Literary Fiction by People of Color discussion

What a night at the National Book Awards! Jesmyn Ward won the award for fiction for her novel Salvage the Bones. Nikky Finney won the poetry award for her collection Head Off and Split. And Thanhha Lai won in the Young People's Literature category for Inside Out and Back Again. Congratulations to all!

This is really great! Is it just me or has there been an increase in writers of color being recognized in the last several years for these prestigious awards?! Funny, I'm about 40 pages from finishing Salvage the Bones now and I'm not certain whether I like this or not. It's undoubtably well written but just not what I expected. I would really like to know what others think who've finished the book.

I am getting a copy of SALVAGE THE BONE this afternoon. I also have WE THE ANIMALS. Don't know about it. It's due back at the library.
