it was amazing

I love this book, of course I do, but the fact remains that this book prominently featured two of my most hated Harry Potter characters. Ginny Weasley and Dobby. There, I said it. I hate them both. In my Harry Potter hate list, Ginny and Dobby probably rank somewhere below Umbridge and Peter Pettigrew. Yeah, you heard me. I hate them that much.

The reason I hate Ginny is---well, never mind. I don't want to start another shipping war here, the last one was terrible enough, so let the reason for my hatred be implicit and unsaid.

Dobby is freaking annoying, yo. All his eagerness and shit - and yeah, I know what happens in the end. Doesn't matter. I still hate Dobby. Dobby is the equivalent of fingernails on chalkboard for me. If he had been my elf, I'd have given him a sock already so he could his whimpering, sniveling ass out of my life. He means well, I know he does, it's just that he's such a frustratingly well-meaning bumbling idiot.
“You know what, Harry? If he doesn’t stop trying to save your life he’s going to kill you.”
Aaaaaaaand one final note.
“Ginny!” said Mr. Weasley, flabbergasted. “Haven’t I taught you anything. What have I always told you? Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can’t see where it keeps its brain?"
No particular reason I included that, except for the fact that it reminded me of my ex-boyfriend :3

Minni Mouse Hahahaha. Your last line made me laugh. And agreed - I never cared for Ginny. I always thought it was strange when Rowling put her and Harry together.

message 2: by Stacie (new) - added it

Stacie C But Dobby... That hurt at the end. Like punch in the guy kind of pain. I didn't see that coming.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I'm a terrible person because I cheered.

Sarah (thegirltheycalljones) Oh, I'd really like to know why you don't like Ginny - I don't especially care about Ginny, just curious - because I'm pretty sure it would be so much fun to read !
Aren't we over HP ships already ? Can they still start a war ? Nevermind. Really liked your review anyway !

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies She's immature, flighty, the sort of annoying little sister figure that I tend to dislike. And I feel like she's so wrong for Harry.

Clair I have nothing against Ginny (she's not my fave but I don't dislike her either - perhaps I wish I liked her more because of how important she is to Harry? But I kinda like how she's not the most known and ends up with the main).

But Dobby. I agree about Dobby. I didn't cheer, but I was way more upset when Hedwig died.

Cathy Coincidentally I started a reread of HP this weekend, though I'm still on the first. I can understand about Ginny, actually, but Dobby!! While respecting your opinion, I am not ashamed to admit that I cry and obscene amount of tears whenever I read his death scene. I mean, Dobby! Although he can be really annoying, come to think of it. Especially in the beginning. Huh.

Still, hardly any character is worse than Umbridge in my book :p

I like Ginny, but I don't like her with Harry. Her character was desecrated in the movies, though. I cringe at the Hinny romance in the Half-Blood Prince movie. XD

Marie -The Reading Otter Ginny as a separate character I eventually started to really like. She was funny and a smart, and talented at doing magic and spells. But when she was kind of shoehorned into being the girl that Harry eventually marries, I started to not like her that much. I personally would have preferred if it was some unnamed girl that we hadn't met previously that he married. It just felt too convenient and strange to me that his best friend's little sister, a girl he all but ignored for 5 years was suddenly a girl he wanted to date and marry.

As for Dobby, he was just okay. I liked Kreacher more and was sadder when Hedwig died than when Dobby did. Though I was still a little sad. And then about a week later I had a little chuckle because ( I don't remember if it was mentioned in the second book) at the end of the movie anyways, Harry asked Dobby to promise to never save his life again and when Dobby did he died.

I have a dark sense of humor sometimes.

Ellie Taylor I don't think that I disliked Ginny in this particular book, but only because I couldn't draw my attention away from how much I hate Lockhart and Dobby... But definitely in the later books she's just so awful. I don't understand how a family that produced the twins could have her and Ron, and Percy. Like what the hell?

Vicky Marie Yes! Finally someone who shares my Dobby hatred. And LOL on the ex-boyfriend bit.

Yes, Kreacher was a much more complex character to me.

mali I'm reading the second book when the illustrated edition comes out in October, now I'm scared I wont like Ginny or Dobby...

message 14: by Leah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leah Alvord "Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain."

Wow, I need to do a reread, because that is a foreshadowing bomb right there.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Ginny had very little back-bone until Harry grew up and decided he needs a partner that has one.

Tiffany I've never cared for Ginny either....I don't get why Harry Potter would choose Ginny out of almost any girl hah. Why couldn't he of met someone AFTER Hogwarts that he had more in common with? Dobby I never minded though lol

Samantha I hate Ginny too.

message 18: by Stacie (new) - added it

Stacie C I had no idea there was an I hate Dobby sub culture!

Ellen Gail I have no strong feelings on Ginny. I don't hate her, but there are so many better characters! And her ending up with Harry never set 100% right with me.

And to hate them both more than Umbridge? I didn't know that was possible lol! Umbridge brings out a bitchy (well, bitchier) side of me.

Cindy Claudia I don't hate Ginny even a bit but I feel the same about Dobby. I thought I was the only one who hates him, because everyone seemed to grieve over his death and I'm just like "Well.. Am I evil if I say that I'm kind of happy about it?" lol

Octavia Cade Yay, another person who hates that horrid elf! He's the Jar Jar Binks of Harry Potter, I've always thought, and I was delighted when he died... because that meant there wouldn't be a single page wasted on him ever again.

message 22: by Kelly (new)

Kelly This review made me chuckle! I get where you're coming from with Ginny, she gets better in later books but this one, how did she not think "this is a bad idea" when the diary started writing back?!?

message 23: by Stephanie (new) - added it

Stephanie I hate Dobby too, except for in the 7th book, so you're not alone.

message 24: by W.R. (new)

W.R. Gingell Oh thank goodness! I thought I was the only one who hated Dobby! I may also have um, *coff* shouted "Finally!" when he died...

