Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Chapters 10-19
Jessie (#3) sends three photos of Jessica #2 at the bank withdrawing all of her lottery money. She was disguised. Liam points out she has no burn scar on her wrist like Jessica has from her time in the LOT (land of Todd)
Jessica contacts another probable victim on Facebook, JJ - an army vet in Philadelphia who earned millions as a chef on YouTube; and continues texting J#2 who texts back, "you can't catch me"
##11##
Jessica meets Jessie at a high gorge and waterfall. They take a steep and dangerous hike where Jessica tells her about JJ and convinces Jessie to go along to meet JJ in Philly. Liam heads back to work another case.
##12##
Jessica's burn scar is disturbing, Todd's initials - burned on their arm in a ceremony when children of the cult turn twelve years old.
On the road Jessica speeds in Jessie's car, is pulled over and the two women are taken into the police station and held for several hours. This seems odd, no crime to have the same name... (George Foreman)
##13##
Released, too late to continue driving, another motel. Jessica dreams of the ceremony and pain from the burn. Jessica #2 texts a "last warning" to stop pursuing her.
##14##
Banished for questioning Todd, Jessica and Kiki spend one week alone in the Back Forest. Todd is insane, Jessica's mother unbelievably uncaring. They are send off with NO FOOD, and only a tent, shovel, matches and water jug. Criminal.
##15-16##
In Philly, JJ (#4) is a no-show. Jessica (#1) shows off her three-card-monty skills and the two pull a Bar Bill Scam which almost scares off JJ who is repulsed and who warns Jessica #2 will do worse if threatened.
##17##
Five years after Jessica escaped the land of Todd, Todd is dead of a heart attack. At the funeral, Kiki is changed after staying on the even more locked down compound
##18##
JJ's encounter was after a cooking convention in Des Moines. She had been at the top with celebrity chef endorsements. Taking her money wasn't enough, J#2 took her reputation as well with a fake tweet.
##19##
Jessica one's reputation also ruined a second time with an edited thesis now showing plagiarism. No giving up, now find / create another potential victim as bait.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Still compelling. What a horrific situation with Todd and his adult followers mistreating their own kids.

I'm afraid we might even find out worst from Kiki. This book has me so on edge. And now to worry about her further ruining Jessica's life publicly. I was very surprised the Bar Bill Scam...that they would so easily con someone after being conned. I'm wondering if I should read more into this scene than I am?

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Dawn: I stopped reading after this section (sleep called) but I was really nervous about Kiki so it was hard.
The idea of scamming the bar guy after being scammed by J#2 did make me question Jessica#1's motives quite a bit - I wondered how much her upbringing had molded her and her knowledge of the working and counter-measures for the three-card-monte scam made me wonder if that was an offshoot of her cult upbringing or after.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Dawn: Jessica #1 seems to have thrown all caution to the wind in going after Jessica#2 but the collateral damage does seem scary and intimidating for at the least the other two Jessie#3 and JJ#4.

I do like that Liam faded away and we have strong women going after their attacker themselves. Though I expect Liam will be back.

Kari | 149 comments The stuff about the cult is killing me! There's just these small little bits of the story that get interrupted by the chase for Jessica Two and I need more!

Dawn--I too am suspicious of just how savvy J1 and J3 are during that Bar Bill con. How did they both get conned so easily when it's obvious that J1 at least should be a much more difficult target? Also, I feel weird about the Bar Bill con--like, is the con that there is an expectation of some sort of sexual repayment on the part of the woman, and J1 and J3 got out of it by having "his wife" call the bar? Because the guy knew up front he was paying for everything, which is hardly a con.

I think there's more to Liam, as well.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Kari: the clues and dropped explanations of the cult and Kiki were killing me! It sure kept me reading though! As for the BarBill con apparently it was to see how high the bill could go with someone who wouldn't squawk. I didn't really get it.

Ah, yes! Good to know someone else was a bit confused by that con. But I'm still all about this cult stuff. Hopefully I'll read the next part tonight!

same for me- as to the cult and kiki as well as the bar bill. it also seemed strange to me that two people who really didn't know each other would decide to do something like that. of course in hindsight, that makes more sense.
