WHEN JUSTICE IS BLIND, SCAVENGERS DO THE HUNTING

Blake Hudson just wants to serve his country well as a lawyer for the United States Justice Department—but when an unknown threat begins plotting his downfall, he must find who is setting him up before it costs him his life.

Scavenger Hunt is a suspense novel chronicling the plight of Blake Hudson, a Justice Department lawyer assigned to a clandestine counterterrorist group created to bypass onerous legal requirements. After the group mysteriously disbands, Hudson becomes the scapegoat and is transformed from hunter to hunted. As he searches for answers and attempts to piece the puzzle together, people are following him, trying to kill him.

Written for fans of fast-paced thrillers, dry humor, political gamesmanship, and Clue-like twists and turns, Scavenger Hunt carves out a distinct niche best described as a hybrid of the Robert Ludlum classics and works by Brad Meltzer. Blake Hudson’s story addresses issues that have shaped recent elections and continue to frustrate interest groups and government leaders, while featuring the inner workings of the U.S. Department of Justice Building—arguably the most important and misunderstood agency in the federal government. Author Chad Boudreaux’s unique voice and page-turning storytelling packs a plot-driven punch that readers won’t be able to put down.

Scavenger Hunt is a first novel by Chad Boudreaux. It is a political thriller that will force the reader to constantly turn pages. The action is centered mostly in Washington, DC although there are many scenes depicting action and intrigue in China, Iran, Mexico and Pakistan. The main character is a charismatic attorney working in the office of the Attorney General who becomes one of the members of a 4 person team known as Operation Scavenger Hunt. He unwittingly becomes involved in various nefarious plots and actually finds himself in delicate situations which put his life in peril.
The writing is excellent. Mr. Boudreaux’s phrasing is memorable, especially in descriptions such as “…suit sewn together before the invention of the microwave oven.” The book was a pleasure to read and I thank NetGalley and Morgan Jones Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this novel prior to publication. I look forward to many more novels from Chad Boudreaux.

This debut novel by a first-time author features a lot of action and intrigue. The fallout and explanation provided me with closure. Blake Hudson is a lawyer who works for the US Attorney General. He's recruited to be part of an organization called Operation Scavenger Hunt, which is dedicated to fighting terrorism outside of the regular operations of the government.

The characters were intriguing, and I was able to get to know them better as I watched more about what goes on behind the scenes of the Justice Department. The connections between the various individuals were also fascinating. The last few pages of the book were even better than the first half, and I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a legal thriller. The constant action and twists kept me entertained, and the loose ends got tied up.

‘Scavenger Hunt’ is a spy thriller. It begins with Blake Hudson serving as a lawyer for the US justice system. However, as his research begins, his life also becomes in danger. You see a fast-paced political battle filled with humor and addresses underlying issues such as problems with elections and government leaders.
The concept of the book is clear, and from the book cover, you instantly know the story is going to be exciting to read. There are elements of suspense and act of terror that entice the reader.

The author has done a very good job presenting this book. The story has no flaws and instantly grabs your attention. Black’s personality pulls the story together, and his witty character makes this book all the more enjoyable to read.

I recommend this book to political thrillers.

Overall, an excellent legal thriller! Be forewarned, Scavenger Hunt is really heavy on D.C./DOJ/government/legal lingo. I’m a tax lawyer (retired) and this one took me some time to get into with all of the lingo. The author does a great job explaining it, but the book comes across as highly procedural until the midway point.

I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and seeing more about what kinds of things happen behind the doors of DOJ. The incredible network the characters had all amassed during their work was so intriguing. And Judge? I adore him.

The last 1/3 of the book was even better than the first 2/3–it’s what took this from 4 to 5 stars for me. The action is constant, there are twists, and loose ends get tied up.

For a legal thriller, I recommend this, and would read another book by this author. Thank you to the author for a review copy!

Scavenger Hunt Chad Boudreaux
An interesting twist on the black ops/espionage thriller genres from more of a political point of view. The main character is an attorney working for an off the books group of operators that targets terrorists. The group disbands he is suddenly the fall guy. He scrambles to keep alive and figure out what is happening.
A great debut! Interesting perspective from the Department of Justice which is not often seen. Looking forward to more from Chad Boudreaux.

