In a desolate shantytown in the middle of nowhere, on a military controlled zone, endures with great hardships an old retired colonel. A dangerously declining health, an aging wife with recurring asthmatic attacks, a house slowly coming down to pieces, a son lost to the revolution. All his hopes are focused on the arrival of news regarding his veteran pension, that seems never to come; and a little cockfighting rooster, that seems to be the strongest of all three. A short novella about the unbreakable will of the eternally patient, and the penurious conditions of a hardly day-to-day living. Interesting, readable, but not exceptionally enjoyable. I've been wanting to read Gabo again for some time now; I've read a lot of his books, but this is sadly not the one I loved most. And I still have "One hundred years of solitude" on tbr. I know, unforgivable. Una salud peligrosamente declinante, una envejecida esposa con recurrentes crisis asmáticas, una casa cayéndose lentamente a pedazos, un hijo muerto en la revolución. Todas sus esperanzas se centran en la llegada de alguna noticia sobre la pensión de veterano que parece nunca llegar; y en un pequeño gallo de peleas, que parece ser el más fuerte de los tres. Una corta novella sobre la voluntad inquebrantable del eterno paciente, y las penurias de sobrevivir difícilmente día a día. Interesante, leíble, pero no excepcionalmente disfrutable. Hace mucho tiempo que tenía ganas de volver a leer Gabo, pero lamentablemente éste no es el libro que más voy a recordar de él. Y todavía me debo leer "Cien años de soledad". Lo sé, imperdonable. This book specifically warns from the start that this is a sad story. Innocent me, I thought this was going to be haha sad, funny sad; but no, this is just sad. This is pure sadness. This is so fucking sad! What the hell is wrong with you Lemony? And I have twelve more books of crushing sadness to go through? YOU SICK TWISTED FUCK! I have to admire the writer’s capacity to make me hate and love something so much in so few pages. LOVED the Baudelaire siblings, and their group strength and resilience to face all the crappy things that befalls them. Took me only two chapters to HATE Count Olaf with all my mangled heart. And I need more Justice Strauss please. I’m hoping for a diamond incrusted rainbow at the end of the series or else... In this graphic novel we learn the story of "Clementine", an innocent sixteen year old schoolgirl. Clementine believes she is straight, but when she meets "Emma", everything begins to change. Blue hair, blue eyes, blue aura spreading all over her life. Her heart, her body, and everything within her is shaken to a world completely unknown before. Unable to understand her new found feelings, every emotional part of her begins to fall apart. Slowly, and painfully, Clementine starts the difficult process of coming out, and come to terms with her new sexuality. But her friends and family are not really supportive, and Emma is not really single. A beautiful short graphic novel about the painful hardships of coming out, overcoming the prejudices of the inner circle, and the ultimately acceptance of our own sexuality. Moving, tearful, enlightening; a truly unique read. **** The movie is superb adaptation. Maybe even a major improvement on the graphic novel. Some very big changes were made to the original plot, but masterfully executed. Most of the praising goes to the outstanding heartbreaking performance of Adèle Exarchopoulos, and an exceptional Léa Seydoux. It may have been a little bit too excessive on the graphicness of the sex scenes, sure, but leaving that aside, a perfect drama in almost every way, truly deserving of the Palme d'Or. ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [2010] [156p] [Comics] [Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- El amor, como un indefinible milagro libre de género. Incapaz de entender sus nuevos sentimientos, cada parte emocional de ella empieza a derrumbarse. Lenta, y dolorosamente, Clementine empieza el dificultuoso proceso de salir del clóset, y tratar de aceptar su nueva sexualidad. Pero sus amigos y familia no son realmente receptivos, y Emma no está realmente soltera. Una hermosa corta novela gráfica sobre las dolorosas dificultades de salir del clóset, la superación de los prejuicios del círculo cercano, y la aceptación final de nuestra propia sexualidad. Conmovedora, lagrimeante, reveladora; una lectura verdaderamente única. **** La película es una adaptación sobresaliente. Tal vez incluso una gran mejora sobre la novela gráfica. Algunos cambios muy grandes se hicieron sobre la trama original, pero