it was amazing
bookshelves: 5-star, anti-feminist, classic, historical-fiction, popular, pretty-good, superb-characterization

Review to come. So far this has been an engrossing read. I remember watching the movie an having mixed feelings about it, but the book has less of those moments when you are kind of exhorting the plot to stop plodding. It really puts into perspective how we are the products of our culture. This is definitely five-star material.

Finished the book finally. What a chunkster! What a story! The words kept coming, and I kept being riveted all the way. A slight complaint is that the main character Scarlet has too much grief to bear, and there's no respite for her. The last chapter took me 10 hours to complete. It was so unrelenting in tension. But people labelling it as a romance is sometimes a disservice. It's so much more. This large but singular book (Margaret Mitchell did not write a Go Set A Watchman) is viscerally yours to enjoy. That's it from me.

Tracey Luffy, excellent review of a very special book. So glad you enjoyed it even though it's a huge tome. :))

Thank you. I never felt that I would quit reading. There was no danger of that happening. :)

Zoeytron Very pleased you enjoyed this classic, Luffy. Nice review.

I'm late to the party aren't I? Should've read this ages ago.

There are very few people on this planet who will bodily reject GwtW.

Brina Agreed although by depicting the world in the 1860s, there are many different views shown and a lot of multi faceted discussions generated.

Thank you, Hippie Chick! The conditions of war for the Confederates soldiers has been replicated by ww1 and WW2 fiction and nonfiction books. E.g Testament of Youth. Anyway, have a nice day.

Luffy Sempai Hippie Chick wrote: "I'm not talking about the soldiers but the Southern way of life built on the backs of the slaves and the destruction committed by the Union Armies on the civilian population and their properties."

Yes, it looks like even slaves that do indoor work shun the slaves picking cotton under the sun. There was a fixed and complex hierarchy in the South in the 19th century. As for the Union armies, they were kind of villainous, but not deeply depraved or evil.

Thanks, but I don't know if my review is worthy of your praise:) I rarely read paperweights as you so aptly call it. Thanks for the like and comment.

Paula K A splendid review for a masterpiece, Luffy!

Jim I've been thinking lately that I should reread this, but I have such good memories & less patience than I used to for really long books. I think I'll keep the memories. Thanks for bringing them up again.

Long books will be my bread and butter next year. Think well before each read :)

Mikayla I read this book when I was maybe 13. It took me two weeks to plod through it but like many before me I was riveted. History is wonderful to read through fiction. This book was fascinating and wonderful!

It still is. But I can't read it a second time. It is an exhausting experience.

Gamar ❤ I was engrossed throughout a 1000 page book , that says alot
I love the characters and their development here as well as the gutsy move to make scarlett , a selfish conceited woman ( or rather girl) the main character .
Love this so so muchhh- and the ending ?!! i loved how original and unorthodox that was too
