just wow. probably the best book I've read all year, and that is no exaggeration. this book was so well-crafted and lives in my head rent-free. would have liked to see more of the sci-fi elements being explored (but I get that it's not the point of the story and just a plot device. but still lol). definitely a must-read....more

overall this book was really charming and definitely a lighter read, but there are definitely moments that remind you that the world that this book takes place in is a modern dystopia. in some ways, it's impressive that the world outside of the naive narrator's eyes is characterized in this way, because it isn't the main focus of the story, and definitely reveals a strength of the writer. that being said, it felt like some of the themes that were expressed through the climax of the story and some of the more important reveals felt,, trite. love and humanity and how love makes us human is no doubt an important theme, but the AI setting and main character doesn't necessarily add an interesting twist to this idea, at least not one that hasn't been done before. interesting nonetheless, and a fun read to get to know the characters and what they do in their world, but this book is definitely a bit overhyped....more

'Mockingjay' picks up soon after where 'Catching Fire' left off, and it really jumps straight into the whole Katniss-as-a-rebel-leader arc. Almost the entire book is centered around the rebellion against the Capitol, and if you're still reading this review, I'm guessing you knew that already.
Contrary to popular opinion, I actually quite enjoyed the beginning of this book. No, there isn't a lot of action plot-wise, and there are barely any major clashes between the rebels and Snow's forces that are in the spotlight just yet, but I felt that it was actually really interesting to see how Katniss was slowly working her way back to being herself after going through so much.
It's something that isn't addressed in a lot of books, particularly books with a lot of non-stop action in them, but I feel that being able to go through so much and still 100% truthfully say "oH, yEaH, i'M uP fOr MoRe" is highly unrealistic. It was nice to see how Katniss was shown less like some sort of immortal rebel-leader goddess, and more like a seventeen-year-old who was forced to grow up too quickly.

Peeta, in this book, having lost much of himself due to the hijacking that he underwent while captured by the Capitol, loses a lot of the hero-worship that he seemed to display for Katniss in some of the earlier books, and honestly, good for him. It was quite sad to see how Peeta would silently puppy-dog eyes at Katniss while she was still hung up on Gale.
Speaking of Gale, I really don't have anything to say about him (just yet). His role in the books so far has been relatively passive, which is pretty annoying if you ask me. He literally just shows up to make love-triangle drama and then leaves. Thankfully, that changes in this book.
I've said it before but I'll say it again, because this can't be emphasized enough: I. LOVE. THE. SIDE. CHARACTERS. Seriously, they're amazing. The story would 0/10 not be the same without them, they deserve more love.

Now, I have to say, the plot was pretty dry for the first 50% or so of the book. I'll be the first to admit it, because I think I restarted the audiobook two or three times since I wasn't paying attention. That being said, it was also interesting to see all of the inner workings of the rebellion and District 13, and how certain issues were being built for the rest of the book.
The plot really only picks up after the halfway point, because that's around when Katniss herself gets involved with the rebellion's operations. Up until that point, it's mostly just discussions and logistics, and then the action really really starts.
I must say, this book, until the 75% mark, was actually quite excellent. I say this seriously. I genuinely enjoyed this book until about three-quarters of the way in, and was actually really excited for how everything was going to be resolved, expecting something interesting but also engaging - something that just works.
Having read the entirety of the Hunger Games trilogy, I can confidently say that this one is my favorite.

'Catching Fire' basically picks up where 'The Hunger Games' left off: our main characters have survived the Hunger Games, Katniss has just revealed to Peeta that she doesn't actually like him and it was all for show, which, ouch, Gale has entered the equation, and there's drama everywhere.
Seriously. You could probably smell it in the air.

I won't bore you with the details of what happened in the book, because I'm basically the last person on the planet to read this trilogy, but I will say this: it was nice to see how everything developed in this book, in comparison to the previous one.
For one, Peeta is not as bland as his name would suggest in this book. He's become more of an active character impacting both the plot and Katniss' character development in this book, rather than reprising his role as the awkward standing emoji (...more

i'm going to be honest here and say that i don't remember a thing that happened in this book, other than hating most of it except for the end and tentatively rating it a 2.5. probably the result of both a very inopportune reading slump while reading this, as well as literally a year passing since i read this book. SO. i will be rereading this. later. maybe. and will try to finish the series as well as write some semi-coherent reviews :D...more
