The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver is one of the group reads for Sept/Oct.

Jannene will lead the discussion since it was her nomination.

I loved this book and it's a great start to one of my favorite series. Lots of forensic details and it really gets into the heads of the characters involved.

message 3: by Ann (new)

Ann | 151 comments I totally agree with Kathryn. The Bone Collector is a great book & movie. I just finished reading The Coffin Dancer, 2nd in the series, and loved it too. It will be one of my favorite series!

Jannene | 775 comments Hi everyone!

I'm so excited this won the nomination. I've had it on my shelf forever. I will be reading it for the first time and this is a new author for me.

message 5: by Bill (new)

Bill I bought the book the day I was going to see the movie and read the first chapter or two before it started. I enjoyed both. I do wish they'd do another Lincoln Rhymes movie. The books are indeed excellent.

I agree, Bill. Another movie would be great. Deaver always picks a completely different subject for each of the books in this series, often involving something pertinent to today's society. I'm never disappointed.

message 7: by Carmen (new)

Carmen | 2477 comments I've never read any of his books and I haven't seen the movie for this one either. (It's the one with Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington, right?)

i guess now I'll have to go out and get the book so I can join in the discussion. I've never been in a "Bookclub" before. So I hope everyone bears with me if I have no clue as to what I'm doing. (Trust me, that happens a lot!) : D

message 8: by Bill (new)

Bill All you have to do, Carmen, is provide your thoughts/ questions on what you're reading. Be careful though as you read the comments, you might get some spoilerish type thoughts from folks. :0) Enjoy!

You won't be disappointed Jannene. This is one of my very favorite series and Deaver cannot write them fast enough for me! Enjoy

message 10: by Ann (new)

Ann | 10 comments Deaver is a great writer, and I love it that each book examines a current issue. Can't wait to get started on this one!

message 11: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer E | 11 comments I really enjoyed the movie so I've decided to give the book a try!

message 12: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments Today is the day we start! I finished Bones to Ashes (Temperance Brennan, #10) by Kathy Reichs yesterday. I still have one book that I am working on but I will start this one too. I liked the movie but thankfully I don't remember it too well. I wouldn't want it to taint my decision on the book.

Ann | 151 comments Thank you Bill, for beautifully handling the Book vs. Movie thing. I have to admit, the movie is one of my very top favorites, but I recently learned that the movie was based on a book!!!!!! So dumb, sometimes. After putting it together though, I instantly downloaded the ENTIRE SERIES to my NOOK. Yes, I said "NOOK". Am I the only one who doesn't read on a Kindle? Please don't kick me out of the group! I really like it here!=) The Coffin DancerJeffery Deaver I recently read the next in the series in August and Loved it. Read on!

I too have a nook (color) and read on it. :)

Ann | 151 comments Oh, good. Thank you Jannene. I feel much better!:)

message 17: by Gary (new)

Gary Vassallo | 3 comments Having already read other Lincoln Rhyme novels, I am really enjoying the development of his character as well as the main plot.

message 18: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I am already to chapter 5. It is pretty interesting so far.

message 19: by VickiLee (new)

VickiLee | 483 comments What really captured me in The Bone Collector was Rhymes set determination to control his own life. The relationship with Sacks, and how it develops as she walks the crime scene grid and become the eyes and ears of Rhymes is superb, and allows us, as readers, to understand how intensely these two characters read each other. The movie is so far from the essence of the novel that I simply see it as another suspense film, not a close replica of a fine novel.

I agree with you about getting to know these characters and why they are the way they are. I enjoyed the movie, which I watched first, but you can never get a feel for things the way that you do when you read a book. The rest of the series just builds on what is created in this first book.

I don't read on a Kindle or Nook . . . hardcover books for me. I may be one of the last . . .

message 22: by Tay (new)

Tay | 261 comments This is probably Deaver's best book. All of his Lincoln Rhyme novels are full of twists and turns. Sometimes too much but they are enjoyable nonetheless.

Ann - You're definitely not the only person using a Kindle or Nook. I'm not one who does mind you. My daughter by me a,... um.. Kobo? last year for Xmas, but she graciously let me return it for book credit, which I used happily. I'm sure someday I'll have to switch, but i've got over 400 books on my shelves that haven't been read yet, so it shouldn't have to be any time soon.. :0).. On the subject of Lincoln Rhymes, I've read pretty well all of the series, but still have a couple to read and am looking forward to them. It's such an excellent series and The Bone Collector was an excellent introduction to the characters, types of crimes they are involved with, etc. Loved it.

message 24: by Kit (new)

Kit Kat If this is book is filled with twists and turns, I will definitely love it! I love books that make you surprised and on the edge of your seat. I like it so far, though I have only read the first chapter.

