Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie continues to push boundaries with her speculative futuristic short story about a future where the societal roles of men and women are switched. Her social commentary is sharp and on point, highlighting the absurdities of how women are treated by politics, social expectations and gender roles.
Reading this story the way it was written feels off, infuriating, unrealistic. Now read it again with male and female characters reversed: and suddenly it all still sounds off and infuriating, but realistic.
Too bad that those who should read this story never will. It won't change the minds of those whose minds could do well with a little food for thought. But it's a well-written and interesting thought experiment....more
