While not as bad as everyone kept making it out, I don't think it's one of the better books. It's a second book of a series so of course there is action but it leads into the third book (what series doesn't do that now a days). I did think that there was a lot of fake deaths in this book, almost too many. It got to the point where someone would die and I'd be like How long before he got up.
But keep in mind this was one of R.A. Salvatore's first books so of course every writer grows with years of writing experience....more

That wasn't really the case but this was still a great book!
I did like that nothing was assumed and so a lot of background was explained. I don't like historical fiction that doesn't explain anything to you and assumes that you remember you high school history lessons! Spradlin did a great job of explaining it in a story like setting. I don't remember a lot about the Crusades and did learn a little in that time.
I did like the integration of fairy tales, the Robin Hood Maid marian line was a shock but a good shock and really added to the characters.
Some drawbacks of the book, while I do know it is a triology I hate books that just end, and you HAVE to read on. This just ends, there's no peace on anything. I really hate when books do that, it's not so much you want to read on you have to because it wasn't a full book.
I did feel that some of the characters were a little one sided, and that other characters were left out and not developed as much as they should or could have been.
And on a last note, this book is written in first person. For a first person book this book was alright, not annoying and not bad. ...more

First thing was that this book is written in first person, while 90% of books written like this don't work out, this is on the far end. Parts worked out but it did get a little boring reading it written like this.
Second, I would have loved a lot more sword action, I wanted more girl kick butt action. I'm hoping that in the second book there will be more of this but who knows.
Third, I was a little disturbed by how the book spent a lot of time on the whole girl being a boy and what went into it. The subject matter was a little mature and I'm not sure if parents in 7th and 8th grade would want their kids to be reading this.
Overall I wasn't as in love with this book as most people are, but I will definately read the second book. It was a good read but I don't know if I would recommend it to teens, maybe to people over 17 or so. ...more

Before anyone comments, I was a HUGE fan of the first book. Second book I thought was alright. This book sucked so bad. Between the terrible writing and the grammar and the fact that it was 800 pages of how long Paolini can babble about nothing and still keep an following.
The reason for the 4th book was this was for character development? What character development, the characters are more one sided then ever. You can almost predict what they will do before they do it because they are just that lame.
As for plot, it was just a bunch of go here go here. And then Eragon babbling in his mind about what will happen, could happen, might have, must happen.
I really wanted this to go somewhere, sadly it didn't. A waste of time, energy and really money.
I have to say this, Eragon is the poorest choice for a dragon rider. He can't make a choice for himself and he has no spine to stand up to anyone, so he just does what everyone wants him to.
It's a shame that the king who might be a good character is only refered to throughout the book. Maybe he can be the redeeming character in the 4th book.
There are so many sentances that start with "And" "Then" and "But" that they appear on every page in the book. That's just poor writing. It felt like a 3 year old telling me a story that they are excited about. Was there even an editor on this book? Or were they afraid that his teen ego would be hurt by the fact that obviously he never took English lessons in middle school or high school. That's the only thing I can think of, is that someone teaching him forgot to teach him grammar!
Lastly, remember you can write a 3000 page book and it could suck or you can write a 150 page book people liked. Maybe Paolini should remember that because these marathon books he isn't very good at and is definately not learning any respect from me. ...more

I stayed up late into the night to finish this book, so that is a sign that I loved it. One of the better sword and sorcery books that I have come across in a while.
This book was a take back to the fantasy books that have quests, magic, and great characters and plots. At first I wasn't sure if I was really going to bond with any of the characters, but to my delight I found myself loving Royce and Hadrian. There was a touch of humor that didn't come across as forced, a lot of books try to force the reader to laugh and I found myself chuckling at a couple of the jokes between the two.
There is a tiny bit of magic and of course a wizard, which isn't too complicated. I think this is great for anyone that is a fantasy lover or for teens who are starting out in the fantasy section of their library. I get frustrated when the magic in books is so complicated I feel I have to take notes, this wasn't the case at all.
The plot was swift but not swift enough that I found myself lost or parts over looked.Sullivan had a real skill in keeping the plot going and knowing just when to throw that curve ball in the plot or at what time it was perfect to reveal a certain crucial part of the plot to the readers! I was never left waiting too long to find out when something was going to happen but I was still sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next part of the book.
I loved that it was a stand alone novel of a series. The plot was wrapped up but there were parts of the book that were left open for the next book and the series beyond. A lot of series force the reader to wait till the next book to learn more, Sullivan can keep a reader and continue a series without leaving major cliff hanger and helps with the frustration of having to wait years for a book!
It's hard to find something to complain about in this book. Like any first time writers I look forward to seeing Sullivan grow as an author and I hope that in future books we get to know some more characters.
I highly recommend reading this book, whether your a fantasy lover or just looking to start out in it. I personally have recommended it to my family and anyone that will listen to read. It was good to see a lovely written fantasy/adventure novel. This book has found a place on my reading shelves next to my Terry Brooks books and of course Harry Potter. I really can't wait till the next book in the series! ...more

