(2.5) This was a solid.... meh for me.

I was excited to pick up this psychological thriller because it has been getting some hype but it was a disappointment. Didn't care much for the characters, the twist was so obvious, the writing just okay. The only redeeming quality was the audiobook which made it possible for me to finish this book.

Unless you never read thrillers I don't think it's worth it.

Sarah Ooof, it does not. Keep the expectations as low as possible!

Erika its starts out pretty good, the the disappointment sets in

Mollie I saw the twist coming, but I did enjoy it!

message 4: by Ani (new) - rated it 1 star

Ani I just started this. Hopefully it's good

message 5: by Ani (new) - rated it 1 star

Ani Didn't enjoy it at all. Got to the point I was reading it for the sake of finishing it and not because I genuinely wanted to know what happened

Love-To-Read Booooring.

Stephanie Lives to Read Bummer to hear. I am waiting on my hold at the library. I may have to move onto the big book for March once it is chosen and save my time with this one.

message 8: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy Woods What a shame! I’d heard great things about it.

message 9: by Ani (new) - rated it 1 star

Ani I didn't enjoy it either. Only finished it as I rarely DNF a book

CassandraJulia Agree thought it was the least thrilling book I’ve read in a long time. V disappointed.

Linda Emily. So happy to find your review and thread. SUCH a meh. I thought it was just me. I read it fast to get it over. Too many of these books. Too transparent. Where are the original thinking authors with a story we haven't yet heard?

Charity Washko I agree. Although I wasn't expecting the twist to be what it was, I found myself totally unimpressed when I came to it. MEH, is exactly what I thought of this book when I finished.

Sketchbook Sorry, GRs, this is a terrific "psychological" story with an embedded mystery. If you didnt like this, I'd like to hear a title you did like ! That will explain all.

message 14: by Lea (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lea Carroll I totally agree with you

message 15: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary Bartelt I loved it- but to each their own-many 5 star ⭐️ books 📚 I found meh as well. Variety is the spice of life. ✌️

message 16: by Jantsen (new)

Jantsen Do you guys think it would be good for someone who hasn’t read a lot of thrillers? I’ve read The Kind Worth Killing and loved that but that’s really the only thriller I’ve read.

Sketchbook Stick with a conventional thriller like an Agatha Christie. Or Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Stacy Jantsen, I don’t read a lot of thrillers and I wasn’t thrilled about this one. Try “The Good Daughter” by Karin Slaughter. I really enjoyed that one.

I think...maybe. After you've read some REALLY GREAT thrillers and then come to this one, it's a bit disappointing. If you haven't read many, you might like it. I don't think it was horrible. It *was* an interesting story. Just not as intriguing as others I've read. I say go for it.

Sketchbook @19, what is the title, in your opine, of a "really great thriller?" I rate this one as really great. (You've only reviewed 8 books).

message 21: by Erika (new) - rated it 1 star

Erika Emily mentioned doing a video on goodreads comments. I hope she shows this guys whole goodreads page. it is a gold mine for r/iamverysmart

Dorothy It was entertaining and totally unexpected. However, it was not that well written, but I would read another book by this author for sure

message 23: by Mari (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mari 😱😱😱😱

Alexandra D. Couldn't agree more. Such a disappointment!

message 25: by Farren (new) - added it

Farren I was bored out of my mind and Evelyn Hugo was glaring at me from my bookcart so I quit a third into it. Alicia had only been present in a few pages at that point and I didn't care about Theo enough to trudge through it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Emmie Must How come you found the plot twist obvious???? Just Let me ask you something so that at least this makes Sense to me, did you watch the movie Fifth Sense and find the ending obvious as well? Or did you watch Star wars and find who Luke's father was obvious too? I just Can't believe how someone think that the most important part of the book was like whatever when actually that's what gave it a whole new meaning to the book

message 27: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Garcia Thank you! I'm in agreement.

Julie I have to agree about the writing quality. I actually checked part way through to see if it was self-published because the writing was so poor.

Beverley Turnquest I feel the same way

Erica Theresa YES! 100% agree. This was one of my most disappointing reads of the year so far

Juani It was honestly just mediocre for me.Some completely unknown thrillers have done so much better with similar plots.

Multijeweled halfway through I already knew what was happening... it’s “okay” just not “Girl on a Train” or “Gone Girl” great. It wasn’t a twist for me.

Annie Alexander Yep, very average writing. So full of cliches and I felt I trudged through it, was actually physically bored reading it. Only completed it for my book group homework 😂
How this got so much hype is beyond me.

message 34: by Peggy (new) - rated it 1 star

Peggy Coffey I hated "Girl on the train" so I should have known I wouldn't like this. I finished it but it wasn't my favorite.

Valerie At what point in the book did you guess the twist?? I usually am pretty good at guessing twists and I didn’t see this one coming until the page before it was revealed. It slowly dawned on me and then hit me like a ton if bricks! So much fun!! Also throughout the book I was going through every possible scenario in my mind and it never occurred to me. When did you know?

Kenzie Gallaher Theo’s a creep. And the plot twist become pretty obvious halfway through the book. Oh man.

Mariela I just finished listening the the audio book and I must agree with you. Even the audiobook was boring at times. I picked up a little at the very end but I didn’t really care much for the story, characters and execution of the book.

Emily I could not agree more (aside from the audiobook comment, as I read the hardcover). Solid meh, lots of telegraphing of the twist, and Theo is indeed a creep.

Sameer Chandra Alicia's diary entries were what made me lose interest in the story. Who in their right mind would keep writing a diary when an intruder is trying to break inside the house?

message 40: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma Nelson This is my favourite thread ever, I enjoyed reading it more than i liked reading the story!

This book is SO meh. Cliche and affected. A therapist that loses his mind at his first crisis and shows up at HIS therapists house late at night? Give me strength. And following a man that catches multiple buses - are we just supposed to ignore the impossible logistics of doing that surreptitiously?! How awkward would standing at the second or third bus stop be? Just no. Solid pass from me.

Rashi This was so bloody predictable I am amazed at how stupid people can be not to guess the “twist”.

Richard Harris Glad Im not the only one! Definitely started well but never ever created the tension or drama I was hoping for. And I saw the twist coming too. Im a little shocked this was such a bestseller. So little imagery for a thriller. I never felt uncomfortable or drawn in, especially to the main characters. Ho hum. On to the next one!

Angie I'm in page 19 and I already have an idea of what the plot twist is.
I usually try to equally read the positive and not so positive reviews. I've been waiting for this book for so long on loan from my library that I least have to give it a shot. Appreciate all the reviews.

Laurie Morgan I am definitely surprised by so many negative comments. I read a lot of thrillers and thoroughly enjoyed this one. To me, it was definitely worth waiting for from my library! So to each his own, I suppose.

message 45: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Holloway I completely agree that this was not great. The twist was interesting, although I guessed it before the big reveal. I just did not enjoy the characters at all, and only kept reading to get answers. I’m quite annoyed by all the good reviews!

Diane I totally agree! I kept hearing about how good it is and I struggled to finish it, thinking it would eventually get better. It did not. Such a boring book.

Connie Soap opera drama

Ashley What I loved this book! I did not see the ending coming. Like att all! Looooved it.

Ashley Also not cool to call people stupid for not thinking the way you do Rashi. Just saying don't be a dick.

Carina Ashley, I’m with you! Loved it! Did not see that end coming! #Rashidontbeadick