magistralmente ejecutados. La mayor parte de los laureses se los lleva la extremadamente conmovedora actuación de una magnífica Adèle Exarchopoulos, y una excepcional Léa Seydoux. In a dystopian future, firemen don't put out fires... they start it. Books, and freethinkers, are burned with a flamethrower without a seconds thought. Guy Montag, one of these incendiary firemen, after a series of events starts awakening from his long and blind indoctrination. To his horror, he finds an identity and a mind of his own. But in a completely monitored and subjugated society, thinking can cost your life. One single mistake and Guy may find himself on the other side of the flamethrower... A very short novel, with a lot of feel of Orwell's 1984. A novel that emphasizes the value of written legacy, books, and free will. An interesting read, with lots of moments and quotations to remember, but somewhat far from the dazzling 1984 experience. What I couldn't grasp was Bradbury's confusing way to describe things, not because of the vocabulary, but because of the phrasing. Several of them seemed incomprehensible, or incoherent. Maybe I just got one of those weird faulty electronic copies. Or maybe this was just a book that I may have been able to enjoy much more reading it in spanish. Maybe. Might try Martian Chronicles someday, in spanish. **** Both movies fell kinda flat. Interesting, but not really enjoyable, and specially not 2018. 1966 - Definitely the most faithful to the book. Some important changes to the original plot, but welcomed ones. Unremarkable acting, at best. Decent effects, considering. Not necessarily a good film, but it does have some redeeming qualities. 2018 - It would be generous if said it has any redeeming qualities. Terribly unfaithful to the book. Besides the names, setting and *some* basic plot, everything else was changed. And not in a good way. [2.5] ----------------------------------------------- Un libro, un lanzallamas, y una mente muy perturbada. En un futuro distópico, los bomberos no apagan incendios... sino que los inician. Los libros, y los librepensadores, son quemados con lanzallamas sin mediar palabra. Guy Montag, uno de estos bomberos incendiarios, tras una serie de eventos empieza a despertar de su largo y ciego adoctrinamiento. Para su horror, encuentra una identidad y pensamiento propio. Pero en una sociedad completamente vigilada y subyugada, pensar puede costar la vida. Un simple error y Guy podría encontrarse del otro lado del lanzallamas... Una novela muy corta, con mucho feel de 1984 de Orwell. Una novela que resalta el valor de los libros, el legado de la palabra, y del pensamiento libre. Una lectura interesante, con varias citas y momentos para el recuerdo, pero algo lejos de la genial experiencia que fue leer 1984. Lo que no pude digerir es la forma enrevesada que tiene Bradbury para describir las cosas. Reiteradas frases me resultaron incoherentes o irrelevantes. Tal vez me topé con una de esas raras malas copias digitales. O quizás éste sea uno de esos libros que tal vez hubiera podido disfrutar mucho más leyéndolo en español. Tal vez. Intentaré con Crónicas Marcianas algún día, en español. **** Ambas peliculas me cayeron sosas. Interesantes, pero no muy disfrutables, especialmente no 2018. 1966 - Definitivamente la más fiel al libro. Algunos cambios importantes a la trama original, pero bien recibidos. Actuación regular, como mucho. Efectos decentes, considerando. No necesariamente una buena película, pero tiene algunas buenas cualidades. 2018 - Sería generoso decir que tiene alguna buena cualidad. Terriblemente infiel al espíritu del libro. Aparte de los nombres, contexto y *algo* de la trama original, todo fue cambiado. Y no de una buena manera. Some people need to cut ties to have a fresh start, others only need to say goodbye, and some people, some people just need to burn everything down. A fire starts in the idyllic land of Shaker Heights. Residence of the Richardson family, the reliable parents Bill and Elena, and their lovely kids, Trip, Lexie, Moody and Izzy. The perfect Richardson family, watching their perfect dreamed house ablaze, with imperfect little fires, lighting every single room. Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl, the tenants of their rental house, mysteriously gone the day before. Who started the fire, but more importantly, why? When you find yourself wanting to finish a book, and at the same time, not wanting it to end, then you realize you stumbled upon something good. A remarkable read indeed. An almost-favorite status earned. This novel touches some important topics like motherhood. privilege and accountability in a very meaningful way. Excellent character development. The entitlement of the Richardson family can be kind of tiresome, but it works wonders with the carefree spirit of the Warrens. I specially loved pretty much everything about Mia’s past (and present) and all the bits about photography. Almost made me want to start photography myself. La perfecta familia Richardson, observando su perfecta soñada casa ardiendo, con pequeños imperfectos fuegos, iluminando cada habitación. Mia Warren y su hija Pearl, los inquilinos de su casa de alquiler, misteriosamente ausentes desde el día anterior. ¿Quién inició el fuego, pero más importante, por qué? Cuando estás queriendo acabar un libro, y al mismo tiempo, no queriendo que termine, entonces sabés que encontraste algo bueno. Una lectura verdaderamente destacable. Una clasificación casi-favorito ganada. Esta novela trata importantes tópicos como la maternidad, privilegio y responsabilidad en una forma muy significativa. Excelente desarrollo de personajes. La soberbia de los Richardson puede ser algo cansador, pero funciona de maravillas en contraste con el espíritu libre de los Warrens. Amé especialmente casi todo sobre el pasado de Mia (y presente) y todas las partes sobre fotografía. Casi me hace querer empezar a fotografiar como pasatiempo. Bruno, his sister Gretel and his parents are compelled to relocate to Out-With, to a much smaller house, forsaking family and friends, and sacrificing everything for the important rank promotion. In this new house isolated from the rest of the world, Bruno finds a small window that allows him to see at the distance an incredibly large area with tiny little huts; and an endless number of tiny little figures dressed in a curious striped outfit. Mature, old people... and children. In a huge wire fenced field. A superb holocaust historical fiction, and a must read alongside the Diary of Anne Frank. Two unique and different perspectives of a same tragedy. A novel about the cruelties of war, and the self invented differences that lead humanity to separate itself. So very powerful. Heartbreaking and painful as few others. Two wandering day laborers traveling together; from work to work, from trouble to trouble. One small and cunning; the other giant, and retarded. Working from city to city, from field to field, but always protecting each other. A dream pushes them forward, work the fields until one day have enough to purchase a small farm of their own. A place where George can work the land, and Lennie tend the rabbits. But there are difficulties, Lennie in his brutish innocence tends to get himself into serious problems, and more often that not, both. A short but very memorable read from the famed Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. A little 100p novella about the unbreakable bonds of friendship, and the cruelties of a sometimes hostile rural world. **** One of those very few exceptions where the movie may actually match the book. John Steinbeck creates two immortal characters, but the movie (1992) gives them a real palpable soul. Mainly due to the exceptional performance of John Malkovich, and a very remarkable Gary Sinise. Brilliant book-to-film adaptation. Un sueño los motiva a seguir juntos, trabajar los campos hasta algún día tener lo suficiente para comprar una pequeña parcela propia. Un lugar donde George pueda trabajar la tierra, y Lennie cuidar de los conejos. Pero existen dificultades, Lennie en su bruta inocencia tiende a meterse en serios aprietos... y más que a menudo, a ambos. Una lectura corta pero muy memorable del afamado ganador del Pulitzer John Steinbeck. Highly recommendable, very powerful, inexplicably painful. There are books that tell an unique unforgettable story, but there are a few special ones that also have the exceptional quality of transmitting something immensely valuable about the culture of a foreign country; beyond the deeply ideological differences, pros and cons you may find with such society. And, like I hold "Shantaram" as an unequalled novel about indian culture, I will hold "Kite Runner" as an inestimable novel about afghan. And I remain hopeful of ever finding books like these two, regarding any foreign culture. Hay libros que cuentan una historia única e inolvidable, pero existen algunos muy especiales que además tienen la excepcional cualidad de trasmitir algo inestimable sobre la cultura de otro país; más allá de las profundas diferencias ideológicas, pros y contras que uno pueda ver en dicha sociedad. Y así como estimo a Shantaram como una novela inigualable sobre la cultura india, tendré a Kite