I've read this book a thousand times, and I've just realized how mundane it is. Most of the problem is that all but this reading took place when I was in junior high and high school - I read ANYTHING I could get my hands on, and so I read a LOT of Danielle Steel.

The plot of this one is still on of my favorites, but the writing isn't great. They make the same joke at least three times, and I don't think you're supposed to notice.

This is my second Danielle Steel book. Heartbeat was a simple and easy read. But it was full of deep emotions. So I loved the book.

As someone who strongly believe in faith, destiny or kismath I loved the way Bill Thigpen and Adrian Thomsan shared their life together. Bill was honest and lovable while Adrian was strong and dedicated. They were a complete match for each other.

Babies! I'm sure they bring magic to the world. Maybe that's why I loved the read this much.

Simple, Heart touching and MAGICAL!

"Women who had children looked proud of themselves."
"She was willing to turn her whole life upside down for an unknown baby."
"'I love you so much.. you and the baby.' The beauty of it was that he meant it."

Blurb from Goodreads

Bill Thigpen, writer producer of the No.1 daytime TV drama was so busy watching his career soar that he never noticed his marriage collapse. Now, nine years later, living alone in Hollywood, even without his wife and kids, his life and success are still reasonably sweet. Top-of-the-chart ratings, good-natured casual affairs, and special vacations with his two young sons. His life is in perfect balance, he thinks.
Adrian Townshed thought she had everything: a job she liked as a TV production assistant and a handsome husband who was a rising star in his own field. In as enviable life they'd worked hard for--the American Dream. Until she got pregnant. Suddenly all she had was chaos. And Steven's ultimatum. Him or the baby. The question was: did he mean it? He did.
Bill Thigpen and Adrian Townshed collided in a supermarket. And the very sight of her suddenly makes him want more in his life.... a woman he really loves, a real family again. But does he need the heartache of another man's baby, another wife? Neither does. But they couldn't help it.
Danielle Steel touches the Heartbeat of two wonderful people as their friendship deepens into love, as they meet the obstacles that life presents with humor, humanity, and courage.

My Review

Bill Thigpen is the writer of a super popular tv show, his marriage ended due to his over commitment to the show but he still sees the kids, not as much as he would like and he is keeping commitment free so as not to get hurt. Adrian Townsend is beautiful, successful news reader & the perfect (for her) husband, Steven, although she is esentially estranged really from her family/friends because of Steven. Life with Stephen is great (according to them as the reader I can't say I agree) until Adrian falls pregnant and Stephen gives her the worst ultimatum, its him or the child.

I have to say I really struggled with Adrian's whole behaviour/attitude to Steven and I know a lot of it is being in that type of relationship. It just shows the long hold a person can have even when one escapes their clutches but I found it insanely frustrating. Bill is such a sweetie and so patient/understanding and rare to find someone like that.

There is a central theme when discussing Steven or when he appears for pressure/emotional blackmail, underhanded tactics to try and pressure Adrian to choose him over the pregnancy so I think a warning is needed here just because it can be a lot for someone to read depending on their background.

I went back and forth on Adrian and was invested in seeing where the story went, 3.5/5 for me.

My dad is a history buff. So, no matter how engrossing a book/movie/tv show is, he can’t completely enjoy it if it contains a historical inaccuracy. I, on the other hand, am a soap opera history buff. While Danielle Steel may know a great deal about wish fulfillment, she doesn’t know a great deal about daytime drama production.
‘Heartbeat’s leading man, Bill Thigpen, is the head writer/creator of a successful daytime soap which - despite the novel being written and taking place in 1990 - is broadcast live everyday. No one in the world of ‘Heartbeat’ finds this unusual, despite the fact no soap had regularly broadcast live since the 1960s. So, no matter how much romantic wish fulfillment Ms. Steel crams into ‘Heartbeat’ (and she crams quite a bit), I couldn’t completely enjoy it because of this glaring inaccuracy. Now, of course, I was hardly expecting an Arthur Hailey style mix of detail and drama; however, an attempt at research would’ve been nice. Although, in fairness to Ms. Steel, she was more than likely plotting her next three tomes while finishing this one.
Now for a word about ‘Heartbeat’’s content. It’s a simple, appealing (charming, even, at times) fairy tale of two likable individuals Finding The Courage To Love Again while facing an awkward, fraught situation. The two leads are unfailingly decent while the villain is one dimensionally selfish and mean (although, to be fair, Steven was very clear regarding his feelings about children and I certainly understand his desire never to be saddled with one).
‘Heartbeat’ is a love beat and a love beat is a good - but not great - vibration.

