The Blood Countess

Rate this book
Pandora English is no ordinary small town orphan. When she's invited to live with her mysterious Great-Aunt Celia in New York City, she seizes the opportunity to escape her stifling hometown break from her tragic past and make it as a writer. Things, however, are not what she is expecting. For starters, her great-aunt's gothic mansion is in a mist-wreathed Manhattan suburb that doesn't appear on maps. And then there's Celia herself - a former designer to the stars of Hollywood's Golden Age - who is elegant, unnaturally young and always wearing a veil. Pandora lands a job at a fashion magazine and her first assignment is covering the A-list launch of the latest miracle cream, BloodofYouth. But something is not right about the product, nor Athanasia, the drop-dead beautiful face of the brand. It seems there may be a secret ingredient in BloodofYouth, a secret worth killing for...

The Blood Countess is a fairytale. Orphan girl grows up “different” in a small town. Great-aunt invites her to the big city. Great-aunt transforms her life. Girl has to discover her power (linked to discovering her identity) and use it. There are villains to defeat.

What gives this story life beyond the fairytale framework is the confident yet vulnerable voice of the heroine and the fabulous use of New York as the setting. New York is perfect for fairytales.

Two handsome princes was a nice touch…each with their own issues. As you read the book, you can see Tara setting the scene for future stories.

The style and plot are light, easy to read fun. The world created is appealing. If you like your paranormal romance with a touch of fashion, you’ll adore this first-in-a-series.

This book was an enjoyable easy read, a gothic atmosphere with supernatural and urban fantasy tied up within the world of fashion and cosmetics. While it was intriguing to read, I felt the plot was a bit basic especially when it came towards the end, and the characters weren't fleshed out enough for me as Pandora worked alone with only some input from side characters. We get to know her well enough though and she's a like-able lead, and Great-Aunt Celia adds some dramatic flair although I would have liked it better if she was in it a bit more instead of being an omnipresent presence that showed up only to help the plot move forward.
Suitable for 16+ and fans of Libba Bray and Leigh Bardugo.

Ultimately I found Blood Countess to be a disappointing read. A large part of that was to do with expectations not being met. I went into reading this book blind, I haven't read any of Tara Moss' other work but like her I have an appreciation for weird tales, and gothic horror. After reading the book blurb I was expecting Gothic horror in a modern setting and some subtle digs against the fashion industry.

What I got was well...I am not sure, it felt like pilot episode for a Buffy clone. It's written in first person, but I didn't find the character's voice genuine, she's at times a naive country girl and others her voice sounds distinctly older and more like the author's.

At no time am I as a reader ever concerned that Pandora's life is in danger, for a book that should hang heavy with atmosphere, there is none.

The ending was anticlimactic too. A 400 year old serial killing vampire vanquished with a talsimanic hand mirror in two pages.

The blood countess hardly features in the book at all, when you have Elisabeth Bathory as an antagonist you really owe it to the genre to use every ounce of the malevolent and sadistic horror and history that she brings.

I was given a quick summary of what to expect of this book so I knew what I was getting into - ghosts, vampires and lots of paranormal activity, usually books I keep away from but when they're written by my favourite author/s I make an exception. And again I was not disappointed. Tara Moss has stepped away from her phenomenal crime-fighting books and has given the reader an exquisite paranormal romance series. In this beautiful, well-crafted book we read about Pandora English, a sweet young woman, if not a little nerdy, of 19, leaving her aunt and small hometown of Gretchenville to move to Spektor, NY, a place that doesn't really exist, into her great aunt Celia's top floor apartment, the floors below are a no go zone but when noises are heard Pandora's curiosity gets the better of her and she investigates. Here we'll find ghosts and blood sucking vampires and a protagonist who can handle herself very well.
This is such a fun and quirky read and the dark twists gives it an entertaining and engaging read.

This book was slow-moving, but it had me firmly gripped and didn't let go until the last page, because it was so damn interesting.

Highly recommended.

Fantasy ✔️ Intrigue ✔️ suspense ✔️ romance ✔️

This is my second time reading this series and I forgot how GOOD it is!! It’s such an easy read, the words and story just flow so easily and once you start reading you just don’t want to put the book down. As always, in my eyes the sign of a good author is one who is able to make their words come alive and allow me to picture what’s happening in my head and that’s exactly what Tara Moss was able to do.

