Edward Ashton is the author of the novels Mickey7, Three Days in April and The End of Ordinary. His short fiction has appeared in venues ranging from the newsletter of an Italian sausage company to Escape Pod, Analog, and Fireside Fiction. He lives in upstate New York in a cabin in the woods (not that Cabin in the Woods) with his wife, a variable number of daughters, and an adorably mopey dog named Max, where he writes—mostly fiction, occasionally fact—under the watchful eyes of a giant woodpecker and a rotating cast of barred owls. In his free time, he enjoys cancer research, teaching quantum physics to sullen graduate students, and whittling. You can find him online at edwardashton.com or on Twitter @edashtonwriting.

My next two books, "Mal Goes to War" (available for preorder now, releasing in April, 2024) and "Currently Half-Way Through the First Draft" (releasing some time in the first half of 2025) are stand-alone novels, not connected to Mickey in any way. What happens after that will be determined after consultation with my agent, my editor, and a casting of the bones. I do have the skeleton of another Mickey book in the back of my head, but it's not 100% clear right now if or when it will ever see the light of day.(less)

In answer to your question: when a human is spun around an axis, there are several forces in play simultaneously. Centrifugal force presses you outward. Centripetal force (in Mickey's case applied by the floor of the carousel) balances that force and keeps you from flying away. If those were all there was, then rotation would be a perfect simulation of gravity and nobody would puke on the cyclotron ride at the county fair. Unfortunately, you're also subject to Coriolis force, which acts perpendicular to the direction of motion and the axis of rotation. The practical effect of this is to smear fluid around your inner ear whenever the orientation of your head changes, which tends to induce intense nausea in most people. That's why you're generally okay on the cyclotron as long as you stare straight ahead, but you get sick as soon as you turn your head.(less)

"5/5 - Mal is the sarcastic AI best friend you never knew you needed.

The squee I squeed when I heard John Pirhalla (who narrated Mickey7, also by Edward Ashton) as the main narrator in Mal Goes to War, was deafening. If you read Mickey7, you'll be thr" Read more of this review »

“I’ve always believed it’s important to accept the people in your life for what they are. There’s no such thing as a perfect friend, any more than there’s any such thing as a perfect anything, and if you slag everyone in your life for their many and varied failings, you’re going to miss appreciating the good stuff they bring to the table.”
Edward Ashton, Mickey7

“It’s a truism that every new technological advancement in human history has been applied first to advance the interests of the horny. The printing press? Some Bibles, mostly porn. Antibiotics? Perfect for treating STIs.”
Edward Ashton, Mickey7

“Apparently three hours of training lectures aren’t enough to overcome a billion years of ingrained instinct for self-preservation.”
Edward Ashton, Mickey7