Runner como un fruto inestimable de la cultura afgana. Y me mantengo esperanzado de encontrarme alguna vez con otras novelas como éstas dos, sobre cualquier cultura extranjera. Pocas veces sufrí tanto con un libro, pero la medida del sufrimiento es una buena medida de lo profundamente que conectaste y te llegó determinado libro. A death will change young Starr's life forever, and, ultimately, the life of everyone in her neighborhood. A very, very memorable read, with a lot of moments and quotes to remember. A novel that faithfully depictures the vicissitudes of living as an afro-american minority, the racial prejudices, discrimination and the failings of a system designed to create racial injustices. **** The movie is an very good book-to-film adaptation. As always, differences were noticed and some depth was lost, but even still it keeps a very faithful representation of the book. Amandla Stenberg delivers a very powerful performance, truly remarkable. In the first book we learn the story of Bailey and his infinite loyalty towards Ethan, through his multiple lives. In this excellent addition to the series we learn the story of Molly and her undying love for Clarity, Ethan's niece. A dog's love is something precious and that is the part that I loved. But this fucking book hits you from all angles and so many times that I also grew to hate it. It burned me so much that many times I just had to drop it and gather all possible strength to read it at a later time. It's that messed up, but not because of that, less valuable. A highly memorable read. A favorite place well earned. A book specially recommendable for the dog lover. Innumerable moments to remember. Indescribably beautiful, insufferably painful. After reading it you cannot but love even more your doggy companion. But I have to strongly warn beforehand that it has many, maaany extremely painful moments. Empathy is a beautiful and wicked gift. It can bring you as much happiness as can pain. And there's a very specific pain, when you feel that something happens to an animal. **** The movie is a nice adaptation of the book. Many serious deviations from the main plot, some good, some not. Luckily, the many changes on the plot made the whole thing much less painful than it originally was, so it's is a much friendler version than the book. Several similarities with "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins. The diachronic style, the constant coming and going between the views of the different characters, and, to a certain extent, even the theme. And, like the aforementioned book, as gripping as few others. It creates that delicious addiction of wanting to know what is going to happen next, and several surprises that guarantee more than one plot twist. Highly recommendable. Amy is certainly a character that one can hardly ever forget in a lifetime. She is in many ways, for very different reasons, plainly and simply: "Amazing". Disturbingly Amazing. **** The movie is an excellent adaptation of the book, capturing much of its spirit. Most of the praising goes to the brilliant performance of Rosamund Pike, that got almost to the letter the "Amazing Amy" personality. Still, even so, the book felt superior. Certain differences, although minuscule, were noticed. But in the world of book-to-film adaptations, Gone Girl holds a very prestigious place. Varias semejanzas con "La chica del tren" de Paula Hawkins. El estilo diacrónico, el constante ir y venir entre las vidas de los distintos personajes, y en cierta medida hasta la temática. Y al igual que el mencionado libro, es atrapante como pocos. Genera esa deliciosa adicción de querer saber que es lo va a suceder después y varias sorpresas que aseguran darte vuelta la trama más de una vez. Muy recomendable. Amy es ciertamente un personaje que probablemente uno jamás en la vida puede llegar a olvidar. Es de varias formas, por muy diversas razones, lisa y llanamente: "Asombrosa". Perturbadoramente Asombrosa. **** La película es una excelente adaptación del libro, capturando mucho de su espíritu. Los laureles principalmente se los lleva la brillante actuación de Rosamund Pike, que capturó casi a la letra la personalidad de "Asombrosa Amy". Por supuesto, aún así el libro se sintió superior. In this moderately short but powerful novel we learn the story of Madeline "Maddy" Whittier, a fragile seventeen year old young lady with SCID, also known as the "bubble boy" disease. Isolated from the outside world, from everything, and everyone, Madeline lives secluded in a completely sterilized house; with a protective mother and a dedicated nurse that constantly checks