Marv is a penniless hulking brute from the most forgotten part of Sin City, but one lucky night he finds heaven in the arms of the most beautiful woman he has ever seen— Goldie— only to find her dead the morning next, and he being framed for the murder. Who wanted this angel dead? And why? One way or another, Marv is going to find out.
This was a very fine comic, and just by having experienced the first of seven issues I can see where it legendary fame comes from. The storytelling is simple yet also very dark and complex. The full story neatly divided into 13 short chapters of 8-12 pages each. The characters all but marginal, rogue and violent, yet everyone extremely compelling in their own twisted way. Marv, Goldie, Lucille, Wendy, Roark, all fantastic. The illustrations are beautifully artistic, exceptionally well designed, and drawing a lot of attention to themselves, my only gripe that I couldn't understand some of them. The black and white style is undeniably unique and with a superb neo-noir vibe.
I have very few comics in my shelves, most acquired randomly during my childhood; and even though I read this digitally, this is one of few exceptions that I wouldn't mind owing in physical format, to feel, glance and admire once in a while. All in all, this was a superb comic, an even though it wasn't exactly a favorite, still looking forward to reading and completing the rest of the series very, very soon.
**** The movie (2005) is an admirable adaptation, capturing much of the comic's soul and style. Mickey Rourke playing a fantastic Marv. Kevin the creepiest thing on earth, as much as in the comic. Flawless scenography, casting and ambience, with several unforgettable moments not easy to forget. So dark, and violent! Yet masterful in its way. Extremely faithful to the book. Highly recommendable. (8/10)

Marv es un pobre bruto descomunal de la parte más olvidada de la Ciudad del Pecado, pero una noche afortunada encuentra el cielo en los brazos de la mujer más hermosa que haya visto jamás— Goldie— sólo para encontrarla muerta a la mañana siguiente y él incriminado por su asesinato. ¿Quién quería ver a este ángel muerta? ¿Y por qué? De una forma u otra, Marv lo va a averiguar.
Este fue un cómic muy muy bueno y con sólo haber experimentado el primero de siete volúmenes puedo ver de dónde proviene su legendaria fama. La narración es simple pero también muy oscura y compleja. La historia completa bellamente dividida en 13 cortos capítulos de 8 a 12 páginas cada uno. Los personajes son todos marginales, rebeldes y violentos, pero cada uno de ellos extremadamente atrapantes en su retorcida forma. Marv, Goldie, Lucille, Wendy, Roark, todos fantásticos. Las ilustraciones son hermosamente artísticas, excepcionalmente bien diseñados y llaman mucho la atención, mi única queja que no pude entender algunas de ellas. El estilo en blanco y negro es innegablemente único y con un magnífico toque neo-noir.
Tengo muy pocos cómics en mis estantes, la mayoría adquiridos al azar durante mi infancia; y aunque leo esto digitalmente, esta es una de pocas excepciones que no me importaría tener también en formato físico, para sentir, mirar y admirar de vez en cuando. A grandes cuentas, este fue un cómic excelente, y aunque no fuera exactamente uno de mis favoritos, igualmente espero leer y completar el resto de la serie muy, muy pronto.
**** La película (2005) es una adaptación admirable, que captura en gran medida el alma y estilo del cómic. Mickey Rourke interpretando a un fantástico Marv. Kevin la cosa más espeluznante del mundo, tanto como en el cómic. Una escenografía, casting y ambientación impecables, con varios momentos inolvidables no fáciles de olvidar. Tan oscuro, ¡y violento! August 4, 2026. Decades after the Nuclear War, amongst the ruins of a wasted, irradiated, post-apocalyptic city, only one partly-charred house remains standing, with the last, lone inhabitant, obliviously trying to keep things running.
Wow. This was sublime. Talking about post-apocalyptic scenarios, Bradbury sure depicted here one beautifully grim picture. (view spoiler)[The house, the 'wall', the dog, the tiny automatons, and that flamingly poetic final moment. (hide spoiler)] Everything so oppressively devastating. And if not for that tiny piece of poetry, this would have been perfect, or almost. Along with "The Martian", my most or second most favorite piece of the whole collection. Highly Recommendable.

This went a bit too religious for my taste, but still good, very good. Like some sort of interplanetary religion treaty. Not bad. Certainly didn't see it coming. Bradbury seemed to have some interesting religious concepts and a profound sense of faith for someone so openly sci-fian.

