I'm sorry about not getting back to this as soon s I said I would. Sadly I pretty much slowly lost most interest in the book I has an interesting (if not new) premise. The problem was that while the experiences of our disowned prince are fairly absorbing, the story telling starts out slow and then decelerated.... a lot.
We get to hear so much about his troubles, and suffer allll his angst.
So, try it yourself, hope you enjoy it.

I'd say that if you thought book 1 was 3 stars you should at least give book 2 a shot. Between book 1 and 2 he learned to outline and it's better paced and you get more of the epic space opera experience. It's quite a step up. If book 2 doesn't do it for ya then I'd say maybe it's not for you. Been following your reviews for a long time and feel like I know your taste a bit so I feel pretty good about recommending book 2.

Very much agree with you, it was difficult to finish book 1; I gave book 2 a try but DNF at 20%.
I agree with with you Mike. The premise was good, even with so many elements taken by other novels, but for me it was boring because the story is too slow, too many digressions and the plot gives to me expectations hardly will be satisfied, at least for all this book and maybe the next. There could be other ten books from the young man in this book and the old man that writes.