In the realm of page-turning thrillers, "Scavenger Hunt" by Chad Boudreaux emerges like that mysterious old chest you find in your grandma's attic. It's dusty, it's been there for a while but oh boy, once you open it, the whirlwind of secrets, danger, and stark raving political madness just pulls you right in. Our knight in shining legal armor, Blake Hudson, doesn’t just go about with a magnifying glass, oh no, he dives headlong into a world where truth is the needle in a deadly haystack.
Now, the book doesn’t just toss you into the deep end. It lures you in with the promise of justice, a smidgen of bureaucratic humor, and then BAM! You’re knee-deep in a plot thicker than grandma’s Sunday gravy. Boudreaux, the literary chef, serves us a hearty meal of suspense, with a side of dry wit that would make even the sternest of bureaucrats crack a smile.
You see, Hudson is not your run-of-the-mill lawyer. He’s the kind you’d want by your side when the going gets tough. And trust me, the going gets tougher than overcooked beef jerky. As the sinister plot against him unfolds like a dark, stormy cloud, our man navigates through the perilous political maze with the kind of resolve that makes you want to cheer him on from the sidelines.
The writing? Oh, it’s like Boudreaux took a leaf out of Robert Ludlum's book but decided to sprinkle in some of Brad Meltzer’s modern-day flavor. It’s a narrative that keeps you on your toes, wondering what's going to leap out at you from the next page. And the characters, they’re as real as they come. They laugh, they cry, they fear, but most importantly, they fight. They fight for truth in a world where deceit is the order of the day.
Boudreaux, with his debut, doesn’t just knock on the door of the thriller genre; he kicks it open with a story that’s as engaging as it is thought-provoking. And as I closed the book, I couldn’t help but wonder, in a world full of scavengers, how far would I go to hunt down the truth?

3.5. I enjoyed reading a different type of thriller than I am used to, and I liked how the author has experience to be able to provide details that are very realistic. My one critique is that there are a lot of characters to keep track of and it’s hard to remember who is who at times, especially as sometimes the character is referred to as their first name and other times as their last name.

I’m giving this book 4 stars for making me want to stay up late to see what happens, for NO language, and for a gospel presentation in the middle of the book. Way to go, author!
The writing wasn’t the smoothest and I had a hard time following what was happening, but, that’s kind of normal for me with these kinds of books.

I generally shy away from anything that hints of politics, but the title of this one drew me in and before I knew it I was finished!

This book is written by a debut author to watch. There's a great deal of action that kept me captivated, and the explanation and fallout afterward gave me satisfying closure. Blake Hudson is an attorney working in the US Attorney General's office. He's recruited to join "Operation Scavenger Hunt", which is a clandestine group tasked with fighting terror outside of the general purview of the government bureaucracy.

If you like the Slow Horses /Slough House books and TV series, or the Mission Impossible movies, this is a book for you. Full of action and intrigue, you'll be alternately holding your breath and gasping throughout.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Standard 0.5 point penalty for bad thing happening to animal.

The story in this one was actually pretty decent. But the writing—oof. It was stiff and full of dialogue no human being would ever use. Many adverbs, adjectives and verbs felt like the author had Googled “synonyms for (word)” and chosen the least used synonym available. (Of course, in this day and age, AI is always a possibility). And at least twice, he referred to people having “auburn colored eyes”. Dark-ish red hair is auburn. With the exception of a meme popular in Michigan right now, showing Steve Yzerman fleecing yet another NHL GM in a trade, eyes are not that color.

A gripping thriller addressing terrorism - and counterterrorism - on tenterhooks!

Virginia author Chad Boudreaux earned his degree from Baylor University, served in the US Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security and now is chief legal officer for a military shipbuilder. He appears to be making his literary debut with SCAVENGER HUNT, and given his foundation in legal and security expertise and experience in dealing with counterterrorism and conspiracy, it is not surprising that his writing debut blends credible themes at the intersection of law and national security with exceptionally fine writing.

In a wisely defined manner of relating an event, first from the eyes of the perpetrator then from the reportage of the event, Boudreaux intensifies the novel’s status as a thriller, opening in San Francisco with, ‘Plunging to the earth, he struggled to control his breathing as his insides clawed through his skin. More than forty thousand people stared at him, the latest cause célèbre. The world moved in slow motion, even as he plummeted. The wind whipped around his denim jeans and through his curly hair. As he descended, the explosive roar of the crowd became deafening. Hysterical fans screamed, danced, clapped, and slapped high-fives…’ A television report in Maryland then reveals this as a terrorist attack by a suicide bomber, killing thousands! Attention captured, this exceptionally fine thriller is outlined by the author as a novel ‘chronicling the plight of Blake Hudson, a Justice Department lawyer assigned to a clandestine counterterrorist group - Operation Scavenger Hunt - created to bypass onerous legal requirements. After the group mysteriously disbands, Hudson becomes the scapegoat and is transformed from hunter to hunted. As he searches for answers and attempts to piece the puzzle together, people are following him, trying to kill him.’

