5 stars to V.C. Andrews's Flowers in the Attic. This was one of the earliest books I remember reading as a young adult. I was captivated by the relationships which is probably from where my love of reading and writing family dramas was born.

As an avid genealogist, this books is ripe with analysis to understand all the connections between blood and non-blood relatives. It played to everything I found fascinating and the psychology of why people do the things they do.

The subject, incest at its core, can be a difficult one to digest; however, Andrews handles it with care. I daresay many readers are rooting for some of the couples to get or stay together -- and that's not easy to acknowledge. But ultimately, I think the reader has to forget the family relationships between some of these characters and just focus on the intensity of the drama between 2 people regardless of their relationships.

Locked in an attic. Rejected by your mother. Poisoned by someone. Religious grandmothers with a vengeance. Who is right and who is wrong? The religious themes in this book are so prevalent that you can't help but question your own beliefs.

I didn't realize there were multiple volumes in this story until many years later and went back to re-read the original one. But when I did, I was ensconced in my reading realm. This family is just so maniacal... you have to read it just to see what some people are capable of.

Gary Sundell Haven'the read this one.

James It's definitely not a cozy. There are at least 5 in the series, but even if you just read this first one, it's quite suspensful.

Gary Sundell I knew it wasn't a cozy. If I can get it cheap sometime on my Nook. The reading budget is a bit tight these days.

Dawn Michelle This book scared the BEJEEZUS out of me when I read it [I was 13 or 14]. I read it when I was at my father's house as my mother would have grounded me six ways to Sunday for reading such a book. All of my Michigan friends and I were reading this series and passing them back and forth. I still cannot look at the cover and NOT get the heebie-jeebies.

Aw! But it is so awesome and the suspense is just thrilling. I really loved the first one, but they went a bit down hill afterwards.

Always Pouting I've wanted to read this book forever

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin I'm so glad you loved this! I'm hoping to re-read this series some day! I loved them when I was younger :-)

Mel (Epic Reading) I read this as a young teenager as well and it opened my eyes to how nice my life was in comparison.
I haven't re-read it in years. Perhaps I should soon.
Absolutely great review!!

If you've never seen any of the TV series, shows or read it, definitely read this first one... the rest aren't as good. Book 2 is strong, but they aren't as "shocking" as what you learn in the first one. They are still worth a read because you invest in the family and want to know how it all turns out.

The whole concept got me... I had to read them. I watched the movie re-make a few years ago and I didn't agree with some of the casting, but it was still such a good memory of being exposed to this series.

Bookread2day With so many books in my book case I just wish that I found time to read this one. I have wanted to read Flowers in the Attic for a long time.

James It's definitely full of plot and character details... and you will have a big reaction to its theme. But I understand the TBR woe.

Teresa Read it many years ago James and I remember it stayed with me for ages afterwards. It was so terribly sad.

message 19: by Dani (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dani N This book is haunting! I have a weakness for Andrews and her twisted family plots and secrets.

James I agree totally. Makes me feel right at home with this type of book. Not that it was my life. But I love this genre. :)

James A bit sad, Teresa. But there was some hope at the end!
