Showoff!

I've requested it, #6 in line.

Barbara K I will admit to having second thoughts about reading this. So many reviews have commented on an excess of violence in this one!

Barbara, me too. I quizzed Barry offline on the specifics and am pretty sure I don't want to listen to the audio-it's hard to escape the violence when listening. I'll see if a print copy comes in and decide then; at least I can skip past the gruesome parts.

Russ | 347 comments I'm in! Normally I read (on paper or e-reader) the group reads because I can make progress a little faster that way, but this one I actually want to listen to the audiobook because I want to hear how this narrators handles the different voices.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments I'm in too, I admit to a few feelings of trepidation, ( from the reviews of violence) but look forward to starting it soon. I have a couple of other library books list ned up first.

Russ | 347 comments Ann wrote: "I'm in too...

Yea! I'm reading the first section and preparing notes for summaries if nobody else takes the lead on that next week.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Russ: that sounds terrific! My reading will be audio, so more difficult to summarize. Much appreciated!

Nora Wolfenbarger | 18 comments I admire John Hart's writing style and have read each of his books. He has the greatest ability to show conflicting views of a problem through the development of his characters. This story already touches my heart.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9331 comments Wow Nora, Ann and Donna, you almost make we want to read this!

message 18: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Carol: I think you would be glad you did. distance from the graphic violence can be established .. mostly.
As Nora said, the writing and characters make it worthwhile.

If you haven't read John Hart books, I would suggest starting with 'The Last Child'. It is one of my favorites and will make you fall in love with his writing. Then when you get to 'The Unwilling', you can set aside the violence and simply appreciate the way he draws the reader into the conflicts, shows the good, the bad, and the ugly, and gets the reader inside the character's head. Have a great day.

Nora, my "read" list in GR shows I read Redemption Road in 2016, and I gave it 5 stars so I must have liked it. I frankly can't remember the plot, even with my review and others. I think it will come down to when I'm in the mood for a "dark" novel, even if it's well-written. But thanks for your encouragement!

Nora Wolfenbarger | 18 comments I'm a bit new to this Group Read. Is there a different topic for each month? Has the May selection been determined? Thanks for the help.

message 25: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Nora: yes generally there is a new group read book per Month. The May 2021 group read book is The Guest List. You can see the lineup on our group bookshelf. I’ll add a link when I am accessing through a browser connection instead of the app.
We usually have two or three overlapping books in an active discussion, though even after the group read books are off the group home page we still can keep discussions going. I hope you can join us for books that catch your interest to discuss!

Thanks Ann. I found the list. Looks like interesting reading. Does the group only choose traditionally published books? Just curious?

As opposed to what, Nora? Self-published? Something else? We do tend to pick books from favorite authors or new authors whose books are available at the library, Amazon or Audible. So yes, most are traditionally published books I think.

message 28: by Nora (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nora Wolfenbarger | 18 comments Thanks for the response, Ann. I like to support new authors, but I love my favorites as well. I was a little surprised that there wasn't more of a blend of self-published and traditionally published books. Perhaps one will be suggested soon. Keep up the good work.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16652 comments Nora: we make nominations here for future 2021 group read books. ;)
