It's not perfect, but I would definitely love to read more.

description

The gist is that The Order is a group of magic users who protect the earth from supernatural threats, and there is a that a severely dysfunctional family of magicians goes to war with mystic bad guys.

description

The entire time I'm reading this I was thinking that it was a pretty straightforward story about villains who are evil for the sake of being evil and then trying to sort of family drama in a magical setting.
But.
That last issue has some twists that I didn't see coming.

description

If you like supernatural comics, you could do worse than this one.

Take five families of magicians, stir in some bloody internecine conflict, add a dash of mysterious monsters, toss in several fistfuls of graphic violence, and throw in a pinch of completely unnecessary nudity and you’ve got The Magic Order.

Netflix’s first comic release (and soon to be streaming on a TV near you) is pretty typical Millar, which is intended as both a compliment and a caution. If you’ve dipped your toes into Millar’s creator-owned waters before, well, first and foremost, get a towel, and don’t do that again, because it’s both rude and kind of gross to go sticking your feet in someone’s personal supply of fluids. Once you’ve done that, know that if you’ve previously enjoyed engaging in that verboten activity with Mr. Millar, you’ll probably like this and, if you haven’t, then you probably won’t.

If you’re new to moistening yourself with Millar’s liquescent subtances, you’ll dig this if you like magic, secret societies, and plot twists, so definitely check it out. My only complaint: so much time is spent on the internal warfare that, though it’s alluded to briefly, we don’t really get to see the Order in action doing what it normally does very much, which in and of itself would be interesting. More to come in future volumes, perhaps.

The Magic Order secretly battles threats to humanity and keeps the peace - until now. A renegade group of magicians led by the evil Madame Albany is challenging the current Order, headed up by the patriarch of the Moonstone family, for power, and removing anyone in their way via the mysterious and deadly assassin, The Venetian. But do the Moonstones have a trick up their sleeve to prevail against this seemingly unstoppable onslaught…?

This is Mark Millar’s best comic since the first Jupiter’s Legacy, which isn’t to say that either are that good but are surprisingly less terrible than Millar’s usual standard! And like Jupiter’s Legacy, this is a story of an extraordinary, albeit dysfunctional, family. Cordelia Moonstone is a carbon copy of Chloe Sampson and the flashback to the family battling Lovecraftian monsters was just like the flashbacks in Legacy.

On the subject of derivative, Moonstone Castle and Uncle Edgar are basically The Dreaming and Lucien the Librarian from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, and The Venetian strongly reminded me of Guy Davis’ The Marquis.

The story is very simplistic: hero magicians vs villain magicians, ditto Madame Albany’s motivations and appearance - she’s the baddie so she wears a gimp mask and doesn’t have pupils! Still, the ways the magicians are assassinated by the Venetian were really imaginative and compelling - definitely the best part of the book. And, while it is simplistic, I wouldn’t say the story was that dull or predictable, beyond the obvious question of whether good will triumph over evil.

That ending though: oof, what a cop-out! And the reveal of the Venetian and their motivations will only be palatable to those who thought Anakin’s reasoning for turning to the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith was satisfying!

Olivier Coipel’s art was outstanding. He really sells the unusual deaths of the magicians perfectly, showing the reader some truly remarkable things (I’m thinking in particular of the death at the end of the first issue). The Venetian is a strikingly menacing figure too, and the book’s visuals as a whole benefit enormously from multi-award-winning colourist Dave Stewart’s usual incredible work.

The Magic Order has its flaws though not as many as you might expect from latter-day Mark Millar. It’s a great-looking comic that holds the attention and even occasionally entertains - not too shabby!

This is Millar's best idea he's had in years, perfectly executed by Olivier Coipel and Dave Stewart. Yes, it's a simple concept. Evil magicians start murdering good ones in order to obtain an all-powerful book. Millar leaves a ton of meat on the bone focusing on the basic story instead of character. But it's so well done though, that I want to see more. Coipel's art is so well crafted. There's a reason why he's one of the top artists working in comics. The end of the first issue is just chilling.

This appears to be the first comic under Millar's Netflix deal. As with a lot of his latter day comics, this is almost a story treatment more than it is a fully fledged story. There's a lot Millar leaves hanging and not fleshed out that Coipel's detailed and fully realized visuals fill in to make this better than it should be.

Received a review copy from Image and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

This was the first new series released after Netflix acquired the Millarworld library, ostensibly for multiple film and television development projects. Five years later, all Netflix had to show for that purchase was a cancelled and abbreviated Jupiter's Legacy, and a Super Crooks anime. I'm sure there's more in the pipeline, at least several The Magic Order rumors even. Other than that, that is all Netflix had to show for after throwing a big bag of money at Millar. (July 28, 2023)

This was originally read as six single issues in floppy from. Here are the links to my reviews of each issue.

