another great episode, so we’re back to the first opening now i guess, hope we’re not done with the other opening yet though since it was really nice… first off, why the heck does their school have a torture club lmao. that katsuno guy and nami are really annoying, don't get why they wanna know about mai and stuff so much.

the fourth-wall breaking in this anime is pretty interesting and funny. it was quite well done and the stuff with them talking about themselves nearly dying and the copyright infringement with renkan tenshinyaku and mai looking like other things when she was a dragon. also, its cool how the transformation scenes with mai always have the super nice animation and stuff.

it was also kinda strange how everyone calls mc girl a fujoshi when she’s pretty much the opposite of what a fujoshi is lol

The anime is really very strange, it seems that it wants to make jokes like gintama does, but the cast is not as charismatic as in gintama and I think that is one of the problems that anime has. But hey, I'll keep watching, if it surprises me.

Mai was cute again, she's so adorable.

Lol torture club's a thing? How have they not been arrested yet.

Mai turned into a salamander. It was already obvious that she could change her personality according to the type of blood she drinks but it looks like if the blood is too strong she'll even change her form like this time.

In terms of peak madness and story escalation, this eps hits it out the ball park! Loving this show so far, and all the zany characters add that extra spice to the visuals.

Along tons of other references (for example there should be a big Yatterman fan in the writers room) a long sequence pointing the second Patlabor movie.

Oshii had better be on very good terms with Rumiko Takahashi because this episode ripped off directly several Urusei Yatsura TV episodes (and the first UY Movie) pretty much scene for scene. Of course, Oshii directed those original UY episodes, so I guess that it's fair enough that he re-uses them here. LOL

Unsurprisingly, the others have caught onto what Mai can potentially be...the biggest culprit: Dance Club member Nami.

OH yes, I see the similarity in art styles.

The Torture Club is NOT one I'd want to be in, and their draw is towards Nami. Kasuno of the Karate Club...of course, plays along for the fun, NOT. Other than the interrogation about Mai, things are looking grim from Bamba's side.

Those 4th wall breaks always gets me LMAOing hard though, more than just abridged versions.

As always, the coagulation consumption leads Mai to transform...into a salamander, the desire of Dr. Chihiro.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully it's not copyright infringed.

Jokes abound for this series, and it's a treat.

Okay, this episode was pretty good. The show finally hits its stride with its story, humor and animation.

Mitsugu couldn't hide Mai anymore, especially with Nami, the least eccentric and thus the biggest threat, making an investigation. What ensues are hijinks that gets dragon blood involved.

The humor is definitely a step up: thanks to the plot advancing, the humor from these eccentric characters bouncing together is sparkier and more lively. The Torture Club was a bit much IMO, but otherwise everything else was funny enough: I especially liked the doctor's overlong history with her Walter Matthau lover and her refusing responsibility for everything at the end.

The split-screen technique is used pretty nicely, with the characters using each of their screen for full humor. Zooms, colliding screen, and at the end a double-take sequence.

All in all, I enjoyed this episode a great deal.

Kaoru still best

Can Katsuno just stfu

Lmfao, a homage to the entire JASDF sequence from Patlabor 2 (and self-censored Kaiju movie references). It does go deeper as Mai transforms into a dragon ("Wyvern" was the codename used in the Patlabor 2 scene).

This is so incredibly zany and fun. Totally flying under the radar this season. I don't get why some people think this is anime is hard to understand? It's a comedy. Is it maybe the all the anime and video game references that fly by them?

I don't think the problem is that is hard to understand. I believe the problem has to do more with the type of comedy (slapstick, obscure parody). Many aren't finding the comedy in this show to be particularly funny or engaging. To be fair, even the Japanese aren't really into this series for some reason.

All in all, the series isn't clicking as a comedy for many therefore the lack of interest and buzz.

The bolded bit is more or less my point. Maybe Oshii and his writing team are referencing a lot of series/games/manga that are decades old (showing their age I guess as am I of course, lol) that are perhaps not relevant to the contemporary viewer? I suppose for us that watched Urusei Yatsura and Patlabor on television, some of this stuff is more to our tastes.

This is one of the best anime of the season. The story and animation are my favourite. I love how wacky and random it is. It's also filled with a ton of references, everyone should give it a try.

The dragon looks super cool too!! MORE DRAGONS PLEASE!

I knew that JSDAF scene felt familiar. Having watched Patlabor 2 a while back, I can definitely see the similarities.

However, the humor in this series isn't really clicking for me. I get that a lot of it is based on references and nuances aimed directly at Japanese viewers but even the character interactions aren't really working for me, which is weird because Gosenzo-Sama Banbanzai! (written and directed by the same writer as this) had some great interactions between its characters, which is what made me like it in the first place.

Also, if Jinko is such a stickler for the rules, how the hell is the Torture Club even allowed, much less functional ?