I love the world Tara Moss has created, the idea of Specktor, the vampires and the house Pandora and Celia love in is just so clever and different. I love how nurturing and yet un-nurturing Celia is to Pandora, providing her with fashion help etc and then leaving her to behead a vampire lol 😂

I LOVE Lieutenant Luke 💜

Looking forward to reading book 2.

A great, fun read with a smart and engaging protagonist and a mystery to solve. Pandora English comes from a small town, where she went to live with a strict aunt after her parents died in Egypt. It's been drilled into her that she has strange fancies that her just her imagination, but the reader can see long before Pandora accepts it that she can see ghosts and has premonitions.

Pandora arrives in New York at the start of the book to stay with her elderly Great Aunt Celia, hoping to break into journalism at a fashion magazine. But there are many mysteries, starting with her great aunt's strange youthfulness and the peculiar suburb of Spektor, which doesn't seem to be on any maps, and proceeding to the disappearance of her predecessor at Pandora Magazine, the creepiness of a new skin creme called BloodofYouth and the secrets of a nasty supermodel.

I'm not really that interested in fashion, so I was pleased that Moss hit just the right note for me in the fashion-related sections of the text. Pandora wants to be a journalist, so her interests go beyond clothes and shoes, but she has a healthy respect for style and elegance. :)

Her encounters with the Civil War ghost Luke are sweet, and it turns out that she can fend for herself fairly well with both the New York fashion magazine scene and the paranormal creatures she increasingly encounters throughout the story.

The basics of the story wrap up but there are loose ends, and I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment to find out what's going to happen with the human, handsome Jay, the spectral Luke and the attitudes of Pandora's editors at the magazine.

Re-read because I finally found the other books in the series and the author managed to finally get the latest one published! Still a fun read. I love great aunt Celia, the socialite that still speaks as though she's in the 1940s.

I started this series backwards, I read number three a couple of years ago. I really like this series, its gritty and has got an accomplished Gothic feel to it. Pandora English is no ordinary girl, she sees the world as it really is.

I just read that the author has been trying to get book 4 of this series published since 2014. This is disappointing. Moss is a talented writer, support homemade authors people!

I was blown away by this book's mediocrity. A shame, I had such high hopes given I have read every one of Tara's previous books and loved them.

It made me feel slightly queasy quite a bit of the time. I guessed about the blood ingredient in the 1st few pages. I also felt like I was in an Addams Family twilight zone with some of the names she chose. I didn't identify with the heroine and the book was a disappointment in lots of ways.
Sorry Tara, you can't win 'em all.

Wonderful! It has a fresh YA feel on one hand and on the other it's a pretty sophisticated social satire. I loved it. Looking forward to more Pandora English!

Unfortunately I could only find the cover of the audiobook, but do not be dismayed readers as it is available in print format as Im not one for audiobooks , I dont mind listening to music on my IPOD but when it comes to books , I prefer to read not listen.
The Blood Countess by Tara Moss is Book #1 in a new series called "The Pandora English" which tells the tale of Pandora English and her arrival to her great-aunt Celia's house. Her great-aunt Celia has a secret though, she has powers and is a Sanguine, not a Vampire as sorts but still an immortal and forever have youthful beauty. For years, as a child Pandora experienced the ability to predict death and communicate with the dead -after being told it was nonsense as a child -she harnessed her ability in and blocked it out , now 18 and living with her aunt Celia - strange things have happened and what will happen to Pandora as she gets caught up in a Vampire scandal with BloodYouth model Anathasia and ends up staking her. Soon Pandora finds herself trapped with The Blood Countess : Elizabeth of Bathory, will she escape or will she find herself becoming one of the things she killed and what will happen then to Lieutenant Luke - a ghost from the civil war whom Pandora has a crush on.

The Blood Countess is book one in the Pandora English series by Tara Moss. Things started to change for Pandora English when she decided to go and live in New York City with her Great-Aunt Celia. At first, Pandora English wanted the opportunity that moving to New York City would give to became a writer. However, for Pandora, the move to New York City did not live up to her expectation. The readers of The Blood Countess will continue to follow Pandora to find out does Pandora became a writer.

