A steel (metal) ruler! I just bought one from a local hardware store and it's just a great cutting guide and measurement tool. An upgrade from that would be a carpenter's square (or whatever you call them in English).
PS. This is the first time I'm commenting on one of your video's. I've been watching for a while now, although mostly watching older video's. I have to say I really like your video's, even though I'm more into tooling, I still really enjoy watching. You're really good at vlogging and editing which makes watching so much more fun but I really appreciate how you show how you can make a business in leathercraft. I myself got interested in leathercraft a few years ago already, but have been very slow with it. I'm still a student and I lack the time and mostly the budget. Because even though beginner tools are not the most expensive ones, you really soon want more and the leather is expensive of course. Aside from that, I'm from The Netherlands where you can't just walk into a leathercraft store, unfortunately. Many things must be ordered from abroad. I hope to finish my thesis and education soon and after that, I want to spend more time getting proficient in leathercraft. Whether it will remain a hobby besides another job or become more of a job for me too (maybe even including vlogging, love the makervloggery initiative!), I don't know yet, but you've definitely gotten me interested in the latter!

Go through about 10 vids without full explanation of what the purpose of everything is and it's actual applications, and not just what you use it for. Getting into leather working is a lot easier than people might think. I wanted to try some things out before spending a lot of money on tools. Before I bought the diamond chisels for stitching I used a tiny nail and measured out each hole. Don’t recommend it but doable. My first burnishing tool was the bottom of a Dr Pepper bottle. Technically worked.

I’ve been trying to study on my own but no luck till magically my bio dad started his own leather work company and I asked him for help and he send me a box of 160 pieces for leather making. Thank you for the "how to use" and "why" for each tool! Educational on its own. After making several bicycle tool boxes, I now know how to use my edge beveler and a wood slicker (have to buy one!) to finish off the edges! .

Haven't even done my first piece yet, my plans are making a few bags for my bike, walked into the Harley shop, and seen a very simple leather bag, I mean very very simple, for 350 bucks. I'm a steel rigger and have been planning on making my own workman's tool belt. I've never done leatherwork before so am clueless where to start. Your video is great. It quickly gives a novice understanding of the purpose behind each tool, along with tips and demonstrations. And the examples of your own work in the background is wonderful. I took up leather work as part of my new knife making hobby. I was fortunate that I lived near a Tandy store and they had a really good starter class on Saturdays. I took the class cuz they didn't have RUclips videos with ole George Hurst back then, heck they didn't have an internet back then lol. It was very helpful and I made my first knife sheath that turned out really nice. You're giving some good advice so good job. I still learn new stuff. I found stitching chisels are good for making a straight line and for thin leather, but they're really not suitable for much over 10 oz of thickness although they're better than overstitch wheels for marking. I made a system for getting all my holes to line up on my knife sheaths cuz with going through 3 layers of heavy leather I don't like the way drilled holes look.
Many people want to change their life by taking up a craft. A good craftsman like you who inspires people to make that first step, comes before any of the tools on that list above.

You showed stitching needles while stating harness needles. I completely agree that harness needles are the way to go. I've lost track of how many stitching needles that I've broken (always at the eye). The harness needles are more difficult to thread, but they don't break. If you stick with lightweight leather, stitching needles are fine, but if you are working with heavy leather, count on breaking several. This is a good list. I didn't start out with a head knife, and the longer I went without one, the harder it was to talk myself into getting one. But they are worth getting, and if is on a "start up" list you won't have to talk yourself into getting one, and you'll have it at hand from the start. No depriving yourself of the benefits of a head knife.
When I first started doing leatherwork. i bought a leatherwork manual. I consider this book the bible of leathercrafting. It teaches you everything you want to k now about leathercrafting. including leather stamping. The book is by Al Stohlman. Through the years I have bought Al Stohlman books along with a subscription to Leathercrafters magazine.Your videos are very helpful, but I had to add this comment in case there were some people who want to learn how to leather stamping. I agree with you on the basics you have mentioned but also if you are going to learn how to do leather stamping start out small such as buying the basic 7 stamping set friom Tandy. This way you truly learn whether you want to do this or not.

As I have become a little more advanced in my leather crafting I have wanted to invest in a round knife but they are a pricey Item .I have been using a vintage shoemaker/cobbler's knife I got of ebay from the Ukraine for 20 bucks it is awesome ...You have such amazing tools! Great video! thanks
Well, certainly a BIGA thanks for mentioning not to use a regular metal hammer, because I haven’t started my project yet and it’s my very first time working with leather. When I went to Tandy Leather, the guy that was working, was the only person that was there and their system was down for ringing up customers. So, he was not available for Q&A for someone who needed the guidance that I did, due to running back/forth. I only bought a needle, thread and the tool for the holes with the diamond edge! 🥴 I didn’t think about the corners being new to this, but I’m sure having a design background, etc., I can wing it 👍🏽👍🏽
Very practical advice, you explain it in a way that makes you see why you need this 2 pronger too (for around the corner). I learn a lot from your videos as complete beginner

Isn't many leather workers in my area, and this video sold me on going to get some basic tools and trying It my self. Love your videos keep it up!

When I first started doing leatherwork. i bought a leatherwork manual. I consider this book the bible of leathercrafting. It teaches you everything you want to k now about leathercrafting. including leather stamping. The book is by Al Stohlman. Through the years I have bought Al Stohlman books along with a subscription to Leathercrafters magazine.Your videos are very helpful, but I had to add this comment in case there were some people who want to learn how to leather stamping. I agree with you on the basics you have mentioned but also if you are going to learn how to do leather stamping start out small such as buying the basic 7 stamping set friom Tandy. This way you truly learn whether you want to do this or not.

As I have become a little more advanced in my leather crafting I have wanted to invest in a round knife but they are a pricey Item .I have been using a vintage shoemaker/cobbler's knife I got of ebay from the Ukraine for 20 bucks it is awesome ...You have such amazing tools! Great video! thanks
Well, certainly a BIGA thanks for mentioning not to use a regular metal hammer, because I haven’t started my project yet and it’s my very first time working with leather. When I went to Tandy Leather, the guy that was working, was the only person that was there and their system was down for ringing up customers. So, he was not available for Q&A for someone who needed the guidance that I did, due to running back/forth. I only bought a needle, thread and the tool for the holes with the diamond edge! 🥴 I didn’t think about the corners being new to this, but I’m sure having a design background, etc., I can wing it 👍🏽👍🏽
