SlothReader asked Kate Alice Marshall:

I'm interested in writing books. However, I started writing my first story in 2022 but eventually put it down. I've read two of your amazing books: What Lies In The Woods and NO ONE CAN KNOW, and I must say I had goosebumps reading to the end. What inspired you first to start writing? And what was that journey like? I would love to hear from you, it might give me motivation as well, haha.

Kate Alice Marshall I decided to become a writer before I actually could write, mostly because I wanted to be just like my mom. We were a very book-centric family, and did family reading and told stories around the dinner table every night from a very early age, and I couldn't imagine making my life about anything else. I started getting serious about publication when I was a teenager, submitting short stories and writing my first novel in the back of class instead of paying attention (not recommended). I didn't start having much success, though, until I was in my 20s, which I credit in part to starting to read more widely and critically, and experiment with new forms and genres. The most valuable thing I did was keep pushing myself and to always be working on a new thing, so I didn't get stuck on any one failure.

There's so much more to say, of course, but I hope that helps!
