Err...Ugh and stuff?

Was this really written by the same guy who created Saga? Not that I'm a deliriously hysterical Saga fan or anything (yes, that's another series I read wrong), but I kinda sorta expected more from this because of Brian Vaughan's involvement. What more was I expecting, you ask? Well more maturity, for one. Okay, so the fact that this is called Paper GIRLS as opposed to um, you know, Paper WOMEN, should kinda sorta have clued me in as to the age of the characters. But it didn't, so it didn't. A slightly clueless shrimp is me and stuff. Note to self: blurbs from now on you shall read, before graphic novels you shall buy.

Anything else? Err...No? Apart from despicably young, meh characters, that is. And a super meh story. And a super super meh 80s setting. And super super super meh dialogues. And super super super super meh everything. But hey, it's not ALL bad and meh and stuff! Oh no, it's not! And thank fish for that! It's also super super super super super flat and unemotional and oh-wow-I-really-couldn't-care-less and stuff! Yay and stuff!

➽ And the moral of this My Moral Making Factory is Presently on Strike and So Am I Life Sucks and Stuff Crappy Non Review (MMMFiPoSaSAILSaSCNR™) is: Bye now. Also: you are quite welcome, my Flimsy Decapods. And stuff.

This response to a book is the biggest red siren.

"There goes the alarm ringing in my head"

Thanks for the heads up Sarah. *Chucking this book straight off my reading list*"

I'd tell you to give it a try anyway but most of my friends felt the same as I did, so it might be a good idea to stay away from this one:/

Oh, and you're welcome! My pleasure and stuff:D

I have an acute allergy to youngish characters, which might explain why I didn't enjoy this one much. I'll check The Last Man ASAP, thanks for the rec, Devon!:)

Celise Yep. This sums up my feelings as well.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) The average rating for this volume is pretty good but nearly all my friends rated it either 2 or 3 stars:/

Eilonwy I've read this entire series so far, but it just keeps getting weirder and weirder and I have no idea where it's going.

I have an unreasonable fondness for it because I used to deliver the Cleveland Press[erver] back in my own childhood, though. It was an afternoon paper then!

You read it all? Wow. I don't see your review for this one, how did you like it? Well enough to continue with the series, obviously but apart from that? How many volumes are there so far?

message 8: by Eilonwy (new)

Eilonwy I have no idea how many volumes there are! (I think the fourth one came out?)

I like the series because it's wildly creative and unpredictable, but at the same time, it's so hard to find an overarching plot that if it disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't waste any brain energy wondering what happened. (Not like the Mind the Gap series, which had 3 volumes and then just fizzled, leaving me forever wondering what was going to happen ... sob ...)

You're not making a good job of convincing me to give vol. 2 a try, haha. I've never heard of the Mind Gap series, but I'll try and remember never to read it, since it died without a proper finish. What happened? Why did it stop?

message 10: by Eilonwy (new)

Eilonwy I think the guy who wrote Mind the Gap ran out of money and the series wasn't selling enough issues to make up for it. Comic publishing seems to be a brutal business if you aren't working for either Marvel or DC.

I loved that series -- it was gorgeous and had a science fiction/thriller plot with very interesting characters. But it doesn't look like it's ever coming back from the dead, which weirdly enough was the premise of the story, so maybe it cursed itself somehow.

It definitely feels like Marvel and DC have some kind of monopoly in the US, and that other Comic publishers don't stand much of a chance. It seems especially difficult for Comics that aren't super-hero related (although Image seems to be doing a good job at diversifying a little). It's a bit different in Europe because, even though we also have Comic publishing powerhouses, we don't have that super hero "tradition," so people are more open to different genres and there is much more variety in the type of comics published.
