in Last Words through two different POV's, Amelia's story takes place in the past and Emma's chapters are in the present. Amelia's story in was difficult to read at times while we learned of the horrors she endured during WWII. But I was riveted by her story and couldn't wait to get back to her POV while I was reading Emma's chapters in the present. I loved how the story came full circle. I highly recommend Last Words if you are looking for something different, take a chance on this story! You won't regret it.

I received the ARC in exchange for a honest review.

I love stories about the Holocaust and this one was the best I've ever read! This is a love story of the truest kind. It goes back and forth from Amelia's point of view to Emma's as we find out Amelia's journey to America. It brought tears to my eyes as I'm Jewish so I could totally relate. I cried throughout the whole thing and I was addicted. I read halfway into the night and finished it today. This is a story you'll definitely need a box of tissues for. One of my all time favorite reads this year! My hat's off to you Shari.

This book was something a little different than what I have been used to with Shari Ryan's books and I will admit I was a little hesitant to read it, not knowing what to expect and if it would be something I would enjoy. Having said that, I know that I will never do the review of this book justice. This book was something truly special, starting from the moment I picked it up. I knew early on that this book would be powerful, profound, and probably cause some tears to fall (and in this I was definitely not mistaken).

There is immense beauty throughout this book that tells a story within a story. The circumstances surrouding Amelia's life and struggles are completely devastating and horrific, and within all of that, her heart survived, and she found everlasting love. Amelia's strength is commendable and inspirational. Despite the horrific historical events that are discussed throughout this book, two people were able to not only survive, but rise above. Despite the lack of humanity at the time, they were both selfless, wanting to protect others.

I loved the way this story was told and how the information was brought to light throughout the book. Shari Ryan has seriously outdone herself with Last Words. It was beautiful watching Emma discover her grandmother's secret, while at the same time finding herself in a situation that would now allow her some of the love she so clearly needed and deserved. The relationship between Emma and her grandmother was something I don't think you see a lot of nowadays.

Love can be challenging and trying and messy, but it is also beautiful and powerful and healing. This book is a true reminder that if you are lucky enough to be someone who finds a love so deep that it makes you whole, that you should never ever let go. Last Words is a brilliant, 5++++ star read!

The first book of 2022 for me to read a love story. It is probably one of the best ever I ever read. If are into a romance reading, this book may be for you. A modern day romance. Likewise I said before, I have mentioned, I recently read the book was called “Unspoken Words” by the same author, Shari. J. Ryan. It was a Charlie, a German soldier story. Today I finally got to read “Last Words” by Shari. J. Ryan, it goes back and forth from Amelia’s story when Emma, her granddaughter. Amelia told Emma to read her diary to find Charlie, as we find out Amelia’s story. Amelia raises from a loving Jewish family until her world turned upside down when she was 17 years old her family throw out of their home and was forced to go on a cattle for Theresienstadt (Terezin) she was separated from her family. She has to be strong, alone in orders to survive. On the inside she meets a Nazi solider named Charlie, who befriends her. He brings her extra food and makes sure she is strong enough to make it. The present day Amelia went into hospital, we learned to see a blooming love story between Emma and Jackson Beck, who is Amelia’s cardiologist, where the story is more fun and flirty that’s when Amelia involves their story. I must say Shari did an incredible and beautiful written book which is an epic story, although some of the parts are fiction, her storytelling of the horrific events of the Holocaust is unfortunately too real. Her writing was descriptive and made your heart break remembering what so many endured.

Wow, just wow! This book was amazing, it truly was an emotional, powerful, heart wrenching but beautiful read. The non-fiction part is really heartbreaking to read at times, but it's a story that needs to be told and never forgotten. The fiction part is beautifully written, I loved Emma, I was so pleased she left her bad relationship behind and gave Jackson a chance ( with a little help from Amelia!) I, like Jackson, couldn't wait to read more from Amelia's diary. I really felt as if I was there with her, I ugly cried at times but there was also a little humour that made me giggle! Charlie, what an amazing man he was, I'm pleased he got his ending with Amelia, just wished it had been sooner. This really is one of the best books I've read this year, at times I was left speechless, the author truly put her heart and soul into the story. If you only read one book this year, please make it this one, you won't be disappointed, I wish I could give it more than 5*.