Maybe it was the introduction of new characters, or the fact that the bear was so involved with the murders. As a fellow bear lover I loved that. Also it seemed as though the amount of his bending the rules in the book was curbed which was nice.
It was a nice easy read on a snowy day! I would really recommend the series to anyone that read it.
What I also love is that you don't have to follow the series to pick up a book, feel free to start on this book, or read the others before this one!

Second, I felt the fact that they used Drizzet as a pull in to get others to read it. He's in it for maybe 5 paragraphs. What a poor gimick to get people to read it. I mean he's on the fricken cover but not a main character. Very disappointing.
Third, the plot was very slow. For a 300 page book NOTHING happened. I was waiting and waiting and nothing.
Fourth, this is not written by R.a. Salvatore while his name is on it. It's written by his son, and while new writers do need improvement this has a long way to go.

I loved the series and it was really something that I haven't encountered in a while. I love the whole adventure/action fantasy series. The characters were loveable and I loved the fact that they weren't perfect, as in they made mistakes in how they fought and they got hurt. All too often characters are invincible and it makes it hard to believe. There are character diaologe that is believe and makes it easy to understand what is going on.
However there were two things that made it a 4 star instead of a 5 and almost a 3 star. First off, there is a very graphic sex scene. Which there was a part to it but it didn't need to be so graphic, I was a little annoyed at such graphic nature of it. Second, at times some of the fighting got a little confusing.
There is the last thing, sometimes as far as dialouge there are lots of questions asked. It helps clarify what is going on but it does get a little annoying.
Over all I loved the book and will continue to read the series!...more

Bret bases this book off of tapings that he made while being on the road. Literally this is word for word the tapes. Every match is detailed from explaining the music and walking to the ring to the actions in the ring and of course the famous ONE TWO THREE pin count.
I did like some of the backstage and family drama but again there were pages and pages of just repeating the same stuff over and over again. And while I know there's two sides to every story Bret's story is VERY biased.
The whole second half of the book trashes Shawn Michaels and Vince. To the point where I wanted to scream We know you hate them please just stop.
The other thing I hated was this book was a whole Stroke your ego book for Bret. Wrestlers were always walking up to him saying, "Oh you do so much you are so misunderstood and underpaid" "oh your the greatest in wrestling".
While I believe he was good for wrestling I don't think 100s of people flock to tell him this.
Over all the book was poorly written and way to long. I skimmed a lot of the stuff because it was just match after match. After wading through that it was actually had a lot of backstage stuff, but keep in mind it's all done to stick it to ya to show how bad wrestling is now (And it's pretty boring now). ...more

But boy did Neff change as a writer from book 1 to 2. There is so much more depth to this book then the 1st, first off he learns to write better, so it isn't always "____ said" "_____ asked" which is a step up. There is also more action in this book, which flows nicer together then the first one. I do love the action, which is described nicely.
A few things I didn't like, if the writing grew he still at times tends to over use words. Doughy to describe any skin really irked me. And the dad, I would love this book if Max's dad could take it from a 25 and tone it down to maybe a 7.
Other then that I fell that if the first book hadn't been so blatently a rip off of Harry Potter, that this book would do better. Because the series definately does not turn out like harry potter.
I do like that the hero is the one being protected and the main person is not the real "hero" hero. ...more
