How did you find the courage to write about such a tragic personal experience?
Hi Joni, thanks for asking. My sons and I tried to face this down from the beginning, knowing full well that you just can't turn your back on something like this or the horror would consume us. I couldn't accept that chaos was ruling. Ordering it into a story was healing for me, and sharing it with others helped me find meaning. From the start, I knew I would write about this one day with the fervor of a calling. I had faith that the benefit would be greater than the pain, and the notes I've gotten from readers—many of whom have never before been able to talk about the suicide of a loved one—have proved me right.
