I am thrilled to finally be able to announce that CIRCE is heading to television with an 8 episode season on HBO Max!  Here’s a Deadline article with more information, including the brilliant writers, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa (the team who is bringing us Mulan), and the producers, Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content.  As an author, it is an honor to have my work in the hands of such passionate, experienced, and thoughtful people. I can’t wait to see what they do with Circe’s story, and most of all I love that they are keeping the Witch of Aiaia firmly at the center of her own epic journey–just where she belongs. I promise more news as it comes, including casting!

And for those of you who remember when I announced that the rights for The Song of Achilles had been bought, an update: those rights have lapsed, but I promise I haven’t forgotten about Achilles and Patroclus. Along with the big and small screens, it has long been the wish of my heart to see The Song of Achilles on the stage.  If and when I have news, I will post.

Most of all: thanks to all of you who wrote so kindly with your congratulations, and for all your support and faith in my work. I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I have the best readers in the world.   Thank you for taking Circe’s and Patroclus’ stories so much to heart.

Today, Circe is finally out in the world!  I have lots of exciting updates below, but first I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of you for your support and faith in my work.  In the last eight years, I have had the privilege to hear from so many readers–by email and in bookstores, through handwritten letters and on social media.  Thank you for taking The Song of Achilles–and now Circe–into your hearts.  These books have found their place in the world because of all of you, and it never ceases to feel astonishing and miraculous that the characters I lived with so long and loved so much have spoken to others as well.  Thank you.

The Song of Achilles welcomes the new kid on the block. (That’s poisonous hellebore in the background).

Some news:

I published two essays recently, one on Penelope in the Telegraph, and one on Witches in the Guardian.

I was also fortunate enough to have a profile in the NYT, for which I got to wander around the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my old stomping grounds/paradise.

I was thrilled to get a review by Ron Charles in The Washington Post, which just came out yesterday!

I’ve been doing Q and A’s for a number of places, including the fabulous Parnassus Books in Nashville.

And of course, my book tour kicks off tonight at Main Point Books!

A review for The Washington Post.

Attempting a new translation of “The Odyssey” is like directing “Hamlet.” Much of your audience knows the work well, and they take their seats with entrenched expectations and the intonations of favorite performances reverberating in their heads. At the same time, though, you will have audience members who have never seen the play, for whom you provide the introduction to a giant of Western literature. And let us not forget those who are there under duress, dreading the upcoming hours of boredom. You must find a way to speak to these disparate groups, sneaking past the defenses of the devotees while drawing in those less familiar. It’s an ambitious task, one that calls for skill, cleverness and strong nerves, qualities that define “The Odyssey’s” wily protagonist himself.

Today is the anniversary of the death of Cicero, the great Roman orator, lawyer, statesman and writer.

In 43 BCE, the “Father of the Fatherland” was assassinated at the command of Octavian (future Augustus) and Mark Antony.  According to the story, Cicero had begun to flee his house, but when he heard the men coming for him, he ordered his litter to be put down, and stoically offered his neck to the sword.  By order of Mark Antony (who hated Cicero for the many speeches he had given against him), Cicero’s head and hands were chopped off, and displayed in the Forum.  Antony’s wife pulled a pin from her hair and stuck it through his tongue.  There could be no clearer message that the great speaker and writer had been silenced.