The Blood Countess is paranormal-mystery and genre I do not usually read. However, I did not engage with the plot of this book, and for that reason, I will not read another book in this series. I like Tara Moss portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other. The Blood Countess was well written and researched by Tara Moss.

The readers of The Blood Countess will learn about working in the fashion industry in New York. Also, the readers of The Blood Countess will learn about gothic architecture.

I recommend this book.

Bueno… pues muy sin más.
¿Me ha enganchado? Si.

I enjoyed the YA book and it had interesting characters and plot. I am hoping some of the characters are in the second book, as I wasn’t sure what happened to some of the side characters and would love to know. I give it four stars.

You know what? I really enjoyed The Blood Countess by Tara Moss. It wasn’t super-deep (it’s about fashion and magazines in New York), and it wasn’t brooding and angst-ridden. It was fun, entertaining and amusing.

The main character, Pandora, comes to New York from some tiny hicksville town, to stay with her great aunt. She was desperate to get away from said small town partly because of the hicks and partly because it’s her dream to be a writer and work at a New York magazine. Back home, where she lived with her aunt since her parents died in her teens, she spent her time living in books because there wasn’t much else to do and because she didn’t have any friends. She was the town weird kid thanks to her ability to see and speak to ghosts (strongly discouraged by her parents when they were still alive).

She arrives in New York to be greeted by her great aunt’s mysteriously mute chauffeur, who then takes her to her great aunt’s home in a tiny suburb of Manhattan that doesn’t appear on any maps. Also, her great aunt’s building is haunted. Also, vampires, many of which are jolly (seriously, it makes a nice change from the brooding kind).

The story follows Pandora’s attempts to find a job and to start building a career in New York. Suspicious things are happening in the fashion world, mostly centred around a revolutionary new face cream, sinister models and, well, general supernatural shadiness.

To be honest, it’s not the plot that makes this book. Really, the villain of the piece is named in the title, so I don’t think it was supposed to be a surprise. What makes this book book stand out is the voice of the protagonist. In her childhood, her parents and shrink convinced her there was no such thing as ghosts and effectively trained her into keeping quiet and ignoring her “vivid dreams”. That said, once strange things start happening and she starts searching for and getting some answers, she doesn’t spend very long running around in a haze of denial like in some books I won’t mention (and she was quite quick to accept the ghosts back into her life).

More importantly, her inner monologue and her interactions with her great aunt are funny and quirky and really made the book for me. It cheered me up during a stressful week. The digs at pop culture, of varying degrees of unsubtlety also helped.

A small thing that I liked was the way Moss described Pandora’s clothes and didn’t superfluously describe every item of clothing every model who walked past was wearing. As someone not very au fait with the fashion world (shocking revelation, I know), it was nice to have clothing described in a straight forward way with a minimum of slang. I’ve read too many books which expected me to know more clothes/fashion terms than I do, including books not actually about fashion. It was an appreciated touch.

I definitely recommend this book for some light, pleasant reading. So long as you’re not expecting a deep exploration of supernatural lore and human psychology, you shouldn’t be disappointed.

The Blood Countess is a clever, intense and delightful read that blends the glamourous world of fashion with the shadowy paranormal would that lies within to ours. I can’t get over how much I loved this, and can’t wait to continue Pandora’s adventures in the next books.

The story sucks you right in with Pandora’s unique and vivacious narration, and very soon you’re immersed in her life. She’s a great character: spunky, nervous but brave, courageous and intelligent, all the things I love in my protagonists. I love that Moss didn’t feel the need to imbue Pandora with a closed off attitude, feelings of inferiority or clumsiness to make her accessible to readers, I think it will be easy for anyone to relate with her character because Moss focusses more on Pandora’s situation, a small town person now living in New York, rather than on traits to make her seem normal. She has her fatal flaw: insatiable curiosity, but it is tempered by her cleverness.

The world Tara Moss creates in this book is sumptuous and vivid, perfectly balancing the mystique and glamour of working in a fashion magazine with the peculiar and arcane happenings of the paranormal world. I love the glitz of the fashion runways, the travel in expensive cars, luxuriated in the expensive clothes vicariously through Pandora. Since I rarely read blurbs, I was surprised when it turned out Pandora started working at a fashion magazine and I had The Devil Wears Prada flashbacks, but I think it’s cleverly done and enjoyable. I also liked how Moss recreates the paranormal aspects, and how it’s emphasised how dangerous the creatures are, rather than romanticising them.

