Pen Pal
, a standout novel with a brush of magical realism set in contemporary times. That novel is built around letters between a little girl living precariously in a houseboat off the Gulf Coast and a political prisoner suspended above a volcano in a Southeast Asian country. Pen Pal was my favorite book of 2013.

is 58% done with The Witch Roads: Quest fantasy has been a tough sell for me when it's on-the-road hardship broken by monster fights and unloading reams of bad poetry. This story 's on-the-road hardship is woven with good character dynamics, making it interesting, and some tiny glimpses of the numinous as well as mystery. Just what I like!