her medical condition, since even the slightest alteration, even the most innocuous microbe, has the potential to kill her. Recluse in a house that she is never allowed to leave, life goes on relatively uneventful, until one day a dysfunctional family moves into the next house. And among them, a young boy named Olly. This external interference, will slowly change her life, unleashing a new world unknown before within her, and a passion to live, that carries, given her fragile condition, a sure risk of death. There are books that make you feel, think, and even tear, and this is one that includes a little bit of everything, with even some laughs as well. It left me with countless quotes and moments to remember. A memorable YA, adorable as few others. **** The movie manages to capture some of the book's spirit, but not really that much. Neither good or bad, just regular. Some important omissions and deviations were noticed. And the atmosphere felt a lot more early teen than young adult. Rue was also there. Interesting to complement the reading. Un YA memorable. Adorable como pocos. *** La película llega a capturar algo del espíritu del libro, pero hasta ahí. Ni buena ni mala, veíble. Se notaron varias omisiones críticas, y algunas desviaciones importantes. Y el clima parecía mucho más early teen que young adult. Rue también está ahí. Interesante para complementar la lectura. Until one day her dreamy beautiful couple, for reasons we are not going to spoil, ceases to be. Something happens and nothing will ever be the same. Something happens and her already problematic life will change forever; her future, and the past she once thought she knew. Starts somewhat slow but in short time becomes very gripping, and as the story progresses, it becomes even grippier still, maintaining that spectacular atmosphere from beginning to end. A certified good thriller. Hardly difficult to disappoint. **** The movie is a faithful adaptation of the book. Emily Blunt delivers a remarkable performance, really worthy of recognition. However, due to several shortcomings, the movie is quite far to being as gripping or captivating as the book. A bad guy you can see coming from the very beginning, and several important omissions. In this perfect world, Bernard Max tries to find a place in a society he does not feel he belongs, Lenina Crowne tries to overcome feelings she should not have, and John Savage struggles with his desire... to understand. Interesting from time to time, but sometimes, not so much. Mixed feelings. Overall an enjoyable read. An all-time classic, and a pillar of dystopian fiction. After carefully examining it she discovers that she can step through it into a new world. This is the story of her fantastic adventures, and her second journey into Wonderland. Well, this was even crazier than the first one! A book that can be read as a standalone, since most of the characters and events from the first book are barely referenced or mentioned. In this crazy sequel we get to meet more eccentric characters; like the Red and White Queen, the twins Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the fragile Humpty Dumpty and the Red and White Knights, among others. Wonderland still an insane place and possibly the all-time biggest expression of the nonsense literature. Sadly this time couldn’t enjoy it as much as the first, I definitely need more sense in my readings. The poems, rhymes and puzzles certainly didn’t help either, wanted to drop it from the first chapter on. But, as always, my stubbornness won and just stuck with it till the end. Yippee. Following it she stumbles upon a rabbit hole, and when she enters it plummets in freefall until landing in a whole new world. This is the story of her adventures in Wonderland, a place where nothing makes sense, and everything crazy will take place. A very, VERY strange book; full of crazy surprises, most of them pleasant ones. Insane adventures, rational beheadings and lovely tea parties. Ironically, not my cup of tea. Literary nonsense is not really my thing. This was my first encounter with the genre and sadly not an experience I hold dear, I realize now I need sense in my readings. Still, even though I did not enjoy it that much this is one timeless classic I’m glad to be able to finally scratch off my list. Alice is one unique character, as much as everyone we get to meet during her journey; the unpunctual White Rabbit, the groovy Caterpillar, the beautiful Duchess, the grinning Cheshire Cat, the rational Mad Hatter, the undisturbed March Mare, and the adorable Queen of Hearts, among others. Hearing the audiobook through the