I'm an ecologist so we do lots of surveys for different species including bats to see where they are, what 'routes' they travel along and where they feed. It can involve a far bit of sitting beside roads being seriously bored for two hours at dusk and dawn. (Hope that clears it up lol)

Sounds like interesting work though. There's a land research institute round the corner from my house in Aberdeen (the Macaulay Institute). I've read of people from there doing similar stuff. Think one of them got rabies after being bitten by a bat so it's risky work. :)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3572 comments Glad I am not the only one who can get bitten on the job! Yes someimes our patients do bite!

message 13: by Sam (last edited Jan 21, 2010 05:25PM) (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 590 comments Yea it is if you get good numbers, but some nights theres nothing and you start to wonder why you've dragged yourself out of bed at 2 in the morning, but never mind.

Thankfully they tend to ignore us most of the time, as we stay out of their roosts (where they sleep in the day) and avoid handling them, as you need special licenses to do either. Although I do know one or two bat specialists who have had a nip or two from the wee things and they've got surprisingly sharp teeth apparantly!

Sam (ecowitch) | 590 comments I've got a good one to slow Lynne down (I'm trawling my way through it at the moment), it's called Lost Lives: the Stories of the Men, Women and Children Who Died As a Result of the Northern Ireland Troubles by David McKittrick and others and covers every death that occured during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I can only read a bit at a time.