But her parents, especially her overbearing mother Grace, are increasingly concerned, since she doesn't seem to care or make friends with any other children, or do any other thing than spending all day with her dearest robot friend. And hell breaks loose, when Robbie *mysteriously* disappears one day.
This was good. Very good! This is apparently the first robot short story ever written by Asimov, and my second read of the man after "Liar!". So far two winners out of two and looking forward to many more.
Truly a quite memorable, touching and thought-provoking story that invites to deep reflection. Loved the bondship between Gloria and Robbie and found the plot and rising tension quite gripping and emotional. Even after only two stories I find Asimov really excels at blurring the sentient line between man and machine, and if this characterizes all his writings, I can see where his sci-fi legendary prowess comes from.
Can a robot have a soul? Maybe, maybe not. Do all humans have a soul? Maybe, maybe not.

El segundo mejor amigo del hombre.
A la pequeña y mimada Gloria le encanta jugar día y noche con Robbie, su silencioso amigo robot; ya sea jugando al escondite, montando o simplemente contando historias. Pero sus padres, especialmente su sobreprotectora madre Grace, están cada vez más preocupados, ya que a la nena no parece importarle hacerse amiga de ningún otro niño, ni hacer otra cosa más que pasar todo el día con su querido robot amigo. Y el infierno se desata cuando Robbie *misteriosamente* desaparece un día.
Esto estuvo bien. ¡Muy bien! Al parecer ésta es la primera historia corta escrita por Asimov sobre robots, y mi segunda lectura del hombre después de "¡Mentiroso!". Hasta ahora dos ganadores de dos y esperando leer mucho más.
Realmente una historia bastante memorable, conmovedora y que invita a una reflexión profunda. Me encantó el vínculo entre Gloria y Robbie y la trama y la tensión creciente me pareció bastante atrapante y emotiva. Incluso después de tan sólo dos historias, encuentro que Asimov realmente sobresale en desdibujar la línea de lo conciente entre el hombre y la máquina, y si esto caracteriza todos sus escritos, puedo ver de dónde proviene su legendaria destreza en la ciencia ficción.
¿Puede un robot tener un alma? Quizás, quizás no. ¿Todos los humanos tienen alma? Quizás, quizás no.

This was nice, very nice, tragic nice in that special way of Marquez or Allende. As always the extensive overly descriptive style of Bécquer threw me off but gratefully, by now, I've learned to automatically and swiftly skim like a bandit, which helps, A LOT. Still good. Very good. Recommendable.
En una casa precaria de un barrio humilde de Sevilla, se celebra una fiesta pueblerina. A esto llega un turista anónimo que, conmovido e inspirado por la alegre escena, se pone a dibujar un boceto de la cantante principal del coro, la joven y encantadora Amparo, hija adoptiva del posadero local.
Esto estuvo bien, muy bien, trágico bien en esa manera especial de Márquez o Allende. Como siempre el estilo de escritura extenso y sobredescriptivo de Bécquer me desconcertó, pero afortunadamente, para estas alturas, ya he aprendido a rápida y automáticamente salter como un bandido, lo que ayuda, MUCHO. Igual sigue siendo bueno. Muy bueno. Recomendable.

My first (and hopefully my last) book or poetry/anti-poetry. Serious enough to pay homage to the genre, and irreverent enough to give it my personal FU and send it where it belongs.
I'm giving myself solid 3 stars, because, after all, this is still poetry, and though extremely short, it was enough for me to feel disgusted having trudged on this soil.
Are there books of poetry? Sure. Are there books of anti-poetry? Also, sure. Are there books that are kind of both? Probably not. So this is my gift to the world, this aberration. Enjoy!

¡Asqueroso!
Un pequeño libro de siete piezas de poesía y antipoesía, variando desde versos tradicionales hasta libres, desde poemas de amor hasta obscenos, haikus, una "Oda" y algunas quintillas. “Mi Asqueroso Libro de Poesía” es una muestra irreverente de poesía anticonvencional, que seguramente puede encantar tanto a amantes del género como a detractores de poesía por igual.
Mi primer (y ojalá mi último) libro de poesía/antipoesía. Suficientemente serio como para rendirle homenaje al género, y suficientemente irreverente como para darle mi saludo personal y mandarlo a donde merece.
Me doy sólidas 3 estrellas porque, al fin y al cabo, esto sigue siendo poesía y, aunque extremadamente corto, fue suficiente para hacerme sentir asqueado de haber transitado este camino.
¿Hay libros de poesía? Seguro. ¿Existen libros de antipoesía? También, seguro. ¿Hay libros que sean ambas cosas? Probablemente no. Así que este es mi regalo para el mundo, esta aberración. ¡Disfrútenlo!

