While I don't take those books very seriously, there were some things that I couldn't dismiss.
pros: - book short and fast paced - acceptable main characters - I really liked the tension between Rune and Guideon - entertaining - ending that makes you want to read the second book
cons: - love triangle involving two brothers (COME ON) - Rune as the crimson moth was more tell than show since we didn't see her much in action - There some plot holes, for example, how can someone just randomly enter another person's house? (view spoiler)[ how didn't Rune lock her rooms so other servants don't enter? (hide spoiler)] - why not use magic for healing when the opportunity presented itself? (view spoiler)[why didn't she cast to save Alex's life using his blood? At least she couldn't said why she can't do that... (hide spoiler)] - love triangle resolved in the old fashioned way (view spoiler)[ of course, someone is going to die so Guideon and Rune can live with their choices, and then accepting to marry just like that? it was totally out of character (hide spoiler)] - teen hormones leading the main characters to make hasty decisions - Rune not thinking why there were dead bodies left by witches, since she wasn't the one doing it (I assume most of those), didn't she wonder if another witch was in the arena? - witch hate turning into genocide and Rune seemed oblivious to the reason behind the uprising
All in all, the book was fun and I'll be starting the next book soon before I lose interest. The story isn't new but it's a quick entertaining read. However, there were a lot of incidents that did not make sense or needed better explanation....more

I've read a fair share of books and yet, I have difficulties recalling a novel with more cringe moments. The first word that comes to my mind if someone asks me about this book is not unoriginal (which it is), boring (very much so), or over-descriptive (and yet managing to be non-descriptive at the same time). It is simply cringe. I won't be able to hear the word' darling' for a while without shifting my facial expressions.
I considered dropping this book around 60% because it felt repetitive and the plot wasn't progressing. I did not like the main characters, nor did I appreciate the stupid love triangle. I still managed to finish it and although my feelings shifted from hate to dislike, I still do not think it was worth finishing.

This book was a mix of what we found in the first two, military plots and battles plus political intrigue. Some reviews complained that some scenes felt like fillers, and I have to agree. I didn’t find the pace consistent and some scenes bored me while I couldn’t put the book down reading others. There were also some things that didn’t make much sense to me. While demons are supposed to sense each other, in one scene, a demon wrongly guessed the identity of the persons knocking on the door (although one had a demon - being vague on purpose). I also don’t really understand how Maurisk was able to do all that with a democratic government (supposedly) in place. It happened too fast for it to be realistic especially since not much time had passed since the events of the last book. The political scene was already fragile and everyone was supposed to be watching.
Overall, I’m glad that I decided to continue with this series. I have this bad habit of starting series and never finishing them when I read negative reviews of the sequels. Many reviews promised the second book to be different and it was. I’m not much of a fan of detailed long battles/military fantasy. This series, while not a favourite, is solid so far....more

I grew to care and love the characters in this series considerably. Froi is definitely my favorite and glad we saw him a lot in this book. However, and like many have already mentioned, for a book called "Quintana of Charyn" I definitely expected Quintana to have more spotlight. Instead, her role wasn't as a main as the rest.
This installment at the end was about tying the loose ends with the action part of the story ending around 80ish%. I didn't mind that at all honestly because I wanted more of the characters anyway. However, there was one thing that was supposed to be comical but it was honestly ridiculous (view spoiler)[Jasmina, for example, taking and hiding the letters. Yes because I am to believe that important correspondence for royals will be taken by a child left roaming around. And if that's the case, it's very irresponsible of the parents. Letters are mostly the only way of communication with other kingdoms. (hide spoiler)]
Anyhow, I felt a lot of emotions reading this book because of I am very fond of the characters now. I am glad I finally got to read the trilogy. I've always wanted to read it but it was never available in my book store. Even if I wanted to order, the covers are simply not pretty whatsoever, especially those of the second edition. I couldn't find the first edition anywhere.
Many young adults don't age well. This book is still as amazing as it was on its release in 2012. I would still highly recommend this trilogy to young-adult (and losing this term very loosely here) fantasy fans. It's definitely more complex than your usual YA....more

But.
Just like when it comes to almost every popular book out there, I caved. And I’m so glad I did.
I read the first 100 pages in one sitting. I randomly decided to read this book and then found myself unable to stop turning the page. I needed to know what’ll happen next… I also needed to sleep because I had to wake up early for work. But who cares about that when there’s this girl doing some dangerous things to be part of an “academy”? I can’t resist this trope.
And the book mostly didn’t slow down. It’s far from being perfect but it is so fun and hence my 4 stars rating.
I flew through this book while its previous took me weeks to finish. However, both are good in their own ways. Glad to hear that the third instalment I flew through this book while its previous took me weeks to finish. However, both are good in their own ways. It can be easily finished in one sitting. The premise was interesting and Lee certainly delivered. By the last page, I found myself wanting more of the characters. The ending was bittersweet and again, very suitable for the story line.
I highly enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to all fantasy fans. It's not the most complex. The characters don't necessarily stand out. However, it gives these magical vibes that transport you to another place at another time. ...more