flawless voice of Scarlett Johansson was a big plus, though maybe also accompanying it with a picture book could’ve worked wonders. A missed chance. An all-time classic that amassed immense popularity, a huge fan base and an infinity of adaptations, and for just reasons. A classic apt for all audiences, children and adult alike, if you can withstand the non-stop irrationality that is. I couldn’t, but don’t be afraid to give it a try. It's public domain, you can find it HERE. *** Alice in Wonderland (2010) is a colorful and entertaining adaptation, as anything Disney, yet hardly at all faithful to the book. Most of the characters from #1 and #2 were there (the March Mare being my favorite), and some basic storyline of the book; sadly everything else is made up. It’s still decent enough to watch I guess, Depp and Bonham Carter brilliant as ever. Overall memorable, to some extent; just don’t expect much fidelity. Still missing, Alice in Wonderland (1951). La Literarura Sinsentido no es en absoluto lo mío. Este fue mi primer encuentro con el género y lamentablemente no una experiencia que atesore, me doy cuenta ahora que necesito sentido en mis lecturas. Aun así, aunque no lo disfruté mucho este es un clásico atemporal que me alegra finalmente poder tachar de mi lista. Alicia es un personaje único, tanto como cualquiera de los que conocemos durante su viaje; el impuntual Conejo Blanco, la copada Oruga, la hermosa Duquesa, el Sonriente Gato de Cheshire, el racional Sombrerero, la imperturbable Liebre de Marzo, y la adorable Reina de Corazones, entre otros. Escuchar el audiolibro a través de la impecable voz de Scarlett Johansson fue un gran deleite, aunque tal vez acompañarlo con un libro de dibujos podría haber hecho maravillas. Una oportunidad perdida. Un clásico de todos los tiempos que amasó inmensa popularidad, una gran base de culto y una infinidad de adaptaciones, y por justas razones. Now imagine something really bad and scary, then ten times worse. This is Auggie. Auggie is home schooled and stays reclusive with his family, but when the day finally arrives to attend Beecher Prep, Auggie will have to learn to come out of his shell and deal with other kids, and it’s certainly not going to be easy. His life, and everyone around him, is going to be affected. A masterful novel about discrimination, bullying and acceptance. Equally funny and heart-wrenching at times, with first person perspective through Auggie’s eyes, but also alternating with his sister Via and many of his friends. Through Wonder we can appreciate how everyone is affected by Auggie’s presence, and how they deal with it. You simply can't not LOVE Wonder. It is filled with so much love, and pain. Auggie is adorable, and his family is lovable. Jack Will, Summer, Miranda also amazing. And special mention for Daisy, Charlotte and even hateful Julian. An unforgettable YA/Children’s novel, with so many teachings, quotes and moments to remember by. Moving, uplifting. A must read for kids and adults alike. EXTREMELY recommendable. A special place earned in my heart, and solid Favorite. The movie (2017) is a great adaptation. Very faithful to the book, extremely moving, with an absolutely fantastic ending. Jacob Tremblay playing a wonderful Auggie. And I especially LOVED Owen Wilson as Nate, Auggie’s father, adorable beyond words could ever describe. Julia Roberts was also there. The book was far superior of course but, all things considered, an excellent choice to complement the reading. Una inolvidable novela para Joven Adulto / Niños, con muchísimas enseñanzas, citas y momentos para el recuerdo. Conmovedora, elevadora. Una lectura debida para niños y adultos por igual. EXTREMADAMENTE recomendable. Un lugar especial ganado en mi corazón, y sólido Favorito. La película (2017) es una genial adaptación. Muy fiel al libro, extremadamente conmovedora, con un absolutamente fantástico final. Jacob Tremblay haciendo un maravilloso Auggie. Say what again? Harvey Cheyne Jr is a pampered child travelling with his wealthy parents in a transatlantic steamship through the Grand Banks. Accid Say what again? Harvey Cheyne Jr is a pampered child travelling with his wealthy parents in a transatlantic steamship through the Grand Banks. Accidentally falling from the ship, he is miraculously later rescued by a common casual sailor. By those hard chances of fate, he forcedly awakens to a new life as mariner and fisherman, trying to earn his keep, awaiting the day he can finally reunite with his family again. Few times I disliked a book so much, reading this incomprehensible thing was an extremely painful experience like few other