it was ok
bookshelves: edelweiss

I liked the mystery and the premise of this novel but the believability factor weighed this one down. I probably could have ignored my critical brain if I had liked the execution of the story or the characters. But I didn't.

I read to 50% and then skimmed/speed read to the end. I did like how the author didn't go for the obvious and the slight twist at the end left things open for a sequel. Unfortunately, the believability factor had my eyes rolling.

The chapters alternated between current day and flashbacks to the past, with the mean girls/teen camp figuring prominently in the story, a particular dislike of mine. There was also a YA quality to the writing that I didn't care for.

Recommended for people who like teen themes and for those who can silence their inner critic and just go with where the story takes them.

*I received a copy of this book from Edelweiss and Penguin Publishing group in an exchange for an honest review.

Jenna Bookish I found this one rather lackluster as well. Based on all the reviews I've seen for it, I thought I was alone. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Thanks Tammy, I will be interested in your thoughts. I seem to be the outlier. I passed on it for BOTM club because I didn't care for his first book but the auto download on EW, along with rave reviews, tempted me to try it. I truly hope you enjoy it!

Holly, thanks for mentioning this, I'm glad it wasn't just me! Maybe the ability to enjoy YA is the key to enjoying this book, or not.

Elyse, I think the YA/teen theme is the key to enjoying this book. And I was just thinking I was behind in posting over there. Our daughter is getting married this Saturday so it's been a crazy year. I will do a massive update after this weekend!

Canadian Jen I couldn't agree with you more, Jan! Good call.

Melissa Oh boy . . . sorry this one didn’t work for you, Jan. I had similar feeling about this author’s first book and some of the other reviews I’d seen for this almost convinced me to give him a second chance. Nope. Not now. 😂 I fear my eyes would be rolling, too.

Melissa, good call. I almost didn't read this because of my feelings toward Final Girls but there have been so many great reviews. And then when I saw the download button on EW my twitchy fingers couldn't resist. I should have gone with my first instinct! 🙄

Kelli I took this one out over the summer but returned w/o reading. Looks like I made a good choice. I’m picky with thrillers.

Kelli, the thriller genre is bloated with so many being published that it's hard to find the gems. This one gets many positive reviews but it isn't my cup of tea. The older I get the pickier I get....so many books, so little time.

Norma ~ The Sisters Sorry this one didn't work for you, Jan!

Thanks Marialyce. I get it, I think the ones who enjoyed it (and his first one) saw it as a campy Grade B horror movie. Maybe if that had been my mindset I would have enjoyed it more!
