Bought the book a year ago and it took me some time to start reading it. I was encouraged to purchase it by some reviews I'd read and though it waited some time to be chosen as my next read, I reckon I am fully rewarded. The story of an American Baptist missionary family that find themselves in Congo just before it gains its independence is superb. Five narrators of different ages telling different stories add to the incredible atmosphere of colonial Congo and I'm enjoying both the stories and the language, witty at times. The book is definitely food for thought regarding bringing christianity to non-Christians in those days, moreover, the culture clash problems described gives you a good insight into how to understand people whose mentality and reactions to the world around are different from yours. This novel will definitely stay in my memory for a long, long time ...

Laura I remember they put on layers and layers of clothes for the flight because they couldn't afford to pay for extra luggage. And one daughter goes off with the crooked bi-plane pilot just to get the hell out. And the mother finally leaves the husband because he jeopardized their lives. And the younger daughter falls for a local Congolese boy.

Beata I remember the narration mainly, the poisonwood tree and the terryfing march of army ants ... Must reread it in the near future ..

Beata Thank you, JV :)

Paula K Loved this book. Great review, Beata!

James Field Good review. Another book for my 'Want to read' list.

Beata Thank you, James :) never read Kingsolver before and read various reviews on her other novels but for me this one is exceptional ...... I can still feel it in my bones .....

Barbara Great review, Beata. I read this years ago and loved it, also. Barbara Kingsolver is a great writer. Another favorite of mine by her is The La Cuna. Have you read it?

Beata Thanks Barbara for your kind words :)) no, haven't read it yet but put down the title :) Thanks!

Barbara You're very welcome.

J.C. I read this book years ago. A friend whose aunts were missionaries in Africa long ago lent me it! The memory of it has stayed with me, as you say it will with you. Thank you for reminding me of it. It's a very powerful and evocative story.

Paige Great succinct review, Beata. I loved this book! I grew up in as the daughter of a Baptist pastor, so some of the emotions within the family regarding their feelings toward their father really hit home.