I always thought I was alone in disliking Ginny. Even as a 12 year old reading this I felt like Harry being into her came out NO-FREAKING-WHERE. I didn't like that he randomly got jealous when she was dating someone else. I was like BOO! Go crush on Cho, Harry. lol

I liked him with Cho. I could even tolerated Luna, but Ginny?

The only time I found her amusing was the last book when Cho was steadily trying to team up with Harry and Ginny was like "Oh Hell no" . I found that shit hilarious.

Danielle Honestly Ginny is a pain in the butt. Till this day, I never understood the reason why she ever ended up with Harry! Cho to me was a much MUCH better choice.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I'm pro-Cho too.

Octavia: Jar Jar Binks of Harry Potter is PERFECT

message 28: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Chase The last of line of your review made me spit out my drink XD

Charlotte Grayson THANK YOU! i knew it wasn't just me

message 30: by ~Dani~ (new) - added it

~Dani~ I actually never really felt like any of the female characters really fit well with him. I liked several of them on their own but never felt anyone had much romantic chemistry with Harry.

Kylie Crawford I loved that Rowling said Hermione should have ended up with Harry... Please don't stone me readers.

Her and Ron were super cute, and well written, but Rowling did admit that it didn't make sense with Hermione's character that she ended up with Ron.
I just always thought that her and Harry would have played off each other really well as a couple. I was so attached to Harry, I wanted him to end up with someone that matched him and challenged him.

Oh well. I still love Hermione and Ron, I wish Ginny were a more dynamic.

Alienor ✘ French Frowner ✘ GAH, Ginny. I'm still not over the fact that I would never have chosen her with H.

Jannah YES about Dobby, I cant stand that flappy eared little shit. Ginny I don't mind so much.

message 34: by Lauren (new)

Lauren How could you hate Dobby?!?!?

Erica Thomas So glad to hear other people dislike Ginny as much as I do!

message 36: by Maddie (new)

Maddie | THE PINK ROSE PANDA YAY! I'm not alone! I have never liked Ginny or Dobby... ever. I don't understand completely why yet, but man, this is a comforting fact to know that I'm not alone. :D

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm rereading the series now and I'm pretty much 'meh' about both of them - don't particularly like or dislike. I don't remember how I felt when I first read the books, but I think I probably liked Dobby but did find him annoying (like I wanted him to have a good ending but kind of behind the scenes type of thing, if that makes sense). I think I was kind of "eye roll" re: Ginny because of what she became. If she was developed more as a character outside of being Harry's love interest I probably would've liked her more. Everything about her felt too convenient for me in later books.

BUT who knows, maybe my opinions will change on my reread. I'm definitely noticing myself loving Hermione even more than I did when I was younger, which was already a lot to begin with.

message 38: by CS (new) - rated it 3 stars

CS I HATE DOBBY TOO!! OMG, every time in the movies or books he comes up, I get all stabby!

Tamara Give me a high five Khanh! I hate Ginny too! :D

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't hate Ginny but I don't think her characterization and romance with Harry was handled well at all. And with Dobby I'm just meh. And on the topic of Umbridge, I feel like one of the only people who hates Voldemort worse. I honestly don't see how she's more unlikable than the Dudleys. And maybe Lucius.

LilyCat I kind of agree with you about Dobby- the little guy's annoying.

message 42: by Khadija (new) - added it

Khadija Lol, I never cared much about Dobby either except him being a progressing plot key for Harry. That's it. He's kind and all and his reason to save Harry is a little obsessive yet endearing at the same time but I can't really decide my personal feelings for him.

As for Ginny, I've read the books long time ago (but I never read 7th, it was all alone on my shelf once everyone let out that major spoiler in it) and can't remember her much but I remember I did like her progress with Harry but not as much as Luna with Harry.

I mean, clearly after rereading; J.K did intend to build their relationship further by making her involved since the beginning and her crush being so evident (shadowed girl admiring a popular boy in a way and in the end gets him probably was her approach) but her character is quite headstrong annoying, a bit too common for Harry.. I've hated her when I saw her in media which wiped all my liking to her when I've read the books previously lol. So I can see where you're going with this review haha

Elias I like Dobby, but I agree with you about Ginny. Harry/Hermione ftw.

Agathe Oh finally! Someone who doesn't like Ginny either! You are my new hero

message 47: by Sneh (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sneh Mazomdar Ginny's bad, you all tell? Well if you get nearer to me now I'll...... BLAST YOUR BRAINS! TEAR YOUR HEART!?!!?!!

acascia I love your reviews, with school I barely have anytime for reading but I love to check your reviews every once in awhile and read your thoughts. I appreciate the effort you put in. I love this book and agree that ginny was created as a girlfriend to harry and didn't have much substance to her. it was disappointing. also dobby was a tad bit too much! the last quote made me laugh!!! good review!!!

so does this mean you'll be reading the hunger games next? xxx

Emma Red I feel like Harry should have ended up with a diffrent character. Not that I dont like Ginny, but I think he shoild be with some one else.