This is a completely satisfying novel that alerts the literary world that a significant new voice has stepped onto the stage. Related with an impressive depth of experience and a fine wry wit, this is an extraordinary debut novel. Chad Boudreaux is a gifted author to follow. Very highly recommended.

In Chad Boudreaux's Scavenger Hunt, readers are taken on an intense thrill ride with well-developed characters amidst a backdrop of realistic events. The narrative follows Blake Hudson, a diligent lawyer for the United States Justice Department who finds himself thrown into a high-stakes game of life and death. After his clandestine counterterrorist group disbands, Hudson is left to fend for himself, transitioning from being the hunter to the hunted.
Scavenger Hunt is a pretty compelling read, skillfully blending fast-paced action, dry humor, and political gamesmanship. It is quite similar in style to Robert Ludlum’s Bourne books, enriched with Brad Meltzer-like twists and turns, while providing a unique insight into the workings of the U.S. Department of Justice. The narrative arc takes a gripping turn with the apprehension of a terrorist mastermind, leading to a race against time to prevent further destruction.
Boudreaux, with his background in homeland security and justice, brings authenticity to the story, making the narrative as engaging as it is informative. However, while "Scavenger Hunt" successfully delivers as an action-packed thriller, its strength lies in its characters. Blake Hudson, gifted with a dry sense of humor, is an unusual but appealing choice for a hero, making the story more relatable and the stakes even higher.
I found Scavenger Hunt to be a thought-provoking thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing can be relentless which may be too much for some, and the plot at times dense - but these are minor quibbles in an otherwise highly enjoyable read. For fans of political thrillers, this book is a must-read.

Scavenger hunt is a political / legal thriller that follows our main character, Blake Hudson. Blake works for the office of the attorney general. After a suicide bomber parachutes into a sports stadium and sets off a bomb killing countless people, Blake finds himself thrust into a four person covert team named ‘operation scavenger hunt’. Soon Blake finds himself caught up in a dangerous whirlwind of plots, treachery and accusations as chaos ensues.

The last third of the book was action pact with twists, revelations and fast moving suspense, causing the reader to quickly turn the pages and tie all the loose ends together.

Although this isn’t my go to genre, I found our MC very likeable, entertaining and witty. And of course Judge is lovable as well. There is plenty of action and adventure in this book so I would recommend for those who like to be kept on the edge of their seat.

This is the authors debut novel, and he did an excellent job in the presentation of the story and the attention to detail in the plot. The heavy presence of legal jargon seemed to be accurate and legitimate. As a reader who isn’t familiar with the lingo I found i was able to quickly ease into the vocabulary and follow along with no issues.

I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys suspense, action, and legal thriller genres. Sitting at 276 pages this is a nice quick read. If you like to sit and finish a book in one day, this could be the perfect read for you!

Thank you to the publisher for the copy - all opinions are my own.

Scavenger Hunt proves to be a hugely entertaining, action packed political thriller, and reminded me once again just how much I enjoy a well crafted political caper as a genre.

This is a truly entertaining read - well paced, with interesting and dynamic characters, a shady political, off-the-books mission, terrorists doing very bad things and "good guys" who are doing bad things to stop the bad guys in their tracks. It hits the nail on the head for each key component to make for good reading.

I also really love that Chad Boudreaux comes from the D.C. political lawyer life, which means that this plot in infused with the real behind the scenes vibes of how this world works. It is such a fascinating lens to build a plot on, with the Attorney General's office being the foundation of the story rather than it coming from the CIA or FBI. I won't hint at any spoilers but I will say the action just kept ratcheting up chapter by chapter and there were some delightful twists I didn't see coming.

Truly a must have this spring for those who enjoy a good spy thriller and political mystery. You won't want to miss it!

The protagonist in Scavenger Hunt, Blake Hudson, an attorney working closely with the Attorney General's office, finds himself unwittingly thrust into the heart of Operation Scavenger Hunt. This covert operation, while initially seeming like a noble endeavour, soon unravels a tapestry of international intrigue. As the narrative progresses, the lines between right and wrong blur, leaving Hudson —and the reader—questioning allegiances, motives, and the true cost of justice.
Boudreaux's writing shines in his ability to craft memorable phrases and paint vivid scenes, making the political landscape of D.C. come alive in all its complexity. All characters are interesting an have good depth, with Blake Hudson’s journey being particularly poignant. His struggles with trust, morality, and the weight of his decisions add depth to the narrative, making it resonate on a deeply personal level.
The latter part of the book is a crescendo of action and revelations, with unexpected twists that kept me engaged right until the end.