Wow. The greatest thing Mark Millar's written in a while, or possibly ever. I usually disparage his graphic novels by saying they are simply movie pitches, but I'm on board with this one 100%. Bring on the Netflix series ASAP!

Intriguing characters, clever twists, cinematic shots and dialogue, all well served by the awesome art of Olivier Coipel.

UPDATE 6/29/2022:
I reread Vol. 1 in preparation for reading Vol. 2 today, and I feel it really stands up as one of Millar's better books. Cordelia Moonstone rocks! I'm looking forward to checking out the Netflix show if it ever makes it to the screen. (Over the last few years it's been greenlit, dropped, and picked up again.)

This was fascinating and I loved it, seeing this family of magicians and how they get assassinated and then coming together to find whose behind it, and just the way it resolves is awesome. Like I knew the twist this time in rereads but its so fascinating this time seeing the clues planted and seeing a parent's love for their child and seeing how far they will go.. its kinda awesome and very philosophical also and I love it. The design of the villain was so cool and truly can't wait to read the rest of the volume! Also loved the art here, its so gorgeous and you can see the love that went into creating this and just for that I'd say go and read it!!

This book is about a family named Moonstones led by Leonard and they are a part of Magic order that keep the world and humans safe but then when the Magic order is targeted by mysterious assassins and our characters start dying and we learn who it is aka Madame Albany and can't do anything they become aware and so the children of Leonard aka Regan and Cordelia have to stop her and the mysterious assassin "The Venetian" and we learn of their third sibling Gabriel and his history but when they lose a certain someone whose close to them, it comes home and the real fight starts and the revelations and whose behind this and why they did what they did and it ends on such a great note with one of the greatest ones and a good resolution in the end and "magic has a cost" is shown here.

This book is awesome as it does not shy away from crazy spells and its a mixture of Harry Potter and other things but its a family about a father trying to save his child on both ends and a family and secret magic societies and crazy spells, twists and turns and ends with a good resolution for sure. I would love to see more future volumes as they seem exciting. Also the main highlight has to be the art by Coipiel as its just too good and Cordelia looks so hot and amazing and others too and some unique magic spells for sure! Great one time read!

someone needs to tell Mark Millar to stop being such a damn hack, he's wasting his already limited skill set by not thinking things through, getting so enchanted with his basic concept that he forgot to build an actual story around that concept, let alone characters. this is basically a slaughter of Good Wizards by Bad Wizards but why should I care when I don't have any understanding of who these supposed good guys are? there's the gay one, the Asian one, the Italian one, the black one, the old lady, the dad, am I missing anyone? it's just a buffet of kill shots and I'm not hungry for that.

someone needs to tell Netflix that they shouldn't be producing comic books like comics are some sort of factory farm where their tv series are birthed. well someone may have already told them, and they listened, because apparently production on The Magic Order isn't happening. which is a wee bit sad because this would probably be better as a show than a comic. and while I'm on the topic, fuck you Netflix for not renewing 1899!

someone needs to tell Olivier Coipel that his formidable talents are wasted on drek like this. his art is the only thing good about this weak nonsense.

someone needs to tell someone, somewhere, that "The Magic Order" is just about the blandest title one could imagine, but I guess it fits this anonymous so-called story.

someone needs to tell me, remind me, maybe stick a post-it on my forehead, that it's a real waste of energy writing these bitchy rants because all they do is raise my blood pressure and who needs that?

After reading this I’m kinda surprised people were calling this the “best Mark Millar book in years”, like I don’t even dislike Millar’s work, but I found this to be one of his weakest projects by a pretty big stretch. It’s just Harry Potter for adults with the same structure and characters as Jupiter’s Legacy. Honestly hated this way more than I thought I would.

The only thing I loved about this was Oliver Coipel’s art, which is wonderful. All the characters are just clones of the characters from Jupiter’s Legacy though, with Cordelia Moonstone and Chloe Sampson literally being the exact same fucking character, it’s ridiculous. The story itself isn’t all the interesting either, with bad wizards having hired a special killer to take down the Magic Order, the good wizards.