But luck can only get you so far, and poor George fears the dreadful day his brother Tom might get his comeuppance.
Nice! A re-imagination of "The Ant and the Grasshopper" fable by La Fontaine, with a little devious twist. You can always count on good ol' Somerset Maugham to deliver a solid shortie with fine class and style. Like Graham Greene, I'm particularly fond of this type of classicness; almost never great, but always good enough to deliver something unique and memorable, in their way. Looking forward to encountering more of his stories, or reading some of his novels, long overdue by now. Recommendable.

Siempre viviendo de su familia y amigos, siempre arruinado y en problemas. Pero la suerte sólo puede llevarte hasta cierto punto, y el pobre George teme el terrible día en que su hermano Tom reciba su merecido.
Interesante! Una reimaginación de la fábula "La hormiga y el saltamontes" de La Fontaine, con un pequeño y perspicaz giro de trama. Man, Russian literature is poignant AF! My first Dostoevsky, and hopefully the beginning of many more. I can only speak for this little shortie, but if all his writings are as impactful, I can certainly see where the author's legendary fame comes from.
I can only say so much about this story without spoiling it, so I'm just going to say that... it is definitely memorable, more than Recommendable, but not at all the average christmassy story. Take that as it may.

Oh man, this was GOOD! This had all the vibes of Lucy Clifford's 'The New Mother'. Superbly unsettling, and the devastating uncertainty of one of Robert Aickman's finest. This hit all the right spots; well, almost. But it's great, for what it is, and for only 7 pages worth.
Should be public domain. But can't find it on Gutenberg. Bummer!

Esto pegó en todos los puntos correctos; bueno, casi. Pero es genial, por lo que es, y para sólo 7 páginas.

My first Ursula K. Le Guin, and hopefully the beginning of many more. I must admit I found the beginning quite tiresome and long-winded, but that savage murderpunch at the end sure made up for anything that could've been wrong. Doubly devastating, and a question that can never be fully answered. A short story guaranteed to shake your inner self, and leave ample food for thought. An interesting masterstroke for mere ten pages. Recommendable, maybe very.

Doblemente devastador, y una pregunta que no puede ser completamente respondida. Una historia corta garantizada de sacudir tu ser interior, y dejar mucho en qué pensar. After a long day of driving, Lucas Maybury, increasingly tired and partially lost, decides to rest, dine and spend the night Perversely Unsettling.
After a long day of driving, Lucas Maybury, increasingly tired and partially lost, decides to rest, dine and spend the night in a nearby Hospice, located not far from the main road. Maybury is pleasantly greeted and comfortably accommodated, yet it doesn't take him long to notice some strange atmosphere of uneasiness in the whole place, not to mention some very unsettling behavior in many of its guests, and staff! Mr. Faulker, head chief of the place, confidently reassures him that everything is fine— yet his impressions seems to suggest otherwise!
Well this was disturbing, to say the least. Certainly went in a direction I could've had never foreseen not in a million years. So unsettling; and you gotta love the horror Hospital/Asylum/Hospice setting. So unnerving and disconcerting. Gets me every single time.
I'm starting to really enjoy and appreciate Aickman's writings. The dread of the unknown— the undefinable horror of the strange. Normally I NEED my answers, badly, desperately, but with Aickman, I can live without; in fact, I think I 'm better off and rather prefer not knowing.
Looking forward to reading much more of the author, someday.
Después de un largo día conduciendo, Lucas Maybury, cada vez más cansado y parcialmente perdido, decide descansar, cenar y pasar la noche en un Hospicio cercano, situado no lejos de la carretera principal. Maybury es gratamente recibido y cómodamente alojado, pero no tarda mucho en notar una extraña atmósfera de inquietud en todo el lugar, sin mencionar un comportamiento muy inquietante en muchos de sus huéspedes ¡y del personal! El Señor Faulker, jefe del lugar, confiadamente le reasegura que todo está bien— ¡pero sus impresiones parecen sugerir lo contrario!
Bueno, esto sí que fue algo, por decir lo menos. Ciertamente fue en una dirección que nunca hubiera podido prever ni en un millón de años. Tan perturbador; y amo ese entorno del terror de Hospital/Asilo/Hospicio. Tan inquietante y desconcertante. Nunca falla.
Estoy empezando a apreciar y disfrutar bastante de los escritos de Aickman. El horror de lo desconocido— el indefinible terror de lo extraño. Normalmente NECESITO mis respuestas, mal, desesperadamente, pero con Aickman puedo vivir sin ellas; de hecho, creo que prefiero y estoy mejor sin saberlo.

