“Okay, first rule: don’t let them stab you in the face!”
Max starts to laugh again. When he opens his eyes, both men are staring down at him; Colton seems slightly more baffled, and Overalls looks like he wants to kill them both.
“Is this your first time doing this?” Max asks, once he can catch his breath. “Oh my God, that’s so cute. I thought you were both just really stupid.”

“That cop said they have a monster that goes after girls,” Max continues. “So if we ran into it, would it go after me? Or you? Are cryptids transphobic, or aren’t they?”

“Yeah, well, he sucked at it. Now I can’t stop thinking about the gender politics of some backwoods monster that doesn’t even exist. What if Nessie’s a TERF, right?”
“Then some monster-fuckers are gonna need a whole bunch of therapy to get over it.”
