Flowers in the Attic (Dollanganger, #1)

I watched this film as a teenager never realising until recently it was a book. I was sucked into this on the opening scenes, the attic where the paper flowers blow sucked me in and wouldn't let me out in the same way as the characters couldn't leave.
This was a really dark read for its time and using a taboo trope that raises eyebrows now i can only imagine the hype of the 70's.
I will continue this series, its very readable, the words flow and i flew through the book. While at the time this was probably considered adult, i think this reads and feels very YA in today's society.

I feel like YA today deals with a lot of hard hitting topics and deals with them on page and very graphically so a book that deals with incest mainly off page seems very tame in todays world. Forbidden by Tabitha Sazuma is a book that springs to mind in dealing with on page incest that is classified as YA, Flowers in the Attic i think it was controversial for its time but feels very dated now in the way its written. But yes i agree, these books are so easy to devour! Im enjoy the series so much!

Books like TV shows are subjective. Since the YA genre overhaul i have read more hard hitting tropes than what is in Flowers in the Attic but its all down to your own exposure.
YA is 12-18 years and while id agree that 12 is too young for this book i dont think 18 is too young at all. I watched the film at around 15 years of age.
I feel like the hype behind Flowers in the Attic is the same hype behind Lady Chatterley's Lover - controversial at the time, not so hard hitting today. Our society is more open, we talk about things which in turn makes them less shocking.
Ive never watched South Park so i really can't comment on that show. Is it not suitable for an age range of 12-18?

I would describe the first two novels as guilty pleasures. :)

Im halfway through book two and wow, i totally agree with your comment!

Yes guilty pleasures is very accurate! I didnt know the movie had been remade, i shall check that out!

I saw a thread on a book group recently and there was hundreds of comments on this book and like you i was totally shocked how many people are still really into them but reading them i can see why as they are just so readable <3