That's one of the things I like most about this series. There are plenty of twists and turns and neither my husband nor I have figured out the ending of any of them.

message 26: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I have to admit that all of the contractions are driving me nuts. It seems like there is at least one or two for every sentence.

message 27: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisaspoot) I was a bit disappointed, but I will certainly try more of Deaver's books.

message 28: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 451 comments I love Lincoln Rhyme! A bit Sherlock, a touch Perry Mason, and a mind like Nero Wolfe! I've read them all. Some are a little slow, but I have to know about the romance and possible operation.

message 29: by Aliena (new)

Aliena (alienat) I love the book and I love Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sacks. They have to be one of my favorite duos. I loved the suspense in this book, I was biting my nails all the way through. And I'm always one for shocking moments, which were plenty for me. I really need to catch up with the latest books in the series.

message 30: by Jannene (last edited Sep 22, 2013 12:08AM) (new)

Jannene | 775 comments Almost done. Did you find the plot believable? Who was your favorite character and why? Would you read other Lincoln books?

message 31: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments Finished. It was a good book. I liked Sachs the best because she had grit. She didn't hold back what she was thinking. She was honest and caring.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished rereading the Bone Collector. my opinion didn't change, it is a fun page turner but not one of my favorites. a good group read, it had something for almost everyone.

message 33: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 103 comments I gave it four stars - the book is excellent, but the plot is a bit convoluted and needlessly complicated. Still, I enjoyed the book better than the movie, which seemed to gloss over the plot just to show Angelina Jolie. Worthy start of the Rhyme series!

The movie is one of my top favourites, too. I'm curious about the book, though. I'm starting today.

As for the reading device, I read nice opinions about Nook on forums.

I read on an Acer tablet PC; sometimes I use my smart phone or even the laptop. I don't see much difference once I get immersed in a book.

message 35: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I felt the book was a lot better than the movie. I wish I had read the book first then watched the movie. I feel Martyn was spot on saying that the movie glossed over the plot.

message 36: by Dany (new)

Dany (danyspike) I loved this book. I've been wanting to read it for a long time (I hadn't even wanted to see the movie, in order to avoid spoilers) and it really got me from page one. Loved all the forensic details and the gore descriptions, even if they made me scream out loud sometimes :)
I also liked how they treated the issue of euthanasia, not only regarding Lyncoln, bus as a general principle. It's a current topic and it's good for discussion.

message 37: by Izzy (new)

Izzy Holmes | 28 comments Finished the book for the second time and it was just as enjoyable. Found that I wanted Rhyme and Sachs to apprehend the killer in the first few chapters it was a page turner and I also feel it was better than the movie. Which was the next book in the series?

message 38: by Bill (new)

Bill The Coffin Dancer is the next in the Lincoln Rhymes' series, Izzy. As I recall, also excellent.

message 39: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I don't have that one. I have The Empty Chair. Can you read them out of order?

message 40: by Bill (new)

Bill There are ongoing storylines dealing with Lincoln and Amelia, but I think the basic mysteries can be read on their own... The Empty Chair follows The Coffin Dancer. :0)

message 41: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (xoxoshannon1979) | 263 comments I am going buy this off ebay it might be next month before i can read it. I Saw the movie and loved it never knew it was base on a book ;)

message 42: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 451 comments This is the rare occasion where the movie lives up to the book. Denzel Washington as Lincoln and Angelina Jolie. Watching her "walk the grid" was more terrifying than reading the book. I've read the rest of the Lincoln Rhyme books. It would make a great TV series.

Pcdoctorswr | 35 comments Just completed the first book. Have just purchased the other 9 books in the series and plan on reading them in order.

message 45: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I read this so many years ago, I can remember few details. And I have not seen the film. I thought it was very inventive (and slightly preposterous) to have a paralyzed detective. What police agency would keep him on?

But the book was quite gripping and quite claustrophobic in places. I'll bet Denzel did a great job, but I'm not too sure of Angelina Jolie as Amelia.