Boudreaux has an interesting perspective to offer us in his main character, Blake Hudson. Blake isn’t just a legal expert; he’s part of a counter-terrorism group within the US government. Though a few characters have depth, Blake feels real, and I can only credit Boudreaux’s unique roles in the government for the texture we see.

The book opens with an act of terrorism and then jettisons into a thrilling, high-stakes political rainstorm that doesn’t let up. The book is paced well and rarely lulls in action or engaging content. There are many twists and pieces that come to light as Blake navigates his world that is crumbling around him. Death knocks often, and revenge is fresh in his heart as he pushes the action to the end in twists you’ll never see coming.

This is a cool book. It’s one of the rare occasions an author doesn’t just info-dump their knowledge of a field or topic and oversaturate the narrative with jargon or unnecessary inside knowledge. Scavenger Hunt is worth your weekend. I definitely recommend it.

This book is a fast-paced suspense novel set in the world of Blake Hudson, a Justice Department lawyer. He has been assigned to a clandestine role for a counter-terrorist group for legal support. As his work progresses, he finds himself in tough situations, which get gruesome for him with each passing day. He finds himself as a scapegoat and tries to solve the enigma of relation drawn by the case and his near-by situations. This reveals the situation of "survival of the fittest." As he gets nearer to the answer, he gets deeper, and the situation gets more chilling.
The subplots will be engaging and will unpack many twists and turns to keep the readers hooked with excitement to know what comes next. I was amazed to read the detailed subplots, followed by the well-maintained intricacies of each situation. The characters are well written, and at many points you would not agree with their deeds, but as the story progresses, its significance will be proved. This increases relatability and increases engagement. Overall, it was an amazing read for my weekend

Chad Boudreaux is a new writer on the political thriller scene. His character Blake Hudson, is a government lawyer who is drawn into the machinations surrounding a clandestine counterterrorist group that is created to find and eliminate a dangerous terrorist.

The group is mysteriously shut down and almost overnight, people in Hudson’s orbit begin dying and he becomes the primary target in an unknown game. As Hudson attempts to get answers to this dangerous game, there are people looking for him that have his death as their only goal.
Scavenger Hunt is a very good thriller. It offer good character development, interesting story narrative with a good, although slightly too tidy conclusion.

Scavenger Hunt is a good first effort in the political thriller / suspense genre.

This is a debut novel by Chad Boudreaux, but it certainly doesn’t read like one. The words on the pages seem to have been penned with a blend of finesse and audacity that kept me tethered to the unfolding drama. I wasn’t just flipping pages; It felt like peeling back layers of a meticulously crafted political thriller that's as engaging as it is thought-provoking.

“Scavenger Hunt” isn’t just a book; it's an exploration into the labyrinth of political machinations with a protagonist who’s as real as the governmental issues the story delves into. Chad Boudreaux crafted a political thriller that’s not only a page-turner but also a mirror reflecting the convoluted dance between justice and political intrigue. And while political thrillers might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I loved it and I’m sure this book just might have the allure to change your usual order. Recommended.

Scavenger Hunt by Chad Boudreaux
Really enjoyed this book because of the scope of things that were covered.
Starts out with Blake and he's being recruited to combine with others to form a team that falls under the Scavenger Hunt project. He's a lawyer and all of them are either with
dept of justice, FBI, CIA etc. There are a lot of external branches that don't seem to fit what they are dealing with. Blake is new to all this and he starts seeing things and asking a lot of questions from others because people are dying...
Over time everything comes together and you can see how everything is then linked.
Fast paced action, thriller, political, worldwide, how things work in Upper espionage fields.

Highly Rated, Highly Disappointing

I ordered this book based on its high ratings on both Goodreads and Amazon, but it turned out to be one of the worst books I've ever read. In fact, I couldn't even finish it, leaving about 30 pages unread. I find the high reviews for this book almost fraudulent.

The story is incredibly dull and riddled with weird inconsistencies that you would expect the author to have thought through. The language is excessively casual and, quite frankly, boring. The conversations are exaggerated in tone and vocabulary, making them feel unnatural. The narrative attempts to mimic an action movie, craving sensationalism, but ultimately, it just makes the reading experience extremely tedious.

Scavenger Hunt by first time author Chad Boudreaux is a thrill packed novel. Excellent in detail and authenticity, it is about Blake Hudson who is lawyer for the Justice Department. He is assigned to a secret counter-terrorism organization. After a few successful missions, all of a sudden Blake has lost touch with every member, and soon finds that people are trying to kill him. Excellent twists and turns as Chad tries to solve the mystery of what has happened.
With everything going on in our country, it is a good look at the nuts and bolts of working at the Justice Department and makes one wonder – is this really fiction?
