This is my review, if anyone is interested - no spoilers.

Mary Jo, I do most of my listening from library CDs; second is Audible. My car is old and has a CD player, no Bluetooth, so that in part influences my preference. I rarely have trouble getting the popular mysteries although with some I may have to wait. I always have so much stacked up that while I may mind waiting because I'm eager to get to my favorites, I'm never out of stuff to listen to.

I took notes as I read -- generally one line per chapter, to orient myself when I came back to post. Chapter 29 ends with Elizabeth's discovery of a dead Douglas and Poppy.
I've enjoyed this quite a lot so far. I love all of these characters for different reasons. Joyce seems a little ditzy but in truth she is a master at misdirection and getting what she wants. I chuckled at the conversation between Elizabeth and Joyce where E knows J is hiding something and keeps at J until she confesses that Poppy slipped her her mum's number and asked her to call That was a hoot!
Elizabeth is a bit of a know it all and pushy but she keeps getting stuff done! You know she's going to figure things out. I was shocked at her plan to entrap Ryan Baird in the cocaine scheme (Ron as a plumber planting the evidence was slick!). That seemed excessive! But maybe the idea is just to scare him not to ruin his life.
I love her relationship with her husband, and speaking of which, his relationship with Bogdan who comes around regularly to play chess with him. I can't figure Bogdan out.
I was sure Douglas was shot the first time when he was hiding in the closet. I like how Osman left us guessing and then revealed Poppy shot the gunman before he could pull the trigger he was aiming at Douglas.
Poor Ibrahim, banged up in his assault by Ryan and his gang. That Martin Lomax is a very bad man. I'm sure there will be a confrontation with the Thursday Murder Club and I'm not looking forward to that!
Okay I jumped around a bit but hoping that guides the discussion of Part One! Looking forward to hearing other's thoughts, just say at the top of your post whether you're commenting on Part One or beyond.

I forgot to mention Chris and Donna. In the previous book I never quite adjusted to Chris with Donna's mum, I thought he was more of Donna's contemporary and it was leading toward that. But I love how in Book One Chris was just struggling with his weight (and Donna was thinking but not saying outright that he should eat better) and now his relationship with Donna's mum (forget her name) is causing him to eat healthfully! Go figure. Donna seems a little nonplussed by the relationship but basically okay with it.

Same here, in that I considered Chris and Donna contemporaries, but whether that was indicated in the book or I just imagined that, I've no idea. I do think Donna (like a lot of us might) is having trouble with her mother's very public displays of affection, and comments about, her sexy new boyfriend!

Patty and Carol: I had forgotten how Chris and Donna must have warmed to the Thursday Murder Club gang at the end of the first book. (But how could they not) Patrice (Donna's Mom ... or Mum lol) seems good for Chris and yes, easy to understand, uncomfortable for Donna. I like how the the MI5 and police end up with complimentary cases. The inclusion of both doesn't seem forced at all.

Thanks Mary Jo, that's very nice of you to say. I'd never thought of that. I guess I do connect enough to develop a point of view on each character. Even if I don't particularly like the book or the characters.

Ryan is a horrible person and I do want to see him pay for what he did, but I was glad that Elizabeth-with Bogdan's help and Chris/Donna looking the other way- is going with setting him up for drugs and not having him beat up/killed. That might be too far for me for someone who while nasty, is still 18.

I was surprised, but after thinking about it, glad, they didn't go the route of young woman/rookie and older man/mentor.

Finished this and ended up loving it. There was a part in the middle I thought was getting too dark and not enough fun/friendship/insights and I wasn't sure about the tie ins to Elizabeth's old spy life, but then it came back around to the old loyal friends I could relate to doing exciting things.
For anyone interested the Instagram name Joyce keeps mentioning is real! And there is a picture of Alan on it.

I agree it got a little dark, but only enough to add some interest. I think we need an element of danger so it doesn't sink into a silly cosy series about who stole the cookies, or something. 🍪🍪🤣

yeah, I'm too picky. Cozies are often too silly and light for me, but I don't like too much graphic violence/any torture etc. I like to think of the sweet spot as short British mysteries

Well said!

It just depends on my mood. If I need something light a cozy works, but I generally prefer something with more substance.

What I think I like the most about this series is the relationships. Elizabeth and Joyce are especially a hoot. Just when I'm ready to write Joyce off as a ditz she shows how smart/intuitive she really is. I especially like when Elizabeth is trying to talk her out of a funk but thinks she's being sly about it and Joyce says "don't try to cheer me up."

Oh I'm glad you liked it, Sherry. I can't wait for the new one. I'm surprised you didn't get it as an ARC!
There are three parts to the book, so we could mark spoilers up to each part in the test of any posts
- we are testing out one spoilers welcome thread per group read book.
Part 1 chapters 1-29 " Your friends are sure to visit"
Part 2 chapters 30-63 "At times you won't believe your eyes"
Part 3 chapters 64-84 "So many day trips for you to enjoy"