I really liked The Blood Countess, and believe anyone looking for a light, quirky paranormal read will enjoy it. It has something for everyone: romance, adventure, vampires, fashion, and is a great example of awesome, Australian writing. I’ve added the next two books, The Spider Goddess and The Skeleton Key, to my pile of holiday reading!

Vampires and high fashion models seem to be a recurring theme in a lot of modern paranormal romances. Is that a comment on the unnaturally good looks of these women, that normal girls can't possible look this good? Or am I reading too much into this, is it merely that Tara is familiar with this world so feels comfortable setting her characters there? Whatever the reason, it is not really my thing. I couldn't be less interested in the fashion world if I tried.

Stories of high fashion, fashion magazines and models and their world do not interest me in the slightest. Having said that, despite the prevaling fashion stories in this novel, I did appreciate certain world building aspects of it. I loved the whole hidden suburb in the middle of Manhattan, although you don't get to see much of it except for Pandora's home and the corner shop. I enjoyed the interaction with Pandora and her Great Aunt Celia, although Celia didn't seem to ever do much but read (I can relate to her)

The romance aspect of the book wasn't developed enough and we didn't find out what happened to her date by the end of the book. I thought that should have been resolved. And the romance with Lieutenant Luke, a ghost, is doomed from the start but you can't help hoping something works out.

The main plot line was Pandora's exposing of the secret behind Blood of Youth beauty cream, and while it was pretty obvious from the start what the secret ingredient was, it was enjoyable to follow Pandora on her investigations and see who the villain was in the end.

All in all, while I didn't think this idea was all that original, the execution was well done and the characters were likeable.

A contemporary Gothic fairy tale set in the New York fashion publishing industry, I found found it hard to relate to this heroine in spite of Ms Moss' writing skills. Pandora (the poor little orphan) has come to New York to live with her great aunt. She mysteriously gets a job at Pandora magazine when her predecessor disappears. She also starts noticing that her "imagination" is not so imaginary and she knows more than she should - including that there is something very wrong about the newest beauty product launch.

This is a very relaxed read. I can't call it 'cozy' as it is Gothic but it has that sort of feel. This is clearly the first of a series as it works mostly to set up the further stories. There is little sense of suspense and the romantic interests are barely fleshed out. There is no resolution, even an interim one, for either relationship.

On the other hand, there was lots of promise and I read the book in one sitting. I can see that the book two might be good fun and worth the effort. I liked the characters of Morticia, the receptionist, and the great aunt. The great aunt is like M from James Bond in a way.

This book had a great premise. Orphan small town girl invited to NYC by great-aunt, gets job with fashion magazine only to discover that the new miracle cosmetic that everyone is raving about is not the product of mortal design and once it wears off, let's just say beauty is only skin deep. Meanwhile, our lovely young heroine sees and talks to ghosts. The problem with the book is that it was dull. Our heroine came from a one horse town and yet adapted to NYC like a duck to water yet continued to do things that put herself in danger. Things that any 10 year old who watched even Sesame Street would know to avoid. The narration was nothing memorable and did not anything to the text.

So great. Just a fun, easy read but with enough excitement and suspense.
Pandora English moves from a sleepy Southern town to glamorous New York. She lives with her oddly ageless great Aunt in a semi abandoned building in a part of town that seems to not exist. Shockingly quickly, Pandora gets a job at a fashion magazine - also called Pandora - and becomes invested in investigating a new face cream called Blood of Youth. Surprise surprise, the face cream has a sinister secret ingredient.
There are only 3 books in the Pandora English series unfortunately, but i plan on opening the second one immediately.

I really enjoyed this book!

Pandora English is a small town girl who has moved to New York to find a job in journalism and to look after her frail old Great Aunt.

Of course when she gets there nothing is as it seems. Her Great Aunt is young, she lands a job at Pandora magazine (how appropriate), and she notices some strange things about the goings on around her.

There are a lot of paranormal books out there at the moment, but this one is fresh, light and fun.

I look forward to a new book in the series.
