2021 reread: I fully intend to read this on paper eventually, but my first reread ended up being audio...again. I can't quite decide if Jim Dale's voice works for this story, or if someone else would be better. His female voices are not great, but his wizened old man timbre lends a certain kind of whimsy. Hmmm. Regardless, my original thoughts remain much the same: a book I find quite enjoyable and dreamlike, and difficult to describe without fluttering my hands around in vague designs because "whimsical" is the primary word I keep coming back to for this book.

Well, I had a more in-depth review for this, but it seems to have gotten deleted, along with the record that I read it at all. Bother.

Well, I listened to this on audio, and I loved it despite the audio narrator's deliberate pace (not generally a fan of older male narrators). It's one of those books that's stuck with my all year, and I wanted to re-read it almost immediately. It's just full of whimsy. What's inside the book is actually not much like the cover blurb suggests (it's not an epic battle between wizards...more like a delicate dance), but I still loved it.
