Alexander Montgomerie (1545 - 1611) was a Scottish Jacobean courtier and poet, or makar, born in Ayrshire. He served the regent the Earl of Morton during the minority of James VI and continued in the king's service after Morton's fall. He was one of the principal members of the Castalian Band, a circle of poets in James's court in the 1580s which included the king himself. His poem The Cherrie and the Slae was first published in 1597.

Montgomerie's Catholicism drew him into dangerous alliances and conspiracies and he was banished from Scotland as a traitor, dying in exile abroad. ...more
