I did think the twists and turns were unexpected and fun. I didn't see most of them coming and managed to be relatively surprised. But, there was also a large number of very shallow, very mean, and unlikeable main characters. With a dash of fat phobia thrown in there. I think had the beginning portion not felt so slow and taken so long for me to read, the reveals at the end would have packed a bigger punch.
I am still going to give her 2022 release a try before I make any definitive conclusions....more

I feel like I haven't read a thriller in a really long time, and this is exactly what I needed at the moment. It was suspenseful, eerie, uncomfy, and mysterious. I wasn't really ever sure where the story was going to go, and we definitely ended up in a place I was not expecting. The audiobook was great with dual narration, and I would highly recommend.
I can't wait for Alyssa Cole to write more thrillers!...more

I eat these things up like candy, but never get a stomach ache from them. There were so many revelations in this installment about the inheritance and history of Avery and the Hawthorne boys, but I also feel like there is still so much we don't know. Every time on question is answered another half a dozen come out of no where to make me question everything. I am thrilled to see what is revealed to be true in the final installment. There is definitely a long game with this one.
Also, team Grayson, team Jameson, I have no idea anymore lol. I'm team everyone at this point lol. ...more

It always takes a turn into more romance or more speculative than I would like. This was one of the better that I have read. I enjoyed the pacing, atmosphere, and main character's arc. I really enjoyed the revenge/scavenger hunt aspect. A pretty solid mystery, although I did feel the mystery lacked a tad bit of suspense. The ending was a little too abrupt for me. I would have liked to see a more thorough resolution after everything that happened to the characters.
I also want to mention that this book has a death/murder of a pet cat. I don't understand why YA books in this genre feel the need to murder cats to prove a point, but it is really something that I find to be cheap and disgusting. I haven't come across an animal other than a cat involved in the scenes, and it makes me so sad that people see cats as such disposable creatures and plot devices. Any way, I just wanted to mention this in case anyone else has a pet cat that they love....more
I don't have any particularly strong feelings one way or the other towards this book. Traditionally, I prefer a bit more twists and turns 2.5/5 stars.
I don't have any particularly strong feelings one way or the other towards this book. Traditionally, I prefer a bit more twists and turns in my mystery/thriller books. A gimmick, if you will, and this was much more straightforward storytelling. I enjoyed the writing and will try another work from this author again. I wasn't overly enthralled with either of the books I've picked up from her, but I have enjoyed them enough to still have interest. I would have preferred just a little more intrigue to keep me invested in the story. The ending just seemed a little too obvious for me.
I listened to this on audiobook and much preferred that to the physical editing of this book. The book isn't exactly broken down into chapter, and I found that hard for me to stay engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The audiobook did a better job of segmenting the story into chapter-like sections, and it made it easier for me to follow along. Would definitely recommend....more
