Elizabeth☮ o.k. i noticed in another thread everyone posting celebrities they've had chance encounters with while in various places.

what about authors? which authors have you met and how?

my most memorable meeting is elie wiesel. he was doing a lecture at my university. i was waiting after class for the lecture to begin and my current romanticism professor (at the time) escorted mr. wiesel into the building. i was able to shake his hand and say hello. not much. but what an author to meet!

tell me who you've had the honor of meeting and any stories that go along with that encounter.

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments I don't have any :(. I'm quite sad about this! I have high hopes of running into Stephenie Meyer one day. But I would love to meet Maggie Steifvater! She seems so nice. I will be on the look out for authors. I want to really be able to post here!

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments How was Jennifer Weiner? I loved her book Good in Bed. She seems snazzy!

message 8: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) Jennifer has a very colorful vocabulary. I wasn't quite expecting that. I enjoyed seeing her. I am hoping to see her at Margaret Mitchell house.

message 14: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) Author events are always fun. The last one I went to the author had a car accident on the way to the bookstore. So it ended up lasting a lot longer than I thought but whose complaining.

message 15: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol

i was thinking about it and there was a woman there to translate, buit everyone but one girl talked in english, and the for one who didnt, cc got the question anyway so it was kind of funny that she wasnt doing anything there

message 16: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) I am hoping the next event will be just as interesting. The next locale is a library but the town around the library is interesting. This town hosts a book festival every year. So who would you like to see next?

message 17: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments LEO!! I was so thinking about you while driving today. How did it go with Cassandra Clare??!! I am so excited, you must tell me your whole experience. I must live it through you.

message 18: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) it was so cool! i think i posted the answers to the questions i asked for you somewhere...

message 19: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments Yes, I read them. Thank you! That part about the girl who just wanted to smell her was so funny! I was laughing for awhile.

message 20: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) yeah me and the girls who were nex on the autograph line laughed too. weird girl...

message 21: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments weird might be an understatement. Maybe unhinged is better.

message 22: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol for some reason i think it was a dare or something, but maybe YOU are right

message 23: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments I couldn't imagine wanting to smell anyone, unless...*thinks of people for smell testing* Gerard Butler possibly. :D

message 24: by Angela (new)

Angela B I wouldn't mind smelling Gerard Butler...

I can think of a few other men I'd smell....David Boreanaz and Sheemar Moore for instance :)

message 25: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments I'm totally with you on David Boreanaz and Sheemar Moore! I've had a thing for Boreanaz since he was on Buffy the vampire slayer. Well, not a thing as much as I just think he's smokin' hot.

message 26: by Angela (new)

Angela B ohhh meee toooo!!!!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

*Running to see who Gerard Butler is*

Did you tell her I said she is great and I want her to come to Wisconsin. LOL!

So, happy it went well. I even happy that you have a funny story about the sniffer girl.

message 28: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) *shows pic of the phantom of the opera, 300's king leonidas, beowulf*

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

*Grin*

message 34: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) A very good choice. :)

message 35: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I've met:

Ursula Hegi
Garrett Hongo
Bill McKibben
Eddy Harris
Garrison Keillor

There are a few others who escape me right now. University of North Dakota has an annual Writer's Conference and we get some good authors in - I missed Art Spiegelman this year. :(

Ursula Hegi has been one of my favorite authors since I read Stones from the River in about 1998. When I was in graduate school she came to UND - she taught a writing seminar that I took part in, and she spoke and read from her yet to be published book at that point, Sacred Time: A Novel. It was one of the best experinces I had in college.

Eddy Harris was also very interesting - my grad class went out for drinks with him after an event, and the restaurant was called "Whitey's". Eddy Harris (who is not white) looked around and asked in a semi-serious fashion, "Is it OK for me to go in here?"

message 36: by Angela (new)

Angela B That's pretty clever I like that

Does anyone here know someone who has written a book that's been published?

message 37: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments Someday I will know myself... *clears throat* that is when I get published.

And Gerard Butler is sexy with that accent. Maybe that's part of his charm!

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

accents are always sexy! Especially European accents.

an impressive list. ursula hegi has written some great novels. and to study under her, wow.

message 40: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ Tim O'Brien
Sandra Cisneros
Abraham Verghese
Elie Wiesel

these are a few i've met. when i went to the cisneros reading, i was so excited about meeting her afterward at the book signing.

i left my book in the truck, so my husband ran back to get it. as he's walking back to the theater (the place where the reading is taking place) he runs into cisneros and the host of the reading, someone moises knows. the host introduces moises to cisneros and they have a small chat. he asks her to autograph my book, but she says, "not before. i'm in the zone." chance encounters with celebrities, musicians, etc. always happen to moises!

message 41: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments Who else has he encountered? You've peaked my curiosity.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I've read Sandra Cisneros's book The House on Mango Street twice.

I have two Tim O'Brien books on the shelf.

Andrez (andrez-ssi) ❤ ☠ Elyssa ☠ ❤ wrote: "accents are always sexy! Especially European accents."

definitely, especially mediterranean

message 45: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments ha! my hubby is Mediterranean and I can't even hear his accent anymore. Funny huh? Most people can, but I don't so much. Except for when he stresses the wrong syllable or something. And from what people tell me his accent is pretty strong. :D My dad can't even talk on the phone with him cause he can't understand anything he says.

message 46: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol!

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

That is just way too funny. You are missing out on all the yummy hottness.

message 48: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments Except, you should hear him say "nerd" or words like that. It is so funny, I always laugh. Or sometimes he calls things by the wrong name. Like he used to call blinking "flinking" and once he called his bladder his uterus. I thought I was going to wet myself with that one. It was so funny I was crying.

message 49: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) *laughs* lol thats so funhny

message 50: by Antoine (new)

Antoine Devine (antoinemauricedevine) | 17 comments I've met Isaac Asimov, Greg Bear, Greg Benford, David Brin, Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer and Deepok Choprah.