I wish I could forget. The sea language used by Kipling in this work has unspeakable grammatical deviations, countless abbreviations, and a marine vocabulary sometimes indecipherable, maybe very pertaining to the era it was written (1800’s), but today excessively difficult to read and an unbearable torment to endure. The story overall is good and moderately interesting, if you can get past the linguistic maze that surrounds it, or you are familiar with Kipling’s style of writing. None of which was my case. Harvey Cheyne Jr es un niño malcriado viajando con sus acaudalados padres en un transatlántico a vapor a través de los Grandes Bancos. Al caer accidentalmente del barco, es luego milagrosamente salvado por un común y casual navegante. Por esas duras chances del destino, despierta forzadamente en una nueva vida como marino y pescador, tratando de ganarse el pan del día, esperando algún día poder reunirse finalmente de nuevo con su familia. Pocas veces me desagradó tanto un libro, leer esta cosa incomprensible fue una experiencia extremadamente dolorosa como pocas veces que desearía poder olvidar. El lenguaje de mar utilizado por Kipling en esta obra tiene indecibles desviaciones gramaticales, innumerables abreviaciones, y un vocabulario marítimo a veces indescifrable, tal vez muy acorde a la época donde transcurre (1800), pero hoy excesivamente difícil de leer y un insufrible tormento de soportar. La historia a grandes rasgos es buena y medianamente interesante, si se puede obviar todo el laberinto linguístico que la rodea, o si estás familiarizado con el estilo de escritura de Kipling. Martin is uncertain, but his heart inclines to a wild vivacious sorrel. Every year, the owner’s lovely grandchildren, Daniel, Felipe and Teresita, arrive from the city to visit during the summer. Their school year has been very good, so old grampa promises each a special gift. Martin and Daniel had been inseparable friends since forever, but when Daniel unknowingly chooses the same sorrel Martin secretly wanted, their friendship is put to the test. This was surprisingly nice. Loved the friendship between Martin and Daniel and that, despite their differences, they always had each other’s back. Felipe and Teresita were also lovely. I remember reading this at school and hating it, but now rereading it found it highly enjoyable. Exceedingly easy to read, and very heart warming. I was expecting a tragedy to occur at any minute, like so often happens with horses, but happily that never happened. This was very sweet and innocent. The movie (1989) is a good film, but a terrible adaptation. It is so loosely based on the book that it seems like a totally different thing altogether. A lot of subplots were added, and none of them seem intrinsically related. Because of this much of the lovely essence of the book is lost. It may stand good on its own, considered as a standalone with no relation to the book, but as an adaptation I don’t think it’s worth it. ----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE : [1991] [95p] [YA] [3.5] [Recommendable] ----------------------------------------------- ¡Los caballitos son lindos! Martin es un joven niño trabajando en un rancho de campo. Su cumpleaños se acerca, se está convirtiendo en un joven hombrecito, así que el viejo dueño le promete cualquier caballo que él quiera. Martin está indeciso, pero su corazón se inclina por un salvaje y vivaz alazán. Cada año, los amorosos nietos del dueño, Daniel, Felipe y Teresita, llegan desde la ciudad para visitar durante el verano. Su año escolar fue muy bueno, así que el viejo abuelo les promete a cada uno un regalo especial. Martin y Daniel han sido amigos inseparables desde siempre, pero cuando Daniel inadvertidamente elije el mismo alazán que Martin secretamente deseaba, su amistad es puesta a prueba. Esto fue sorprendentemente lindo. Amé la amistad entre Martin y Daniel que, pese a sus diferencias, siempre se cuidaban mutuamente la espalda. Felipe y Teresita también resultaron adorables. Recuerdo leer esto en el colegio y odiarlo, pero ahora releyéndolo me pareció altamente disfrutable. Excesivamente fácil de leer, y muy cálido para el corazón. Esperaba una tragedia a ocurrir a cada minuto, como tan usualmente suele suceder con caballos, pero felizmente nunca sucedió. Esto fue muy dulce e inocente. La película (1989) es un buen film, pero una terrible adaptación. Está tan escasamente basado en el libro que parece como una cosa completamente distinta. Se añadieron un montón de sub tramas, y ninguna parece intrínsecamente relacionado. Es por eso que mucha de la hermosa esencia del libro se pierde.
