Hyara: A Medieval Fantasy Roleplay discussion

"Serpent's Den" Serves as a meeting place for a special group of magicians who use their magic for the good of Hyara, known as the Society of the Silver Serpent.

Members of the Society of the Silver Serpent wear special rings. The rings are made of two separate rings, one of silver, created by the elves, and the other of gold, forged by the humans. There is also a gem, mined and cut by the dwarves. These rings symbolize the pact between the three species who first founded the Society. Gems are decided by the month of each member's birth.

Javin sat in a leather armchair with his feet on his desk, fast asleep and oblivious to world. One arm hung limpy at his side, the other over his chest. A heavy tome threatened to fall off the edge should he move his boot. A scroll laid in his lap. Candles dripped wax all around him.

After getting Yfandes settled after making sure to direct the stable hands to leave his the stall door unlocked and to stay away. She entered the establishment quietly making sure her protections were up. She came to a door and knocked firmly.

Javin woke with a start and the tome hit the floor with a heavy thud. A few loose pages fluttered out. Jason rubbed his eyes and let out a yawn. "Gimme a second." He called, and threw on his floor length black leather duster. Then with a flick of his wrist, the door flowed with a faint sapphire-colored light and setting inward on its hinges. "Sorry. Pardon the mess." He absentmindedly said and picked up the tome.He tucked it under his arm and began to pick up the pages.

She entered with caution her Whites gave off a ghost like appearance in the lighting as she took in the room . "For give the intrusion... " She swept a pale hand through her messy raven-silver hair. "I'm Herald Vanyel and it was required that I come here." She said gently with a smile. "Yfandes, sends his greetings and hopes that maybe later you'd come visit him in the field. after he's rested." She then noticed the pages on the floor. "Let me help you...." She started to move but paused.

((Sorry for any typos. I'm usually pretty good at catching them, but you know how phones are. ))

"No no. I don't mind. It's a pleasure to meet you, fair Vanyel." Javi stammered, still distracted. "Tell Yfandes I'll be there." When she offered to help he waved his hand. "No no. That's not..." He paused noticing get silence. "What's wrong?"

(Yes I do and it's ok.)

Vanyel blinked and blushed. "I'm not sure. I just got a feeling as if we're being watched." She told Javi. "Is that normal?" She sighed. "Anyways, let me help you." She started picking up pages. "Yfandes, says he's honored.... "She chuckled. "Oh, he keeps trying to warn the groomers to stay away. He nipped one because they tried to lock him in...." She shook her head. "I take it Companions don't visit often?" She then asked Javi.

"Um... no? I don't think so..." Javin looked up, a bit taken aback, and more than a bit confused. What is this woman speaking of? He asked himself. Then he asked bluntly. "Are you telepathically linked to a horse?" He pointed to his temple tactlessly.

"Yes in an odd sense." Vanyel replied. "Yfandes, is a Companion, which is an otherworldly creature that resembles a magnificent snow-white horse that has the same intelligence as a human." She explained. "When you are Chosen, you become a Herald or Herald-Mage and most who are chosen are uniquely gifted. Every one chosen can mindspeak with their Companion" She watched his reaction carefully. "Does that help?"

"Yeah." Javin said slowly taking in the information. He thought of the encyclopedia he kept of Hyara. He often wondered how complete it was. The world was a larger place than he'd imagined. "It's a bit odd to be honest. So what can you do?"

(You are the first to react to the mindspeak between Vanyel and Yfandes.)

"Well..." Vanyel thought a moment. "The first gift that showed up was the Bardic gift. After I was at the Bardic and Heraldic Collegium, my other gifts suddenly appeared." She said then took a breath. "As it turns out I can MindSpeak, Mage-gift, Farsight, Firestarting, Empathy, and Fetching......" She paused and sighed. "I know it's overwhelming."

((I guess they just assume that because it's a fantasy world and things like Pegasi and unicorns exist that it's not surprising for anyone to have telepathy. ))
Javin had very little idea of what any of that meant, but one word did resonate in his mind. "Firestarting? You mean like this?" He snapped his fingers and a tongue of blue flame sprung to life and danced in his palm.

Vanyel smiled. "Yes, exactly." She said. "But also on the extreme...." She smiled. "I could explain the other gifts if you like........ It was had for me to understand it all at first. Apparently it's rare to have all these gifts at the same time.

(Sorry it's took me so long to post.)

Javin, his interest now piqued to its fullest nodded. "Please." Even as a member of the Silver Serpents, he was fascinated by new forms of magic. The few books he had in his possession were dusty, despite him having read them cover to cover several times and nearly memorizing every word, and the writing was dry as a bone. The opportunity to hear a first hand account did not come often.

"I know most of it will sound strange but I will do my best." Vanyel said. "I can only tell you of my own gifts and a few that I've seen." She thought a moment. "I came in to my Bardic gift at a young age. I was sent from the Pelagir Hills to the Bardic Collegium in the city of Haven in the kingdome Valdemar. They preceded to test me and said I had the true Bardic gift. That meant that I was not only able to create, composed original music, along with playing it.. I could projected my gift of Empathy to manipulate an audience’s mood through music so they may truly feel what I was playing." She told him.