Nice. Disturbing. A VERY rocky start. This felt like an interesting combination of the spookiness of one of MR James finest partly mixed with the tediousness of Lovecraft's labyrinthine vernacular. Not bad all in all, truth be told, but pretty far from an easy read. Still worth it. Looking forward to Carmilla. Soon.

Mirko Czentovic is the uncontested worldwide champion of Chess. His story fantastic, as a near brainless savant who stormed the game by surprise, beating every chess grand-master out there, and rising to glory from nowhere. Traveling on a boat to Buenos Aires for his next challenge, he engages in a friendly casual match with Dr. B, a mysterious unranked player from distant lands that hasn't played in decades. In the middle of the seas, just by mere chance, he may have finally met his greatest match.
This was great! Very good, actually makes me want to play chess again. Fabulous concept; a highly engaging plot, two very compelling characters and an almost flawless delivery. By far the best chess story I've ever read hands down, no contest. Then again the only one I've ever read as of today, so comparatively speaking I guess it was an easy win.
As a fairly good casual player of the game back in the day, I think I could enjoy this story at a different level. Yet I don't think you necessarily need to know Chess or even how to play it in order to enjoy it, but I do believe it can be better and more deeply appreciated by those who do. Still, solidly Recommendable, for any audience, player or not.

Mirko Czentovic es el indiscutible campeón mundial de ajedrez. Su historia fantástica, como un sabio sin cerebro que tomó el juego por sorpresa, venciendo a todos los grandes maestros de ajedrez, y ascendiendo a la gloria desde la nada. Viajando en un barco hacia Buenos Aires para su próximo desafío, se entabla en un amistoso partido casual con Dr. B, un misterioso jugador sin clasificación de tierras lejanas que no ha jugado en décadas. En medio de los mares, por mera casualidad, puede que finalmente haya encontrado a su mayor rival.
Esto estuvo genial! Muy bueno, de hecho me hace querer jugar ajedrez de nuevo. Fantástico concepto; una trama altamente atrapante, dos personajes muy cautivantes y una entrega casi perfecta. Por lejos la mejor historia de ajedrez que he leído jamás, sin lugar dudas. Aunque bueno, la única que he leído hasta el momento, así que comparativamente hablando supongo que fue una victoria fácil.
Como un decente jugador casual del juego allá en su día, creo que pude disfrutar esta historia en otro nivel. Sin embargo, no creo que sea estrictamente necesario saber ajedrez o incluso cómo jugarlo para poder disfrutarlo, pero sí creo que aquellos que lo conocen podrían llegar a apreciarlo mejor y más profundamente. Aún así, sólidamente recomendable, para cualquier auciencia, jugador o no.

Edith and Hans Nelson are a newlywed couple settling in Alaska, working the land and searching for gold. Along with Harkey, Dennin and Dutchy they form a hard-working and efficient partnership, gaining plenty of riches in very successful season. Then the unexpected occurs.
This was a great Gold Rush short story and one of the finest I’ve read by Jack London. I especially enjoyed the discourse about life and living by the expected and unexpected. Also cool learning about Alaska’s involvement during the Klondike Gold Rush era. The plot was decently plotted and well carried out. Never saw the unexpected coming; and enjoyed plenty all the buildup tension between Edith, Hans and Dennin until the final resolution.
Overall a fine short story, with memorable quotes and moments. An almost-fav. Recommendable.
Edith y Hans Nelson son una pareja de recién casados asentándose en Alaska, trabajando la tierra y buscando oro. Junto con Harkey, Dennin y Dutchy, forman una sociedad eficiente y trabajadora, obteniendo muchas riquezas en una temporada muy exitosa. Entonces ocurre lo inesperado.
Este fue un gran cuento corto de la Fiebre del Oro y uno de los mejores que he leído de Jack London. Disfruté especialmente el discurso sobre la vida y vivir según lo esperado e inesperado. También interesante aprender sobre la participación de Alaska durante la era de la Fiebre del Oro del Klondike. La trama estuvo decentemente diseñada y bien llevada a cabo. Nunca vi venir lo inesperado; y disfruté mucho de toda la tensión acumulada entre Edith, Hans y Dennin hasta la resolución final.
Dentro de todo una genial historia corta, con momentos y citas memorables. Una casi favorita. Recomendable.