I also fucking despised the ending, and I think it’s what killed this whole thing for me. It is seriously one of the most unsatisfying conclusions ever, with the “twist” having been one of the most predictable ones I’ve read in a comic in recent memory. Like seriously, who else could have been the Venetian? No one, it was obvious as fuck from the third issue who it was going to be. And the book seriously spends the whole time killing off all these wizards from the Magic Order just to bring them ALL back by the final issue. Seriously? So you can’t resurrect your brother’s dead daughter who died in an accident but you can resurrect all your magic buddies who were murdered by evil wizards earlier in the book? They don’t even do anything of note in here or in the next volume, so what was the fucking point?

I’m honestly just surprised this is getting called the “best Mark Millar book in years” because it’s exactly the same as all his other work: A 6 issue miniseries that will probably make a better TV show or movie and that has lots of ultraviolence, samey characters, and an ending that sets up all a million sequels if Millar wants to do them. There’s just nothing here that differentiates this from any of the other Millarworld titles.

This story grew on me and the ending was satisfying.

Netflix is putting this story together and they are developing this story for a series run, I would assume like the Umbrella Academy (which is a fantastic show and caused the appreciation of the graphic novel for me).

There is a Magic order that protects an unsuspecting humankind from dangerous monsters with magic (think Buffy the Vampire Slayer). It is violent and gorey at times and there are some great moments of wonder too. There is a mysterious faction that is going around murdering this magic order to get to their hidden home base.

The ending was such a good twist and I didn't see it coming. I hope it makes a great show.

What was this? Oh, I'm so sad that I think about stories and that I love storytelling, otherwise, I'd enjoy this. This was bad. The story is unfortunately bad. One thing that is excellent is Olivier Coipel. It is magnificent and great. I want Olivier to draw everything. him and Clay Mann!

Art? 5*
Story? 2*

I'd love to give this lower rating. But I can't. Because of the art.

Back to this. Soft magic systems work. BUT. "A wizard did it" doesn't work when everyone is a wizard and there is no rules, nothing. Something happens because of plot and shock value. It sucks. There is a "twist" which is really poorly made. And it is really sad because Harry Potter (which was an obvious inspiration here) made this much, much better. Clues, variabilities, little bread crumbs...

Millar is not writing like his heart is in. The concept is cool. But it is exactly what it will be - a pitch for Netflix to make a better story with it.

One last spoiler thing:

YOU STUPID FUCK, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO RESURRECT THE DEAD AND YOU DO IT WITH JUST A WAVE OF A WAND WHY DIDNT YOU RESURRECT YOUR NIECE?

The Magic order is the reason we are safe from supernatural threats, but can they keep themselves safe from a mysterious and very powerful magician?
Quite intriguing story from start to finish. Coipel's art is awesome.

Picked this up because of the cover and the description, got a little ways in and was like, Wait, wait, is this the Jupiter's Legacy guy? (It is.) The art's the same, the basic story is the same, except with magic instead of superheroes. And there's extreme violence and gratuitous sex while people talk about stuff that happened before the story started, making the reader wonder if they've missed something. Also, the most interesting characters got done dirty (in my opinion), while the character Millar is clearly in love with got too much screen time, and for no reason. (People are dying, do we need to see this goes nowhere flashback? Or this person naked?) I also wish the all the women hadn't been traced from Golden Age Lois Lane, so that they could be told apart.

I did actually like the ending, and I don't regret reading it. I just . . . I wanted something more from a book called The Magic Order with such a great cover, you know?

Damn, this was good!

Such a simple concept, but executed so very well by Mark Millar and his team. I haven’t read any of Millar’s previous work, but I’m familiar enough with it to know that this is pretty exceptional! An order of (good) magicians tasked with keeping the world safe, being hunted down by a mysterious assassin and a band of renegade (evil) magicians. There ya go.

For such a short series, it packed just the right amount of characterization for me to really enjoy each one without being overdone or half-baked. The story is easy to follow, and the art style is the sort I gravitate towards. Olivier Coipel’s artistry isn’t over-stylized (which I love, because that can often ruin a comic— make it too chaotic or cartoony), but fantastical enough for me to truly appreciate the images he created. The characters are super expressive; Coipel captures emotions beautifully. I dig how Adult it is, too: the violence, the horror, the vulgarity... this ain’t your kid’s comic book! Each panel I pored over, finding the details that are so often lacking or lost in other lesser works. All that mixed seamlessly with the fantastic coloring by Dave Stewart (un-muddied, clear, and vibrant).

Some of the ideas and magic present throughout the story was so creative and unique (trapping someone inside a classic novel’s plot!!!). I don’t know, I just think this whole comic was so cool! My only complaint would be that I felt the ending was rushed— too many loose ends. I really wanted more after Issue #6 ended.