There is absolutely no amount of amazing words I could possibly use, in any language, to describe Shari Ryan's new release Last Words and still do this deeply moving, thought provoking love story justice.

Last Words moved me to the brink of tears, cultivated fear and burned deep in my heart with the our pouring of love it provoked.

Ryan's story was an unexpected one in Nazi German times. Two souls finding love in the most tragic of places. Ryan poured every stitch of her heritage into this emotional novel. By doing so, she has written her best novel to date.

Last Words is one of those books you must absolutely read for yourself to feel the strength and emotion crafted by Ryan. Last Words is special, a different story of love demanding to readers to be read. Don't miss out on this opportunity to read something that'll change your perception of true love.

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would. It was such a touching story that was also based on true history. It approached a subject that many authors wouldn’t write about, the Holocaust, and made it a story with heart. I especially appreciated the way the story seamlessly flowed between current time and the past by using a journal. I think it adequately gave insight into what happened in that horrible part of history, but there was also a deeper, more hopeful message. Even in a time of great darkness, love and general care for others will always exist. While many suffered the pain of their own torture or the torture of loved ones, the survivors still had love in their hearts. I think this is a valuable message, especially in our world today.

5+ Never Ending Love Stars

Wow! This was a hauntingly beautiful story—one I know I’ll never forget.
The Notebook kind of good, and I don’t make that comparison lightly!

This book was written in a way I don’t see often; it was like getting two different love stories in one.

The first story is more of a slow burn, due to unavoidable circumstances. It takes place in unimaginable conditions, and during the worst of circumstances! It depicts love in its most precious and rarest form, full of loyalty and sacrifice. As unlikely to imagine a Nazi soldier, Charlie—falls in love with a Jewish girl—Amelia, that’s held in concentration camp captivity. She falls in love closely behind him, and their story turns into one of survival and struggle, to get to the other side of their living hell. That alone should give you chills.

The second story is about Amelia’s granddaughter, Emma, and her journey to help her grandmother find a missing piece of her heart. Along the way Emma finds love in an unlikely place, and person, as well.

This is the kind of book I honestly feel, I could recommend to just about anyone. You’ll find little to none expletives, no explicit sex scenes, and the rawest forms of love and devotion, depicted in its pages. *A must read!

Last Words is an emotional novel. I knew it would be before I turned to the first page, and throughout this intricately woven story, author Shari Ryan plucked at my heartstrings while skillfully urging me to read on. Once I began reading, I had to know how the book was going to end. From start to finish, this book was absolutely riveting.

I found this tale to be surprisingly personal, especially the parts of the story narrated by Emma Hill. Emma comes from a strong family of women who support and care for one another. She is close to her aging but willful grandmother Amelia, and when Amelia suffers a heart attack, Emma, her mother and her aunt rally together at Amelia’s hospital bedside. I found parallels between Emma’s relationship with Amelia and the one I shared with my beloved grandmother. When Emma gets a glimpse at Amelia’s past―one that no one knows exists―I understood her desire to uncover every single detail. The fact that Amelia’s story is based on true events made this tale that much more fascinating as well as heartbreaking.

I can only imagine how difficult Last Words was for Ms. Ryan to write. It’s a captivating mix of fiction and real life, and I think she did a beautiful job of telling this story. I can’t help but think that there might be a few very important people in her life who are incredibly proud of her. I know one thing for sure; her tale will be one that sticks with me for a very long time.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There are no words to try to convey to you the depth of my love for this story. Shari is such an amazing writer - she is able to capture your heart and your attention from the very first words and then she keeps you engaged and enthralled the entire time. This quite possibly is my favorite book to date from her.

This story is raw and gritty at times and then heartwarming and funny at others. There is a beautiful theme of survival and love that sees beyond hatred – a love that stares deep into the soul of another human being, finding compassion and something to keep fighting for – and a trust that goes beyond comprehension. This is love and acceptance at its most basic level and Shari’s words bring this journey to life in a stunningly beautiful way.

Told in past and present day, Shari does an amazing job of character development – you see inside the character's souls - I absolutely love the dynamic of three generations of women, the chemistry of Jackson and Emma, and of course the story of Charlie and Amelia. I laughed, I cried – no, I sobbed, and I was totally spent by the end of the book – but my bucket was full – overflowing actually. This journey with Shari is magnificent!!! I highly recommend this book!!