"So that could be used to influence someone's disposition toward you or a situation?" Javin said, thinking he had some clue now as to how it worked. "Or is it purely for entertainment purposes?"

"Yes, it could be used that way, but it is actually used to enhance the preformance for the audience. Or it has been used during healing depending on the injury." Vanyel said. "When the gift or talent shows, the person is sent to the Collegium to be tested and trained."

Javin didn't really want to drag himself into a longwinded argument, but he found fault with what she was saying. "Shouldn't healing be it's primary purpose if it can be used that way?" He said naively. "And if you have to tell people what to think of your art, is it a genuine reflection of your skill? I mean, not to suggest you aren't good, but..." He shrugged.

"It's completely ok really." Vanyel said. "I'll try to explain....... In most cases if the Bardic gift is using during healing the one doing it has the healing gift in which they can heal the mind." Which are very few." She continued to explained. "As for the impact of your audience when you are performing. You project you Empathy so that they may feel some of your emotion to enhance the song but so the performer can feel the emotions of the audience. The danger is that Empathy goes both way." She thought a moment. "I may have the Bardic gift and Empathy but my gift in heal are very minor. It isn't rare for a healer to have Empathy and some sort of Bardic gift but it's rare for someone to be the healer of the mind with the other and they are usually among the Tayledras in the Pelagir Hill..... " She finished hoping this explained it" She then suddenly said. "It was one of my brother's gifts....." Her eyes went wide and she took a slow breath.

As she spoke, Javin found what she was saying very interesting. He was about to ask more questions, such as what the Tayledras were, when she mentioned her brother suddenly.
"What happened to your brother?" Javin said, shocked by this revelation. "Is he... you know... dead?"

((Javin may or may not suffer from Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome, an all too common condition which causes the victim to say what ever comes to mind, often when least appropriate, and always with no consideration of the consequences or the feelings of those addressed by the victim in saying whatever is on their mind.))

(Vanyel and Yfandes do it to, so I understand.)

Vanyel fought a moment to lock down her emotions and took another breath. "Yes, we were fairly young when it happened." She said. "He's gifts were very strong and he was one of the few that could Mind Heal." She told Javin. "It was also the first time that a Tayledras was in Haven."

"I'm so sorry." Javin said awkwardly. He was sure it was the right thing to say, he meant it sincerely, but it still seemed hollow. After an even more awkward pause, he asked. "What's a Tayledras?"

" Tayledras are also known as the Hawk Brothers and they are hidden in Pelagir Hill that's their home." Vanyel said thankful for the distraction. "They were once a part of the Shin'a'in Clans but broke away to continue their belief and the use of magic. There are many who are gifted enough to connect with the natural land lines." And almost no one on the outside has had that ability. She thought a moment. "Except maybe three..."

"Wow. That's... crazy." Javin said. "Who were the three in question? "

(It's ok. I understand completely but my absences are usually because chaos tends to feel like I need to take a trip to crazy town while he rides shotgun)

"Yep. Well the three includes my twin brother, Moonwind, my namesake, Herald Vanyel Ashkevron, and me. There's all kinds of stories about Vanyel Ashkevron in our history." she replied.

"Really?" Javin was intrigued. "What did he do?"

(I am sorry that I haven't post. I've had some issues involving family, I've also been in and out of the hospital. I will post as soon as I can. Once again I'm very sorry.)

I want to apologize for abandoning this roleplay. Because of things that have accrued I will not be continuing for now. I have also withdrawn my character because of this. Once again I apologize for not letting you know. I will try to return at some point. Thank you for understanding.

"Herald-Mage Ashkevron, was a one of the few Herald-Mages of his time." Vanyel replied. "He build a magical alert system that would let him and the other Herald-Mages know if there were other mages in Valdemar. It was also used to keep an eye on them." She told him.

"Due to a lack of trust, or for collaborative reasons?" Javin asked. He assumed he knew the answer, as he doubted Vanyel would hold or at least cast her own namesake in a negative light, but it didn't hurt to be clear.

(I promise I will post to this and the other one. I've just had a bit of chaos that had kept me from posting.)

"Both actually." Vanyel replied. "After they were alerted, they would check it to see if the intentions of said mage was. It was a way of protecting the people. He did always seem to have to hold the world on his shoulders..." She paused. "But there were a few glitches after he died...." She shrugged. "Anyway, all of that is an even longer story..." She smiled. "And to think, he didn't start out as a Herald or Mage... Let along both...." She gave a chuckle. "He originally sent to Haven to be turned into a proper man...."

"Bah. Etiquette." Javin scoffed in response to the last statement. "You don't suppose if I made some tea for us I could hear said story?" He snapped his fingers and blue fire begin to flicker in the fireplace; a pot hung over the coals.

"Tea sounds very nice." Vanyel replied with a chuckle. "And I don't mind at all." She smiled. "It's one of my favorite stories."

(Mew?)

After a few moments, when the out began to whistle, Javin floated it off the coals and over to the desk between himself and Vanyel. He poured two cups and asked, "Sugar, cream, or honey? And can I interest you in anything to eat?"

He prepared his mind for the story, determined to leave his questions until the end.