I believe that this is my first Danielle Steel book. I've liked other romances, but I have to say that this was not my favorite. The plot was weak, the characters cardboard. I could tell you what was going to happen in the end from about page 30. It was a long and painful process getting there. **stop here for spoilers *** The only surprise was when she came with the boys and Bill on the vacation and saved Tommy from drowning in the river. I didn't see that coming. It was an unusual topic as well. Our heroine gets pregnant. Here husband divorces her and all rights to the child because of it and leaves her. He takes all the furniture in the house. He is a jerk. Bill, on the other hand is loving, kind, considerate, thoughtful. Only he is that way because he wrecked his first marriage and now wants to be better. When they meet in the grocery store, it is apparent that they will get together. YUK! I think I won't read any more Daneille Steele. I wonder why so many people like her books.

I did it again. This is my third reading this book and I never feel tired of it. Heartbeat is a very heartwarming book. Steel's books might be a bit stereotype or a bit predictable but I love how it's written. But I think the truth behind the story is about second chance to love and to forgive ourselves. This book really swept my heart every time I read it. The friendship between Bill and Adrian brought them together and been meaning to start a whole new life. They shared their sorrows, supports each other and their friendship deepens into love. Even though I found it quite harsh to believe Adrian's husband divorced her just because she's pregnant, the storyline is believable and it really has strong plot line. It is quite a linear story with a little climax, but it is also very well developed till the end. I enjoy reading the book thoroughly and never get tired of it. It is also full of motivation, self-help, love, forgiveness and second chance to seek happiness. Maybe you'll think there's no hope and world will collapse, but you never know what will happen at the end of the day if you give up on life. It really teaches me that. I can read it over and over again, and I fully recommend you to read the book too.

Ugh! The only thing Adrian got right throughout the entire story was she really didn't deserve Bill at all! Bill is the only reason why I'm giving this book 3 stars - the guy deserves so much more than Adrian..

I cant believe that one of my family members passed this book along to me. Everyone close to me knows that I swore off Danielle Steel books year ago. Just got too repitous for me. Well, whats a girl to do. So I read it. The first half of the book was so good I could not put it down. Intriguing story line. Happily married couple, neither one wants children, when the wife comes down pregnant she wants to keep it, husband says no way, me or the baby. It was really very very good. Towards the middle of the second half it was true Danielle Steel all the way. Just the same things over and over and over and...well you get the picture. Of course it all worked out perfectly in the end. I am, once again, back on my Danielle Steel hiatus.

This book is great if you want a light read considering it was pretty simplistic. I have to mention it was repetitive and I personally didn't feel the characters were convincing enough meaning there wasn't a lot of depth to them. Overall its not as bad as people say, it was predictable yes, but it is a romance novel from the early 90's.. & anyway it does have that soap opera feel to it in terms of writing which means the dialog between characters can be shallow and bland. All this and the basic plot can actually make it quite frustrating to read. But if that's not a problem then by all means pick it up.

Masuklah Bill Thigpen, duda beranak dua sekaligus produser sukses.

Udah begitu sampai menjelang akhir cerita...

Duuuhh.. jadi ngeri-ngeri sedap kalau baca novel author ini.

Entretenida y actual.

Heartbeat tells the story of two people who face the heartbreak of their spouses leaving them. Through the pain they are able to find each other and show that love does conquer all. f

This book was really well written and I did have a hard time putting it down. At times I just wanted to yell at Adrian to stop being an idiot, but had she actually listened to me then there would be far less drama in the book.

As amazing as this book was, I couldn't help being bothered by the inconstant way Bill was portrayed. In the beginning he was such a jerk, and suddenly presto-changeo he became the ideal man that any woman would want. It was odd.

Other than that, fantastic book. Go read it now!

They agreed to not have kids and she gets surprised when he indeed doesn't want the kid?? I don't like how steven was portrayed as the bad guy, sure he did act rashly and overreacted to the news and his reasons/fears could've easily been resolved if he went to therapy. It doesn't make his feelings about kids any less valid. He didn't want kids, she wanted the baby. If he pretended and stayed with her, he'd come to resent her and the baby in the long run and would-ve probably turned abusive.

Adrian spent the better part of the book, mopping around and waiting pathetically for her husband that come back and that was annoying. Even when she started whatever she did with Bill.

Overall, this read like a book to pass time because there's nothing else to do.

The extraordinary thing about this, is that I read about half of this book before getting to a scene which I suddenly realized I'd already read. So either there's a very similar scene (during the camping trip), or I read this book ages ago. I know many years ago I read some Danielle Steel novels while visiting my sister-in-law... I guess this must have been one of them. But aside from that one scene, nothing else felt familiar. Very strange. This amnesia didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. Fine for last days of holiday.

Beautiful story . I wish I could get me a Bill thigpen. A baby broke up a home but created a better one ❤️😻❤️.... Adrian gave Steven punk self more chances than that POS deserved .... Bill worked so hard , lost his first family due to his job but GOD blessed him with another one while he still was there for his other children. I loved this book along with the movie version too ....

This book wasn't that great. Way too predictable. Adrian's husband's character was just unbelievable and the romance between her and Bill was way too drawn out. I didn't really care about the soap opera either. I was more interested in characters they mentioned once or twice.