Harry Potter meets John Wick. A magic order keeps humanity safe from magical enemies, but internal clashes have led to a spate of assassinations. One magical family must stop the murders without first killing each other. It's all classic Mark Millar: a troubled, powerful family must come together to solve a fantastical problem BUT WAIT there's a crazy twist that you won't see coming. And of course the art is fantastic.

Somehow, Millar also manages to create a unique-ish setting and a handful of well-rounded individuals over the course of six extremely fast-paced issues, making The Magic Order perhaps a step up on some of his other work. Published (or sponsored?) by Netflix, it definitely reads like the detailed plot outline for an eventual Netflix series that will have more room to breathe. I'm not complaining, though, not really. I couldn't put the book down and glanced right over all the plot holes. I want to dislike Millar and his ceaseless use of generic tropes, but I simply can't.

This is my first Mark Millar book and BOY its pretty "Eh"

The art and color is amazing and the first half issues are pretty intense but the last issue just flip all my expectation to this book. It's pretty lame that the way the author end it by reversing every death. That completely voids all of the consequences from the previous issues.

Are they making more of this or is it just a mini series and that's why they end it this way?

Fun read

Art is great and there are some cool ideas. That's all. That's all positives I can say about this series. This is one of the most shallow, lazy and cheap stories I have ever read. No foreshadowing, no hinting, no coherence of the magic world. Just continual sequence of making shits up and lazy (magic) solutions for the plot. To be specific let me explain.
Consider Harry Potter (obvious story to compare). In each book author explains some new principles and characters and foreshadows to the reader events that will follow. So every reader can deduce outcome of the book. They usually don't, but after reading they go back and say "how could I never see this coming, it's so obvious". Events and outcomes of the books are logic because reader have all tools to solve it. It's simply called playing fair game with the reader.
And here comes Mark Millar with his lazy story. There is biggest twist of the book and you are like "What? Why? Did I miss something? Why is this happening? There was no hint for this." It's like if you were telling the story of Red Riding Hood and when the wolf eats grandma the Red Riding Hood suddenly draws lightsaber and cuts wolf's head off. Because she was a jedi the whole time, gotcha!
SPOILER: Story of The Magic Order climaxed because one character knows spell that solves basicaly whole plot. How fucking convinient. END SPOILER

A před zlými věcmi nás chrání Magic Order.

- čekáte promyšlený svět a ne jenom mix dobře vypadajících nápadů a narážek
- nestojíte o další dysfunkční rodinu, která musí spojit síly dohromady

You have seen this expression, "Harry Potter for adults" all over the place in marketing books. I know right off the Lev Grossman's The Magicians has certainly been marketed that way. It is a much closer approximation to the Harry Potter universe than this story is, but you get a general idea. Lots of books for adults want to capture the kind of magic that Harry Potter battling evil unbeknownst to muggles captures for kids. This is one of those books that loosely attempts at this.

The premise of the story is there are five families of magicians who protect the world. This isn't staged magic, although some of the members of the families make their bread and butter by doing tricks. This is real magic. They use their skills to protect humanity from the dark and more nefarious arts and those who would take advantage of humanity. Good and evil families battle for power. In the middle of the battle for power is a highly dysfunctional family, The Moonstones.

Things fall apart as members of the families get assassinated one by one, till the center cannot hold. The narrative and pacing of the story are pretty flat, you know what is going to happen from the second page. However, the assassination scenes are very creative and interesting. Where this story shines is Coipel's artwork. It is stellar. Gorgeous. It brings flat scenes up to par and makes them jump off of the page.

If you like comics with a magic bend to them, this isn't bad.

By the time I got to the end of the book I came away with the feeling that this reminded me of Millar's Jupiter books (Circle and Legacy). This is a very story driven tale, and not a lot of characterization takes place. That doesn't make it a bad book, but the characters felt interchangeable to me in many ways. Yes, they have different names, look different, but...

At the end it didn't feel like any of them stood out. The premise is good. A family essentially controls magic in the world. What is allowed out, is well not a lot unless you're one of the order.

Basic concept, executed well. The Jupiter books picked up for me in series two, where I felt the individual characters stood out more. As this felt likes it is leading into a volume 2, I'm expecting more of the same from Millar.

A fun, action-packed story about the order of wizards living in our world and protecting us from evil and darkness. But it's mostly about members of The Magic Order being killed one by one.

It's similar to Millar's Reborn where the reader is thrown into a complex world with little explaining but The Magic Order is a really easy-to-read story with perfect art and huge plot hole at the end.

I wonder if this is just a "preview" for possible Netflix TV show or if Millar plans to do more.
